Beantown | Subject: RE: QUEEN ZIP & KathyG - CLOSEDQueenZipp - 2009-04-06 6:58 AM CAT, I have been hinking about your question. My gut is that over the off season you're probably fine with 1 hr rides then building as you move closer to your race season into longer efforts. A lot of short rides will still get the tushie used to being in the saddle--but eventually you want to make your legs crank longer. speaking of tushies - OUCH! my bum muscles and hamstrings are KILLING today - our course yesterday was very hilly; i bought a foam roller last week but i think i need a professional Jessie - hope you are enjoying your pre-race glow!!! |

Thanks Judi...my thinking is Im always going to get at least one LONG ride on the weekend..so Im not loosing any of that endurance training... plus a medium endurance ride most weekends as well Its just a what to do with the other rides I guess during the week... |

Master 2146![]() ![]() ![]() East Side of the Bay | Subject: RE: QUEEN ZIP & KathyG - CLOSEDHi All! Happy Birhtday Cat!! Yes I agree your photo reflects all your hard training this season. I used an off season winter cycling plan from BT this past winter. It used either a power meter or heart rate monitor to assess training level. It is in the old mentor forum section under increase your cycling power. Jorge M set it up and has all the data/workouts on his blog. they were great and my power increased alot!! You might want to check it out. Although it is set up for trainers I'm sure a clever young lass like you could adapt it to the road. |

CG has suggested two interval sessions... one that includes a few 'hill sprints' (I dont go fast up hills no matter how I try!) so that my two weekend rides are just endurance rides and my mid week rides are speed and strength... coupled with a good strength/stretch/core routine (not that he has defined what that would be) I love to ride... Im not so good with structure of the rides... Im guessing I need to be! I would be horrified if people didnt swim with a purpose... not sure why I think its ok for me to do other workouts without one! |

I do not ride with a "purpose". Never have. I ride because I love to ride with every fiber of my being......because there are country roads that beckon.....because there are hills to zoom down at 70kph.....becase I would rather be riding my bike than doing just about anything else! In fact I know that I will just ride the heck outta my Cervelo to train for the upcoming HIM...I won't follow the plans recommendations.......because I fear that it would suck the joy out of it for me. Ride because its fun. That is a purpose!! Please feel free to ignore the above advice because of its hippy dippy nature.......but I am kind of a hippy dippy girl! |

Im not so good with structure of the rides... Im guessing I need to be! I would be horrified if people didnt swim with a purpose... not sure why I think its ok for me to do other workouts without one! I love to ride like Helen does. Right now my love to ride is being put to the side some to do my training as my goal to improve currently overshadows my love to ride. Soon I'll get on my trainer and do this crazy workout with Z3/4 intervals with this RPM and that. I do like doing intervals but it isn't like riding outside seeing the world from a saddle. Weather would permit me to ride outside but workout is tough to do on the roads close to home. I like the structure of a plan and having a coach tell me what to do. When I have the choice I waste way to much time thinking about what to do instead of doing it. We do this for fun and we all have different reasons for participating and look to get different things out of this sport. I ordered a bike box today as my first tri is in just under 3 weeks and I'm flying in the weekend before to visit with a BT friend and do some riding. My husband is driving down to FL a few days later and I don't want to be without my bike for 4 days. |

I think I need at least arm warmers and gloves for winter... Especially if I intend to try riding all year around - has anyone got any other tips for riding all year round? (just remember it gets cold and wet sometimes but it doesnt snow here!) haha well it IS for me! Ha! I assume you're talking celsius. I've been riding all winter here as long as there's not a lot of snow on the road-- hasn't gotten quite down to 11ºF (dunno, maybe it has... I stopped looking at the weather reports for a while cause it would make me colder!), but probably with the wind chill a couple of days it was close. What do you have for cool/wet weather riding gear? As far as gloves go, I've found that generic goretex gloves (windproof and slightly water resistant) beat a lot of cycling gloves for warmth. I have a nice pair of Perl Izumi Cyclones that have great padding for long rides, but I don't wear them in the winter or even cooler spring/fall temps here... I definitely prefer my cheapo EMS gortex ones since they keep my hands warmer and don't hold in the moisture when it rains-- the Cylcone padding turns into sponges! |
