Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Against my better judgement, went out for a run in the heat of the day. I'm trying hard to stick with this MAF thing, I've got the book (but I'm saving it for a 4 hour flight to CA on Friday), but I actually am getting slower in the handful of runs I've done. The first few were up in the mid 11 minute pace, I had one that was high 10, then my last three have been over 12 minute miles. Is that to be expected? I know and was prepared to have to slow down quite a bit, but after a couple weeks I'm only getting slower to keep my heartrate in the MAF zone. Today I finally broke down and just ran the last .5 mile at whatever pace I felt like regardless of heart rate, which is the only reason my avg. pace for today's run was just over 11/mile. The first two miles were 12:06 and 12:12. Do I need to just shut up, read the book and stop whining?

Its too much up and down or is that what every bodies looks like?? http://connect.garmin.com/activity/185726491 Matthew, That's what happens when you run up a hill and don't slow down. Your heart rate spikes. Garmins do mess up, but it is usually the first mile of the run, usually because of insufficient moisture between the heart strap and your chest. But your spike was that you were running fast (8:50 miles) up a hill. As soon as you reached the top of the hill, your heart rate came down again. Hills are like that. |

Regular![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Okay, here is a question about MAF for all of you. I have a sprint coming up in 3 weeks and I have been training at MAF for about 2.5 weeks. I am seeing improvements in my long runs, but think I should be adding speed work into my workouts to prepare for my sprint. A fellow triathlete who usually finishes in the top 5 told me I will never improve my speed without doing more speed work. He actually says that I should not be doing anything longer than 4 mile runs and they should be all out or at my goal race pace for the sprint. I do know that the MAF training is helping because I started 2 weeks ago with a MAF pace of just over 14 min. miles and today I ran 7 miles at a 10:30 pace. I also felt great during and after the run. Any thoughts on this logic? Any training ideas for the next 3 weeks to help me improve my speed? |

From what I understand and have learned here at BT, that's not necessarily very good advice. It sounds to me like a good way to get injured and to burnout on your training. It may work for your friend however if they've been at this for a long time and built up their body to be able to take such punishment. I think that in my case that attitude towards my training, running so close to or at my race pace all the time, has only lead to nagging aches, pains and injuries. What say you Ernesto, is that accurate? |

I'm just getting started with the MAF program, but I'm hoping to start one speed work or faster run per week in addition to the slower MAF runs. Build a powerful motor first, then add in speed work. The first 90 days I stayed sub-MAF, then slowly introduced speed work. I have only done 3 speed sessions. Now I am running at about the same speed I was before the MAF traing but my heartrate is lower by about 10 bpm. Don't worry about speed, you are not going to lose anything by training at MAF, unless you count the minor things like knee and back pain, or in my case achilles tendonitis. Race at race speed.
