Happy to report two things: 1) I took action to start getting myself back on track by hitting the bike last night and the pool this morning.  Have to tell you that it was brutal getting out the door this morning.  But I made it and am a happier man for it. 2) My birthday dinner was awesome.  We went to Ted's Montana grill and had an amazing burger (if there is one in your area go because the food is amazing), 2) a harpoon and a Sam Adam's Spring (one of their beers I actually like) and 3) the most amazing service I have ever experienced.  Then I came home, had some cake, and split a Hitachino Nest Beer White Ale - which was good but not great.  All in all, a very nice day!

Finally - I just read this morning that Founder's beer is coming to Canada.  Founders is one of the US top breweries.  Keep your eyes open.  Their IPA, breakfast stout, and kriek (yes - a fruit beer for you KevinWink) are outstanding!

Hope everyone has a great day!

Burd - 2013-02-25 4:58 PM Does everyone bike in bike specific shorts or tri shorts to get used to less padding?  Was getting ready to pick up a new pair but due to the cost I  can only get one pair right now.

I just use my tri shorts.

Hoping to pick up  a couple of pair at the Pearl Izumi outlet in Orlando, the end of March. Hopefully they have some good deals. Picked up a tri top at a pretty good price at PI outlet in Arizona last year.

Well folks I have been MIA the past week. Busy with life...

Still managing to squeek in a bit of training here and there.

Pushup challenge has fallen off the map. Hope to restart again. How is everyone else doing with it?

Should be able to nail the 27 in 28 February challenge.

Gotta start signing up for some races. Waiting to see what my son's lacrosse schedule will be, but unfortunately most early registration deals are March so I may have to bite the bullet on a couple and hope for the best!

Also debating whether to sign up for the Long Beach half marathon in October.

Picked up a couple of hockey games. Good fun but the kill my Monday run workout!

Have a good one everyone!

We went to Ted's Montana grill and had an amazing burger (if there is one in your area go because the food is amazing)

The grocery store by my house used to stock ground bison, but I think I was the only one who ordered it.  Once I buy a house and a freezer, I look forward to buying frozen bison online (so the prices aren't whole-foods insane).

A nice 3,000 yards in the pool this morning, which is particularly gratifying in that three months ago I was struggling with 1,500 yards.  I was a bit time-crunched, or it would have been a full two miles this morning.

Pretty Pumped here, it was almost above freezing today, annnnd I got in my first run on the Half-Marathon plan...I consciously forced myself to go slow, due to a few things. Firstly, I really want to keep this up, and so I am going to need to reduce the pounding on my back until I have dropped enough weight to make it happy, secondly is the sidewalks were "slippery as a snot greased pump handle!"  Warm temperatures, although very welcomed, have started the spring thaw a  little bit.

Hoping to get my pushups in before bed tonight, but I work til 10:40....we'll see

It feels with my knee and not being able to run I am running out of time to get ready for a May sprint.  Is this correct or am I just being paranoid?  What if I can't run until mid March or worse, later?  I am trying to get into the pool 5 days a week but will that be enough to carry me through the bike and run?  Please help because depression is knocking on the door and I won't answer.  I keep telling myself if I swim daily that handles the cardio and I can always pedal slow or walk/run.  Maybe since this is my first tri I am over thinking this (who...me...think too much, never Innocent, haha)

One thing to do is to look at some race results - for example, from the Chicago sprint, and there's plenty of folks with finish times near 3 hours.   In short, don't worry about it, you're probably working harder than a good number of folks who are going to be there.

In your town (Timmins) I think the meat is frozen after it dies and hits the ground.

Paranoid.

you and I are in a similar position. I am looking at 2 weeks with no running myself.

as I mentioned before, my problem was needing more strength training. Power90 (p90) can do this or a lot of money spent at PT.

This is a fun journey towards your first tri. I know there is a lot of stress involved around it but try to have fun, enjoy how your body is changing and the fact that you are a triathlete! We all will/are having setbacks. That is the way life goes and a challenge for us to meet. I look at mine challenge as an opportunity to do the strength training that I knew I should do but just told myself that s.b.r. was enough.

Thanks Bobby.  I think the p90x may be a bit to hard core for me now but after reviewing the p90x yoga part I think I can do that, but skip the knee parts for now.  Says good for core plus should help me get more flexible.  Those folks look like they are busting their a$$es in the yoga video.  I was afraid to get injured again on something so intense as the whole system.  I can say I learned the hard way to not over do it but take my time and it will come.  Thanks again for the reassurance that it's in my mind.

So I did the math.  There are 72 days between 2/27 and your tri 5/11.  Let's say you rehab the knee for 2 weeks - that leaves you with 58 days or 8 weeks.

I would say that is definitely doable.  Most plans are for 11 weeks and you are not starting with zero fitness.  You've been working hard for months.  So, I think you could easily make it happen.  You can make things easier on yourself by doing intervals where you run for a few minutes and then walk for a few.  Last year, I started running in late March and managed to complete a sprint in May...

Managed to get my first run in this evening despite a crazy day at work.  To make it happen, I ran around the building where my son was having his scout meeting.  I'm sure the kids and parents thought I was a little nuts.  but hey - having people chuckle at you is better than having to drink Coors Light.

Onward and thanks for the support!

PS - Anybody read Iron War about the 1989 IM in Kona where the current record was set. - and amazing story and a fabulous read.

No beer tonight... saving up for a beer tasting on Thursday.

In the famous words of Tony Horton....everybody with me now....

"DO YOU BEST AND....FORGET THE REST"

Dont worry too much about going to hard core with it Alex, they always have people doing modified moves that are easier, and if it feels to strenuous just take a break!

Greetings BDAS:We are midway through the week and thankfully March is almost here. I don't know about you but life, work, and injuries have been getting in the way of my workout mojo. As we head towards the weekend, lets redouble our efforts to get out there and get it done so we will be ready for those races coming up before you know it. Be sure to post your victories as well as your challenges so that the group can cheer you on and help get you to that start line. Also be sure to check in on each other with likes as that's a little more personal way of being supportive. The fact that the majority of us are still here says something about your all's (or as Bobby might say down in texas - y'all) commitment and I applaud you for it!

Thanks for the pep talk. Being born in Canada has prevented me from saying y'all.

Alex always seems to help me get on course with his questions or challenges. All of this is about getting healthy, being active, eating better (to feel better and hopefully prolong our time on earth), setting a good example for others and having fun with training. That is what takes the time and has the ups and downs. That is the part that we need to enjoy (at least some of the time) and try not to stress too much about our races. I was freaking out about my first HIM until a lot of you helped me to relax about it. Thank you for that!!!

2 hour bike this am and off for a swim at lunch.

Hi all,

Skipped the gym in the morning on monday because I convinced myself I would just go in the afternoon.  Ended up not going to the gym afterwork and went home and ate terribly.  Before bed I read through the posts from over the last few days.  There is a lot of support for people when you have a bad day or give into those weak moments in this group. That support and positivity helped me get up tuesday morning and hit the gym.  I just think if they can so can I.

I ran my best 5k time (30 min), did the most continuous pushups Ive been able to do in the past few yrs (20 with great form) and then swam 1,100yds all before work.  It makes you think life can get in the way and you'll have a bad training/diet day but you can always go tomorrow and make it right.

Thanks for the motivation

I ran my best 5k time (30 min), did the most continuous pushups Ive been able to do in the past few yrs (20 with great form) and then swam 1,100yds all before work.  It makes you think life can get in the way and you'll have a bad training/diet day but you can always go tomorrow and make it right.

Thanks for the motivation

NICE WORK!!!!!

Hit the pool today after taking my daughter to music class....

thats right our 9 month old daughter has a music class.... Are you thinking what I thought when I first heard that? 9 months old cant learn music....

Well I am telling you...that was AWESOME!!!...Our good friend started this program for children under school age called the MUSIC TREE... so it is nice to support her in her endeavor, but I was blown away by how fun it is and how interactive these little babies get! All the parents, (I should say Mom's because yep you guessed it I was the only Dad there) sit with their children in a circle and our friend (instructor) leads us through singing to the kids, playing with shakers, sitting the kids in a middle of a multi-coloured parachute and singing to them, dancing around holding them and singing to them...etc.... Anyways this was the first time I took our little lady because Mom had a dentist appoitment....and it was Awesome!!

Ok ok, non Tri related rant over...  back to the pool.

Great swim, did a set of 3X100 and banged up a  1:37/100m !!! This is definitely close to the fastest I have ever swam in my life!!! super pumped!
