Speed laces, your normal bike shoes. Practice at home before the race. It really won't take that much time.

Don't make the mistake of using everything that you've got on the first run leg. Since it is only 2 miles you're going to need to be warmed up and ready to go right before the race.

I love duathlons..but then again I'm a BOP swimmer...

I remember back-in-the-day there being some special kind of pedal with a built-in platform that duathletes used.  And speaking of back-in-the-day, whenever I think of doing a duathlon I think of that Kenny Souza guy with the long hair and Speedo!

That is hysterical - I honestly thought the same thing! Here is me, circa 1993. Hair is not too long, but I did rock the Richard Simmons head band... If I thought it would still help me go 4:35 for a 1/2 IM, trust me - I would wear them both again in a second!

Tankboy rockin' the speedo, 1993

So the question for the group is, what current look or piece of equipment do you think will be totally ridiculous in twenty years?

Rob, definitely wear the bike shoes, toe covers will disappoint you greatly.

I ended up getting a wicked migraine with aura later in the afternoon. My body really was a mess today. No worries, tomorrow will be a better day.

Touche - I got mine around 11 AM.  Good thing it was so nice out and my friday off!

How do you do with working out and migraines?  I was ready to get on the trainer for a 3 min power test, and did it anyway.  During exercise, it can delay the onset in me.  Then slept for awhile and went out for a bike and run later on once the major pain died down.  I really think it helps me.  Almost no pain when working out, it comes back when i'm done, but less so.

Awesome Rusty!!  I'd say the closest we have now is compression socks, but nothing quite compares to rocking the speedo.

I'm in the same boat, bike+run >> swim.  Should at least be interesting.  A little shorter than I'd like, but not so bad for the first race of the year.

Hope everyone is starting to feel better. Fred, it looks like you made the right decision to take the day off. Sorry it was spent with a migraine. I've been getting headaches on the weekend but it is probably from dehydration. Joe, do you normally get migraines?

Kathy, awesome rides this week. Besides the rides how is the rest of the camp? Food?

Here is my new quote of the week:

who is bent over, drenched in sweat,
at the point of exhaustion when no one else is watching.

Last night I had the workout that I really needed. I started off with an hour spin and had an Epic hour (for me) . I ended up with 234 watts average for 60 minutes. This was 32 watts higher than I had ever done for that length. I know that this is low for a lot of you but for me it was exciting.

I finished out the other hour with a 30 min run and 1000 yd swim. I felt good throughout both hours and had plenty of energy and strength. My thoughts are that I know that if I peak at the right time that I will have a good race. I just have to nail my nutrition on race day and I'll be fine. I know that my knee will hold out for the 13.1 and might be a bit sore afterward but I will survive my 1st HIM.

I think I'm peaking at the right time.

Great job Todd. Congrats on your impressive gain in wattage! Isn't it nice to know that you're on the right track?

Well 1 workout down and 1 to go for today. Riding tomorrow on the Lonestar HIM course with a short run afterwards and the week is done! Physically I feel great. Mentally it is getting harder to get excited to start the workouts. I've had to switch up my playlists and routes to mix it up a bit.

What is everyone else doing this weekend? Quiet on here today. Is the weather finally decent up north?

I had to start to mix up my routes because it was also getting harder to want to go do the workouts. Once I found a half dozen ways to run and ride in my neighborhood, it has helped a lot. The swimming is still very boring for me after about 20-30 minutes though.

So I had my bike fitting yesterday and I found out that my seat post was about an inch and a half too low and my aero bars were about 1-2 inches too far out. I also had a tune up and a new chain installed. Today was my first ride out on it and the seat seems high but I guess it is fit correctly. It seems to be about 1-2 mph faster now and I don't know where that came from but even into te wind today, I was still going 15-17 mph.

The course I did today wasn't as flat as the IMAZ course so I think I'm going to have a good bike in 3 weeks. I've also rented Flashpoint 40's for the race and this will be my first time on race wheels and tires. It should be interesting to see if I notice anything with them. I would like to try a disc sometime but I'll work my way up to that.

It is nice seeing your body really get dialed in in the last few weeks of peak training. Tomorrow should be a really good test of my run off the bike with my triple brick workout. I also have a few OWS's planned for the next few weeks. I guess the lakes around here are in the high 60's right now which is perfect wetsuit swimming.

I'm going to try the Infinit again tomorrow and I'm going to mix it tonight so the foaming is gone by the time I use it. I should have my nutrition 100% dialed in by tomorrow.

I hope everyone is having a nice weekend doing whatever they want to do.

I haven't been able to get on BT last 2 days at my hotel and still can't. Using internet briefly at another hotel.

Camp training is done..almost 25 hours of training mostly cycling in 6 days. I believe it will help my FTP after my body absorbs the training. Strange but my legs felt better last few days than first.

Flying home tomorrow.

Have fun training folks!

Got outside on the bike for the first time yesterday. Very windy but it felt good to be out of the basement!

Did a SLOOOWWW.... eight mile run today. Short for many but this is the longest run I have done since I can remember and since I haven't run much at all in the last three weeks, I will enjoy the accomplishment no matter how slow it was Wink

I hope everyone is enjoying their Sunday. Weekends are way to short!

Fred Doucette - 2011-03-20 4:42 PM

What's on for Sunday training?

I did a 15 mile run. Went quite well, all Z1/2 stuff. Very nice weather out.

Hey Fred et. al. - I ran the local 1/2 marathon this morning just as a training run - nothing quite like having full support and 13000 other friends over the distance. Was happy with my time as I went very easy for the first 7 miles - and then zone three'd it for the rest. I thought I could bring it home in the last three miles, but I have NO turnover! Must be all this silly IM training... Laughing Good news is that it seems I can run a 7:10 for miles and miles - just don't ask me to go faster.

Spring break looks to be almost over - I just got packed up to head back to school in the morning. We have a chicken roasting with some yellow and green squashes, and a little bit of home made strawberry ice cream working, so tonight looks pretty darn good!

The triple brick is in the books. I had all kinds of problems but I just pushed through them. 1st hour on the bike I had a rear flat and my spare tube's valve stem was too short for my rims. I tried to pump it up but I couldn't get enough air in it so I did the walk of shame home and patched my other tube and continued. The 2nd hour on the bike my bike computer stopped working and I tried to get it working but it wouldn't go so I just pushed on. About a minute later I noticed that it had fallen off so I went back and found it. Oh well. The third hour on the bike my aero bottle pushed the start/stop button on my Garmin so I missed 22 min of the ride. No problem. The runs hurt my knees but I just pushed through it. Here's my workout.

50 min bike...14.08 miles (blow out and walk home)

30 min run...2.6 miles

1 hr 5 min bike...16.35 miles (3 hill repeats)

19 min run...1.61 miles

1 hr 3 min bike...16.67 miles

11 min run... .87 miles

The last hour was tough but I just kept going and pushing through. I had adequate nutrition and hydration today but it could have been better. These are the workouts that I think will really make a difference.

Kathleen, I'm so glad you were finally able to leave the trainer dungeon (basement) and ride outside! Very nice run today!

Rusty, congrats on an awesome race.

Todd, the HIM will be a breeze after the triple brick that you did today.

Hope everyone else had a great weekend. I'm looking forward to a schedule rest day tomorrow.
