Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Yeah, I use a two bottle holder on the back with nothing on the frame or between the bars. I carry one bottle of water and one Gatorade and I make a tubular repair kit like James does. Tubular spare folded tight with a CO2, MicroInflate adapter, razor blade, and a plastic tire lever all wrapped together with duct tape and strapped to the back of my bottle holder. So everything is behind me on the HydroTail. I also tape a can of PittStop to the fron of the Hydrotail, between it and the seat post, it tucks in perfectly and weighs next to nothing, so I figure why not. For a small puncture, I would reach for that first. Edited by bryancd 2010-03-10 12:17 PM |

I have: Tufo S3 Lite ( the smallest/lightest tubular I could find, hey it's the backup plan ) CO2 Microflater Lever Vittoria Pittstop
In special needs: More CO2, An old spare tubular, extra pittstop.
Plan A: Use Pitstop. ( if before S/N, grab extra co2 and pittstop ) Plan B: Replace Tubular ( if before S/N, grab spare tub, co2, pittstop ) |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Monty - 2010-03-10 1:11 PM James - how do you pack this...tail...just duct tape it, back shirt pocket? Thanks! This is my current plan. This year I’ll start with three water bottles. One 16oz will be a weak Perpetuem mix that I should have down before the Keene decent. That will be in my cage on the aero bars. The other 2 24oz bottles will have my regular mix of Perpetuem and will be in my Profile Design RM1 bottle holder. = http://www.profile-design.com/profile-design/products/hydration/all-hydration/rm1.html My loose items; 1 Co2 inflator 1 Co2 cartridge 16gr 1 razor blade Will be in a Xlab Mini Bag = http://www.xlab-usa.com/mini_bag.html secured to the underside of my RM1 bottle holder. The tubular and Vittoria Pit Stop will be under my saddle secured independently from on another with black electrical. Razor blade is primarily to cut the tubular off the wheel but can cut the tape as well. I am going to test a double Perpetuem mix idea, which is like eight scoops in 24 oz of water. It’s thick for sure. If that work for me I will have a slight change in my configuration. I ran the two water bottle idea last year and because I use Perpetuem I had to stop on the second loop (before the Keene decent) to remix another bottle. Also for what ever reason if I have only one bottle of Perpetuem and drop it, I am out. I like the idea riding with less weight but who doesn’t. I will already be riding less weight with the race wheels and less bottles than training. |

Bryan and coredump, You guys really carry a lever? I haven’t run tubular’s since the 80’s. I never had a problem yanking the tire off back then. I guess the glue is a lot stronger now. If you glue it properly ( so that you don't end up with a higher Crr ), then it'll be very difficult to just yank it off. Without a blade and a lever, you can't remove it easily. I use 3 coats of glue. It's on there pretty solidly. |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Yep, and i used it to remove a flat tubular on my rear disc at IMAZ 2007. Gave me just enough pry to get the tire peeled away from the rim so I could yank it off. And they weigh nothing. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I can be occasionally useful for comic relief...maybe not during the marathon on July 25th, though. I'm practicing my wincing face during my long runs already. Don't want my face all contorted funny for the photographers out on the course! KWin - 2010-03-10 7:25 AM Hey Sara, I will definitely have a triple chainring since my trusty road bike is the only bike I have. See you out there on the course! |

Extreme Veteran![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() PennState - 2010-03-10 4:31 PM Same reason I bought the Blackwell tubulars...that and they looked really cool on my black and yellow felt at the time. And it also seems that the tubular vs. clincher issue could come up. Suffice to say there are pro's and con's to each. I do think changing a tubular is faster and easier, but which is a faster tire is a highly debateable (heated) discussion. I ride Zipp 404 clinchers because I got a fantastic deal on them. I like Michelin Pro3 tires... but as I said it's personal preference on what you want to ride. ![]() |

Suffice to say there are pro's and con's to each. I do think changing a tubular is faster and easier, but which is a faster tire is a highly debateable (heated) discussion. In a very general sense, a tubular will be a lighter wheel set option and they do still have a slight edge in rolling resistance. But part of that advantage is mitigated by having to carry an extra tubular spare, which has a weight penalty over carrying a just a tube. I agree that changing a tubular is VERY fast, I have done it in a race and it was easy and I really didn't practice it before hand on a properly glued tire. Just go with what you know and like. ![]() |

Master![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I was just wondering how hard core you LP guys and gals are as far as your training is concerned. Do you rearrange your family life to train? Have you stopped going out on that ounce special night? Have you gotten into the kids collage fund to buy a new bike or pay for the trip. Stuff like that. I’ll start. Yes I rearrange my family life to train. Its easer now that our kids (3) are grown and on their own. We, Stacy and I still go out. Really no special night, but just when the training let me. Haven’t done a second mortgage on the house, but if Stacy would let me I would be the KING of the tri gear with a pretty sweat new ride. ![]() |

But I gotta admit, riding this bike is UNBELIEVABLY SWEET. The Jet 60 C2's with 23mm wide rims, feels just like a tubular despite being a clincher ; the profile design CX3 full carbon cockpit makes the front of the bike practically weightless yet it is super stiff ; it's just a fast, smooth, stiff but responsive ride and every pedal stroke is pure joy. Here she is right before I rode today My name is Bobby, and I am without a doubt addicted to Triathlon. |

Shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!! I have a T1 and love it. I don't know about a 10mm wetsuit, sounds buoyant. I wonder if Fred will spring for a new suit? |

Extreme Veteran![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Yes, I rearrange my life to train, except for the money part! Very low-budget Ironman here, I'm a throwback to the days when everyone rode steel road bikes because that's all there was. Can't afford another bike, and I love the way my bike fits and rides. However, if I did have money, I'd be right up there spending it all at the gear stores. I homeschool our six-year-old and I think he believes "Ironman" is an item in his curriculum since we do it every day. He can recite the narrative from any Ironman episode by heart. He is my training buddy and relentless coach. No matter how long I ride the trainer, when I get off he says, "Mommy, ride more bike!" Same for the treadmill. We are on our way out the door right now to swim. My partner and I take turns doing laps and swimming with him. He is a killer trail runner: take him to any trail and he takes off running, he's awesome. My partner is planning to do an Oly this summer so we're on the same wavelength about training, which is great. We have always been exercise/food/health freaks and have always done kind of "extreme" things (hike the Appalachian Trail, build our own house, run all day long for the pleasure of it) so our friends are used to it. Ironman is just another one of those "crazy" things I love to do. I think my friends would be more surprised if I did NOT want to do it. |
