I'm sitting here on couch... watching last year's Kona replay... Yesterday - I did 1/3 of the distance... 1/3 and I might have been able to finish an additional 1/2 marathon... Maybe...

So my wife sits down next to me and asks, "Is the olympics on?"...

I don't want to be the common interest story... I don't want to be the dad with cancer...

I just want to see if I can do it... Not because I want to prove to others that I can... I just want to know if I can...

Later...

My wife becomes glued to a story about a woman with colon cancer - "this is the stuff that makes me keep going when I'm watching at the gym."

So I say to my wife, "at some point - it has has to become your story of else it's just something on television." And I wonder if I can do it...

And I want to try to make it my story... I want to see if I can do it.

PS - Kevin - I want it to be your story!

The Kona thing is Rad! I finished HIM in 5:36. I think next year I can do it in under 5:00:00. Maybe that equates to a 11:00:00 IM the following year in 2014, possibly finishing in 10:00:someting the year after qualifying me for the big dance in Kona? Maybe. The dream is now alive though.

Gentlemen - Isn't tomorrow our final weigh in day. I ask because I've spent the last two days looking for my scale and I can't find it. Seriously. I will keep looking but I need to ask you for an extension because I won't find it before breakfast tomorrow.

I am golden on the weight...anyone who missed their weight, don't send me the 20 bucks...put in 10 bucks to future entry fees and 10 bucks to a tri related toy!

First off - way to go Thor on your weight loss. Impressive!

So, I found the scale yesterday afternoon and weighed myself mid-day. I was 179.4 - so I beat my goal and I am thankful for your support.

As for paying up - it's your call. I've been motivating myself for close to three months with the thought of drinking free beer - so if you have 20$ lying around - feel free to send a giftcard.

I would rather have you either - 1) Go double or nothing = if you make your goal by a certain day then you owe me nothing but if you don't, then you owe me 40$. 2) Take the $20 you would have sent me and use it to buy something that will make your goal a reality. It's your call - I just want to support you as y'all have supported me.

OK - now if I could just get some fricking sleep. With the century coming up in 72 hours, the last thing I need is insomnia.

Seriously, I threw in the towel 10 days ago. I needed the energy going into tri week. As it stands, I owe 3 of you gift cards. PM me your info, and I'll send you a card, no biggie.

For next years tri in June/July/Aug, I'd like to weigh closer to the 155 that my 5'6" frame says I should weigh. I'll keep plugging away.

Had a great time on the coast. Had MANY beverages and LOTS of seafood. FUN. No swims in the oceanFrown. I think I need a swim buddy or something. I've never swam in current, and don't know what to expect. So I start training again tomorrow. Still have a little knot in back of left calf from HIM. Hoping it goes away soon.

Hey if Kona is what you want then that is what you should go for! Keep up hard work and both of you should be there in no time!

I will personally show up on all of your doorsteps to collect the $20 and have a cold beer with you. David I may have to meet you half way in Banff or something...Smile

Good to see you had a great holiday Kevin. I don't blame you on holding back on the ocean swim, with riptides etc. it can be a dangerous place to swim alone!

It looks like I may have convinced my wife to do a tri...either a destination(airmiles to phoenix Nov.11) or one next spring. Gotta find her a bike, trainer etc. for the summer. Looking forward to a basement bike partner!

OK - So a quick question as I'm planning out my workouts for the next 3 months:

So I'm swimming and running on Tuesday and Thursdays each week (and in DH's honor - I'm biking to work on Mondays and Wednesdays). Tuesdays are my speed runs and I plan to run long on Thursday. So when should I do my short and long swims? Should I pair the swims so I go long in the pool and on the road on the same day or switch it up so I work on my speed in the pool on the day I go for a long run?

Did that make sense?

Hope all is well with everyone! I've spent the day unpacking and I've still got a ton to do before the kids get home tomorrow. Grr - I hate unpacking!

great job on planning your offseason! I say with wife, kids and a job be flexible in your training and choose the workout that suits the time available! Just get that workout in!

I am going to meet with a triathlon coach for my offseason. it is a gal my wife works with. she has done 2 or 3 ironmans and a shitload others. the price is right--free!

Just a side note on biking to work...don't you live on campus...Smile

I love puting a short swim after the day I go long on the bike, or the run. It's a good way to recover without taking an off day.

Yea - I got into the Kona replay this year because I had just completed the bike distance. For me - it's hard to imagine stringing together a century + a 2 mile swim and then capping it off with a marathon... The name is apt - it takes an iron man (and an iron will)...

Thor - I don't want Kona - although it would be a nice vacation with the family. I just want to do the distance. There is an iron man length Rev 3 race at Cedar Point - an amusement park in OH near where I grew up. I think if and when I do the deed - I'd like to do it there. The kids could ride the rides while I spend the entire day hoofing it around the park.

Kev's gonna do Kona. When he does, we might have to go out there and support him. It would be much better than Banff although that's pretty tempting.

Well tried the new bike shoes out yesterday...loved them but about a 1/2 size too big. Returning today and getting different pair. Unfortunately they don't have them in my size...

Tried running on track today...felt like I had a marble in my shoe...quit after two laps...debating whether to do sprint tri this weekend...could deal with the pain but will it set me back in recovery?

We are searching for a road bike for my wife...she is on board with doing a sprint. Would like to get a second fluid bike trainer but with bike purchase$$ etc. we might be sharing for awhile...

Also buying my son a mtn. bike for his birthday in September. Looking at the smallest adult bike. He turns 10. Slightly too big for him(but ridable) now but should be just right for him for the next few years! Nice Trek at the LBS but currently $500...not going to happen!

Kev - that's a good suggestion. I use the recovery swim a lot to heal those sore muscles while still burning some calories. But I wasn't clear when I asked the question - I want to know how to match up my workouts. Tu and Thurs are the days when I do my swim and run workouts. I need to schedule the following four workouts: long run/short run/ long swim/short swim I'm wondering which is best

1)
Tuesday Short Swim in the morning/speed run in afternoon
Thursday Long swim in the morning/long run in afternoon

Or

2)

First off - way to get the family going. Love the fact that you've got your son and wife on board with doing a triathlon. Too bad this sport is so frigging expensive!

Glad to hear the bike shoes felt good even if they were too big. It makes me think that once you get into a good shoe - your foot problems should get better.

As for your tri this weekend - I'd do it and play it by ear - you can get the swim and bike in without any problem... and if the pain gets too bad - you can walk to the finish. Plus - sitting around healing this week may be the thing you need not only to recover but also to PR this weekend!

One last thought - I'm a big fan of aqua jogging as a way to maintain your fitness while recovering from injury. A lot of places have extra aqua vests that you could use while you recover.

Get better soon. BTW - I've got cold beer in the fridge in case you decide to drive out here to share a cold one with me. If you wait a week - I'm putting a belgian triple on tap that I made myself - 9.5% ABV. I've also got a imperial IPA with 100 ibu that should be ready by early september.

Gotta love those IPA's!!

I would enter this weekend except entry fee is $105 for me and $60 for my son...a lot if I tank the run...decisions, decisions...

As for the running I will just skip it and bike and swim until I can run properly. Not like I have any races planned this winter.

I always lean on the side of caution with the injury thing. Maybe skip the sprint, and continue to heal. At the least, you'll already be out from "regular" running for a bit. If you do the Sprint, Yeah you'll finish, but at what cost to your foot?

Great for your wife and you that she's taking it up as well. You guys are a modern day tri family! Hope things work out on outfitting that. (bikes and equipement is spendy.) I'm still needing a cycle trainer as well. They have the knock of brands on craigslist currently in Spokane for $100. Anyone know about other brands other than Kurt Kinetic and Cycle Ops. I've heard those two brands in particular are real good. I'd as soon spend a little more ($100) than settle for a POS.

I like Option 2 given those choices. Then you can play around with intensities as well. This option has you pairing a Long with a short. (less overall stress on body) Option 1 has you pairing LONG/ with Long. Very taxing on body.

I'm just starting a new plan that has me 3x a week on each sport w/ one day of rest. I like the look of it, but I'm just starting the first week of 20 weeks. Planning around life is both challenging and difficult, and whatever you plan, has to work around life responsibilities. My plan is calling for 3 brick w/o a week prior to going in to work. I'll have to wait till school starts to see if it's doable, but it looks good on paper.

Hey if Kona is what you want then that is what you should go for! Keep up hard work and both of you should be there in no time!

Dude I think u got some real talent at this. To throw down that him time....that is great. A 2 year time line is about perfect.

Nice. If u got a pool near work u could swim in the morning. I mean, u should shower anyways right.

God that sounds tasty.

Unless I am pulling NHL strike pay salary I am sticking to Canadian tire for kids bikes.

I love puting a short swim after the day I go long on the bike, or the run. It's a good way to recover without taking an off day.

Or

2)

Tuesday Long Swim in the morning/speed run in afternoon
Thursday Short swim in the morning/long run in afternoon

I go with option two as well.

Speaking of beer, I am in the kelowna, wine country. But tree brewing has their shop here and they got these 500 ml cans for 2 bucks. Anyways, things r good. Taper is good. Mother it is hot here. Holidaying with a 1 and 3 year old is harder than any endurance event invented.

Agreed... And unlike an IM that would suck 18 hours from your life - deal with and keeping the kids safe never seems to end. However, as long as you don't do a crazy thing like having a 3rd child (only stupid people who have forgotten what it's like to have to change a diaper 5x per day - ie ME!), you are getting close to the half-way point.

When they are 3 and 5 - parenting gets so much easier.

Quick check in... First a confession - Now that I've reached my weight loss goal and finished the century - I've been eating like absolute $hit. I haven't eaten this poorly since Halloween of last year. Just this morning, I ate an entire container of tapioca pudding AFTER eating my oatmeal... After 8 months of eating like Richard Simmons - I wonder if my body and brain have basically said F this - where's the ice cream!!! I'm gonna give myself the rest of the week to eat whatever I want with the idea that it will be much easier to get back into the groove once school starts next week. We might need another bet to get down to my goal weight...

On a totally separate page - I'm giving serious consideration to doing a HIM in October. Rev 3 is holding one in MD in October and if all the stars line up - I might sign up for it. The bike section is in the bag - I wonder if I could be ready for the run and swim considering I haven't done either since mid july when I did my OLY. Thoughts?

Sounds like me. I stepped on the scale at 189.5 this morning. One week of "what happens in Long Beach WA, stays in Long beach WA" was enough to put me over the top.Smile

When in October? Might be a cool swim if it's towards the middle to end. I think the swim training would be easier than the run training. Would this replace your HM race already scheduled, or would you do both? Where will you start as far as your long run distance to give an idea of how far you would be building in that amount of time?

One of these days, I will be in Calgary and I will collect then...at a pub with lots of taps preferably!

How long are you in Kelowna for? If you are up in Penticton try the Cannery brewing. They have some nice IPA's. Check the liquor store for the Phillips brewing(victoria brewing company) hop pack(dozen bottles) a green box!

October 7 is the date... I'm not worried about the temp of the swim. They have a video from last years race and it looks like everyone is in a wetsuit - plus it's Maryland where they have baked all summer. I agree that the run will be the hard part - but I think I could make it happen if I adjusted my goals. During my Oly - I went all out... (and avoided a six pack of warm coors) but there would be nothing to stop me from using the Galloway method and taking walking breaks along the way.

The training question in regards to the run is a good one. I figure I have 5 1/2 weeks of training and 2 weeks of taper. What are your thoughts on this schedule.

Week 1 - 5
Week 2 - 7
Week 3 - 9
Week 4 - 6 (I think with the huge increase in training volume - I will definitely need a rest week or I would risk injury
Week 5 - 11
Week 6 - 14 (Fatigue on the run will be the toughest part of the race so going "the extra mile" would give me a boost of confidence that I could handle the run)
Taper Week 1 - 6
Taper Week 2 - Race

Finally - there is a month between the HIM and the HM. So I would do both.

Thoughts?
