Thanks guys, good feedback.   I am also trying to schedule my surgery for next Friday, this is the soonest my doc can get me in, to be confirmed hopefully tomorrow.  I am heading down to B2B HIM this weekend and will see how that half mary feels.  So, I don't think much is lost in trying the B2B, I'm not racing it, doing it with a friend and working on nutrition/hydration and practice my walk/jog! I also doubt that it will convince me not to do the surgery.  Yes, I shall not sign up for another IM until I am close to fully recovered, now let's hope I can stick to that plan!

Good news was my hip xray came back looking healthy yesterday.

Good training everyone!

Warren-I hope you get good news at your appt. and get that hip sorted out.

Good luck this weekend Matt.  That sounds like a prudent plan.

I hope my hip works out too.  I'm just going to work out normally until I see the specialist assuming it's no worse than what I've been doing all year.  My running for now is all easy effort/long run pace, so that should be fine I would think.

That's a tough call Matt.  Having just done an IM fresh off of surgery, I could argue both ways.  I think it depends on two things.  1) will it cause permanent damage if you don't have surgery?  Starting from less than scratch for IM training was much harder than I anticipated.  2) can you handle training through the pain?   IM training comes with enough of it's own pain.  I couldn't imagine adding the extra pain of an injury.

All I can say, I good luch this weekend, and use it as a barometer.

I have a friend that is organizing a team for the New England Relay June 11-12 - 220 miles across 5 New England states (check out www.newenglandrelay.com for more info). We are currently short 3 runners...I thought I would throw it out to you all - any interest? I'll be there. It's two weeks before IM CdA...so there would be time to taper (I kid).

If you are interested - send me a PM and I'll provide more details.

Oh - and bring it on Matt! Good luck tomorrow!

Looks like Matt is done, unofficial 6:13:03.  How was that hip, looks like you toughed it out and did fine given the circumstances.

Great job Matt!

Swim training question-

Next year I am just going to race sprints.  I am really trying to focus on getting faster.  Do any of ya'll know of any swim training programs for the 500m?  Last year I was able to set a PR in the 500m following the IM training plan (but that kind of defeats the purpose of doing sprints).  In running there are different training plans for the 1 mile vs. 5k vs. marathon.  I was wondering if the same thing was available for swimming.  I know that I could be successful again following last years IM swim plan, but with a newborn, I was looking for something a little more time friendly.

Thanks - Ray

I have been looking for an alternate swim plan for a while now (months).  I give up and decide to ask the group, then moments later run across this.  http://ntcmastersswim.blogspot.com/  Unless someone points me to a super duper 500m swim training plan, I may try these out.  I like that there are 3 workouts a week with each devoted to something different: endurance, speed, and form.  I think that if I swim the 'C' level hard enough, this might be exactly what I am looking for.

Race Report - fantastic race, definitely lived up to the hype, hard to believe it was only 3rd year for this event.

http://beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=233861

I can't believe it, my hip feels fine, in fact no pain today and little pain after the race at all. No more than normal anyways, very strange.  I still think I'm going in to surgery for it Friday though, want to get this behind me, so I can move forward confidently towards my next goal, but first things first is to get healthy again.

Thanks all, your the best support group ever!!

Great job Matt - I'm so relieved to hear that your hip didn't give you much grief during the race. I am so impressed with how far you've come...

Good deal on the hip Matt.  Good luck if you go ahead with the surgery.  Get healthy and come back with a vengeance!

The hip specialist moved my appointment up to tomorrow, so I see him in the morning.  Hopefully nothing but rehab, but we'll see.

Here's a plug for training diaries.  I was trying to figure out when I did this hip thing for the consult, so I went back to my old training logs.  I used to keep them with pen and paper - how archaic!  Anyway, this was before tris, but the first entry I found regarding the hip was a Monday morning after a hockey game, when I wrote that my hip really hurt getting out of bed.  Then the next morning, I couldn't complete my workout because my hip flexor was on fire.  So I'm guessing whatever I did, happened playing hockey that night.

Warren - I hope your hip issue is not serious and you just need some rehab.  In all my research about sports hernias, hockey is the top sport that they happen in.

Hmmm, thanks for the tip.  Are you going ahead with the surgery tomorrow?

The hip guy I went to doesn't think there's anything really going on soft tissue wise and that I have a joint issue.  The ball of my hip joint isn't round (obvious from an x-ray) and that plays a part, as well as getting old and maybe some pre-arthritic stuff.

I admit I didn't get the warm and fuzzies as he is a hip joint replacement specialist and I think he really didn't want to talk too much about the soft tissue possibility.  When I mentioned checking for a sports hernia, he reacted like doctors react when you mention Lyme disease - as if he almost doesn't believe they exist.  The good news is he pretty much gave me the green light to do whatever I want within pain tolerance and if it gets much worse to do more drastic diagnosis.

I still think I want a second opinion from a real sports ortho who has seen a sports hernia and other sports related hip problems.  I guess I'm thinking the general medical profession doesn't really get the athletic side of injuries and everything falls into their typical aging arguments.  It could very well be that, as I AM getting older, but I really think this has some soft tissue component.

Warren, I think you should trust your intuition with regards to not getting the warm and fuzzies...It's really tough to know what to think (in regards to injury)...I think getting a second (or third) opinion - especially from someone with sports injury is key.

Matt - how are you feeling a few days out? Are you going ahead with the surgery?

Ray - the site you found with the swim plans looks great. I have done some poking around previously looking for swim plans...another site I liked was this one: http://www.swimplan.com/index.php(you have to register to get to the good stuff, but it's free)

Bob, Bill and Aaron? How are you all doing?

Hello, my peeps!
It's been a very wierd couple of weeks.  With the bank I work for being bought by a much larger institution, I've had a lot of xtra stress in my life.  Normally, I go to the gym or go for a run to relieve the stress... but lately I just can't seem to get out to do it.  I've been playing racquetball a few times a week.  Hopefully, life will be back to normal in the near future.

Matt and Warren, I hope everything works out with your injuries/ailments.  Matt, even with your sports hernia, you crushed your HIM.  That's some intestinal fortitude there!

I can't believe Thanksgiving is next week!!!  Time flies when you're stressing out! Wink

Take care, everyone!

Hello team,
Just stopping in to say hello.  I hope everyone's offseason ailments/injuries are healing nicely.  I am close to completing my 15-week Half IM - to - couch potato non-training program. Wink

Looking at some of the races that are available next year is starting to get the juices flowing. I'm nursing a cold right now, so I hope to start some light run bike swim workouts on Monday.  I'm looking at possibly kicking off the tri season in early May with an XTERRA race.

I hope you and your families are all doing well!

Happy belated Thanksgiving.

I have been caught up lately, I get online for just a few minutes each day. I did get a new bike, but otherwise nothing exciting.

Woot! New bike - that's great. I'm trying to figure out how to finagle that here.

I had a really great thing happen yesterday that I want to share. My kids have both started swimming with the local swim team - because they have seen me swimming a lot and a few of their friends were on the swim team. This is their first year and they have participated in a couple of local meets...at the last meet, my oldest daughter's coach had her swim the 100y IM (keep in mind, this is her first year swimming - definitely her first time trying the butterfly happened this season). She really didn't want to do it and kept pestering her coach at the meet to pull her out. Her coach told her to "just try it", so she did. She DQ'ed - which is very common for first year, first IM scenarios...a lot of rules about the strokes (two handed touch for both butterfly and breast stroke, you can't look up during back stroke, etc) you have to keep in mind. She came home after that meet and said she wanted to do the IM until she got it right.

Fast forward two weeks to Saturday - we had another swim meet...Katherine (my oldest) was again schedule to swim in the 100y IM. She took off the blocks (her goggles slipped around during her dive and filled with water) and proceeded to successfully swim all four strokes legally and finish her race. Woot!

Then...when she dove in at the start of her next event (50y free), her goggles slipped down to her chin. Instead of stopping and putting them on in the right place, she swam as fast as she could and won her heat!

I was (and still am) so proud of her! Must be all that HTFU that is floating around the household.

Hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving...I realized today if I can run another 96 miles in the rest of the month - I can break 1000 miles for the year...let's hope my health will allow me to. Anyone got any good goals for the final month of the year?
