No, my bath. What was the different "style" in this set versus what you had been doing at Masters' class? In my masters' class, I am so much slower than everyone else, I usually end up doing a modified version of what they all do, focusing on what I am primarily interested in, which is endurance. No one seems to mind. |

Royal(PITA) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Leah, My coach has been doing a lot of sprint and IM work lately. Most of the sets he posts have nothing longer than 150 yds. Whoop de doo.....GailG (big shout out to her quiet wisdom) sent me a couple workouts from LA tri club. I used one of those today. The main set was 3x (3x100 desacending + 1x200 EZ had maybe 15-20 sec rest on the 100's. It was hard work, but I did more than 600 yards more in that set in 50 minutes than I have =been doing in my Master's class in an hour. A typical masters class has been 8x25 stroke 3x100 free repeated x3 (maybe). Lucky if we do 2000 yards and a lot of focus on IM which is okay in the off season but we're headed into race season and the fly just isn't going to be a tri stroke for me! I can barely do it or the breast stroke and at least breast has application for hard water recovery to sight quickly and regroup. For me it was a matter of swimming a longer set on less rest to build my confidence in the swim. My stroke count was probably higher but overall I don't think my form suffered too much. |

I see what you mean. I swim at the Rose Bowl (as does Gail, albeit at different times) and every day is devoted to a different type of workout. Monday is mid-distance day, Tuesday is distance day, Wednesday is speed day, Thursday is IM day and Friday is either mid-distance or distance. I forget what Saturday is. There is always a warm-up followed by kicking, pulling or drills or a combo. Then the main sets. I don't know what the overall distance that the entire workouts usually are, I just do what I can do in the time I have, but I am quite sure that most of the workouts are probably in the 3,000-4,000 meter range. Maybe more. Probably more, now that I think about it. I don't mind having IM day once a week and if I don't feel like doing IM (like this Thursday, two days before my race) I will mostly just swim free, with maybe a little stroke work just to feel like part of the gang. I would not want stroke work every session. I have been swimming two days a week (Tuesdays and Thursdays), but with IM training starting in April, I am going to add Mondays as well. I don't usually log the full workouts in my training log, but (if I can remember the whole thing) I can start doing that, if you would find that to be helpful. I probably would not be able to remember the split times (I can't ever make them anyway and so don't pay attention to them). |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Lisa - I want to hear about your race!! Hope it was a great success! Queenie - I think it is a good move to try a new coach. After 4 years, switch it up! Glad you had a nice swim. Garceau - Welcome! You sound just as nuts as the rest of us!! Can't wait to hear more about you and more about this BET! Good luck! Leah - Either your bike guy is superman or he is thinking of different hills! I'm stoked you are thinking about a tri bike now. I think it is going to be a LONG week for us. I'm sick already thinking about it. I can't imagine how it will be the day before. KATES UPDATE: I'm embarrassed to admit this. I skipped my Open Water Swim today. I did. I admit it. I had my stuff all laid out. I printed out my directions. I knew I'd have to give myself 1.5 hours to get there. I was prepared. When i woke this morning I felt sick. I had serious tummy problems. I couldn't imagine driving with those problems at 5:45 in the morning. I called my Bro in law and cancelled on him. (He was doing the full OLY) Once I got up and moving, I saw that I was just nervous. UGH! I should have went. I so NEEDED that swim. I know that I need more time in water and especially the Open Water. What did I do??! To tried to redeem myself I swam this afternoon. I did my 2000m swim but in the POOL. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Well, Kate, there wasn't much in the way of "fitness" that the swim was going to achieve, just mental preparedness. So, you can probably do the mental preparedness without the water. That water would be different from the Oceanside Harbor anyway. You will be fine. Just have some sort of mantra that you tell yourself and let's go out and do it and have fun. With all this "training," I myself have lost sight somewhat of the fun aspect. That's what this is about, isn't it? One thing that I just realized, that with scaled back workouts, I will need to scale back calories as well. I have been aiming for 1700 per day and I think I will drop down to 1500. |
![]() ![]() |
![]() Hello, Crazy People -- I like to lurk in your thread in part because Leah lives down the street from me but also because I will be at Oceanside to cheer for you...now that you are actually talking about me and because Leah pmed me about a related thing, I thought I'd pop in to clarify a few things. I do in fact swim at the same masters program with Leah, but mostly because I think it is fun to be social. I think those workouts are not as great as they might be. For ex., I think the warmup is usually too long, especially lately when it takes up 35% of the hour and has no structure. I also think the intervals and rests should vary more depending on the distance of the set. I am a fan of a shorter warmup, a primary drill or sprint set, a main set with a specific focus that is related to triathlon racing, and then a cool-down. But I am a strong swimmer for my AG so I don't stress about it; I go a few times a week and also try to swim once a week or so on my own and/or open water. The workouts I sent to Judi were from my personal tri coach and are published on the LATriClub website under the Training tab. There are links to a handful of specific workouts with specific purposes (swim, bike, AND run), and there is also a link http://www.latriclub.com/resources/article_detail.php?id=1654to a DVD series that my coaches have developed. The swim DVD is all on drills and has a page of swim workouts that you can print out of your computer. They are organized in a periodized schedule -- workouts for base, workouts for build, workouts for taper, etc. I would post a direct link, but BT has (or at least had) a policy about embedding links to organizations that compete with their sponsors/official coaches. If you can't follow the link above, PM me for more info. The whole DVD series is fab and well worth the money. Leah, they also offer monthly coaching, plans for specific (esp. local) races, and one-on-one workouts. It is a company owned by the head coach of our tri club, and ALL of their coaches are excellent. Plenty to choose from, to ensure the right personality match. In re Oceanside, I will be in medical, and I expect NOT to see any of you. Finally, maybe you were a little crazy when you first considered signing up. But now you are all well trained, and nobody except you yourselves would ever question whether you "belong" at the race. Don't sabotage your race by selling yourselves short! You all rock.

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I have been flip flopping back and forth. One minute I know I can do it, and the next minute I am freaking out and miserable. I need to find some balance this week. This week I hope to Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate and try to remember I am doing this for fun and fitness. I also need to remember that this is a training for the IMAZ. This will be a good test of where i am at. I've just got to keep my mind STRONG!! |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Thanks, Gail. That's interesting about the Rose Bowl workouts. I don't really have any experience with anything else other than them. I don't concern myself with the intervals or the rests because I usually swim on a different schedule than the rest of the people. I go, put in my time, swim a predetermined number of meters and get out. If I do my own thing, David doesn't hassle me about it. However, I'm about to start going on Mondays and Chad is usually a little less tolerant of my free-wheeling. I will probably not go with coaching. My schedule tends to fluctuate and I have to change workouts. If I have devised my own schedule and I miss a workout, I know what the point was of that workout and how to rearrange the rest of the workouts to achieve the goal. I end up doing that anyway with my coach's workouts. I went with this coach because he leads group rides with another group and I could go along. Well, that worked out once so that isn't really worth the extra money. It would have been otherwise. Anyway, I will probably start with the BT 20 week training program and adapt it to my 30 weeks before IMAZ. I might take advantage of TTS Coaching's one-on-one bike marker sessions. I certainly hope I don't need your services in the medical tent. Fortunately I have never needed medical attention during a race. My only issue is my legs/calves will cramp severely during the swim. I attribute that to the cold and it doesn't seem to matter whether I wear a wetsuit or not. It never happens with pool swimming and it ALWAYS happens in ows. But, after I survive the swim, I should be OK. We have certainly put in the training time and will most likely do fine. I just figured I would be better/stronger on the bike by this point. Anyway, thanks for your insight. Hope to see you in Oceanside (but not in the medical tent). |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hi Guys (well ladies and Scott)! I am still nursing the bad ankle. It is still swollen. I think I twisted it the other day. I couldn't even wear my regular ankle socks today. I feel bad having missed the half marathon but I couldn't run 3 minutes now. It is better then the other day though. I think I found the link to track you guys. Kate's link was sending me to her cable co., I found one on ironman.com but it was only for IM Singapore last week. I'm sure it will be for IM CA 70.3 later this week. I hope Kate and Leah will take it easy (pot calling the kettle black). |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I had a bit of an epiphany yesterday. I went on a trail run, only 3 miles so I figured it fit into an active recovery/taper kind of thing, and it was SO MUCH fun. So freeing. Simply wonderful. And then I realized that all this training is not fun. It is work, hard work. Sort of like having a second job. And for what? To prove to myself that this middle-aged, non-athletic woman can do an Ironman? Yep. That's the reason. Is it a good enough reason? I'm not so sure. I'll let you know in November. So I guess the challenge is to figure out how to get this creaky body IM-ready, but still have fun doing it. That might be an impossible challenge. Have a good day everyone. |

Royal(PITA) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() You are right, Leah. This SHOULD be fun. Yes, it's hard work....but there's no sense in not having fun in the process! To that end, I am leaving my swim coach. His workouts and I just do not gel well and I am not improving. He offers minimal suggestions and if you look at the email I put in my blog from him....he said a whole lot of nothing to insinuate I am not working hard. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Ladies we need more HIM details... Like - what are you wearing? what are your nutrition goals/plans? are you carrying any good luck charms/bike mascots? what will be your recovery meal? what's your mantra/s? etc. etc. ![]() I took my bike into the shop today and they fixed me up with some spacers on my aerobars and an adjustment to my seat (it was pointing too far down) - so i'm hopeful that those two fixes will help with some of the issues i've been having with fit on longer rides. We took advantage of Ben & Jerry's free cone day today - "training ride" to two different shops - I had a Chocolate Fudge Brownie Cone and a Coffee Coffee Buzz Buzz Buzz Cone. I can't even remember the last time I had ice cream so this was a REAL treat. ![]() Gonna get a walk in tonight, was supposed to swim today, but between spring break weird hours and our ride I couldn't get to the pool - so will walk for peach! |
![]() ![]() |
Veteran![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Kiri - I'm so jealous of the Ben & Jerry's Free Cone day! There aren't any Scoop Shops near me without driving to downtown Baltimore..and I don't really need it anyway! I'm getting psyched for Kate & Leah's HIM this weekend!! I'm getting nervous too! You're making me skidding for mine in June! A little more than 3 weeks until Rumpass, first sprint of the season! I'm getting better in my training, I'm feeling stronger on the bike but I'm slacking in the swimming. I'm checking into the Master's swim to start next week and found out that one of the bikers in my riding group is a swim teacher at the Michael Phelp's Swim School so I'm going to inquire. Only got 15 miles in Sunday on our ride but they were only going to do 10 miles but since only a few of us showed up I was all in, got some good advice from my friends that have done IMs and tri's on the regular. I'll get more biking in this week for Queen's celebratory bike ride "50"!! After the ride I came home, grabbed something to eat then went for a run around my neighborhood. It was GREAT! My legs were tired but I kept pushing myself and felt fine. So I just need to extend the time each weekend! Dr's office called today to let me know that my orthotics are in so I need to schedule an appointment! I also got new sneakers over the weekend..same old reliable Brooks Ariel for my over pronation..but hey, if it works, right? This weekend is the Multisport Expo where I'm doing a Total Immersion swim clinic (only an hour, but hoping for some more good advice) and I'll be looking for a wetsuit and transition bag! |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() kirih - 2010-03-23 6:12 PM Ladies we need more HIM details... Like - what are you wearing? what are your nutrition goals/plans? are you carrying any good luck charms/bike mascots? what will be your recovery meal? what's your mantra/s? etc. etc. ![]() ! I'm not sure what I will be wearing. For sure the black tri shorts, but I don't know yet what on top. My new tri top is a little snug so I might just wear a sports bra. I have done virtually all of my triathlons in a sports bra and bike shorts. This will be step in the tri direction by wearing tri shorts. Nutrition is something I have thought about and I think I did nutrition right for the half marathon and my recent oly. I will have a breakfast of yam, banana and sliced turkey when I first get up, several hours before the race. I will have a couple dates when I leave the transition area to go to the swim start. I will have some more yam before starting the bike and will take a banana, a couple Lara bars and some dates and dried pineapple with me on the bike. Some combination of about 400-600 calories. I figure to be on the bike no less than four hours. Actually, four hours is my fantasy time. And I will take more Lara bars and dates with me on the run. For a recovery meal, primarily I will try to get some protein, along with carbs, as soon after the race as possible. Probably sliced turkey and whatever fruit they are passing out at the end, assuming they have anything left by the time I finish. Anyway, what I aim for are high glycemic "real" foods and so far it has worked for me. I never feel like eating during a race and so have to make a conscious effort to eat at prescribed intervals. I only have one water bottle cage on my bike and if I need more, will have to take what they are offering on the course. I don't do mantras or good luck charms, but maybe I ought to start. I am mentally more at ease today than I was yesterday. Probably has something to do with reminding myself that this is only for fun. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() This is a VERY stressful week for me. I have a huge two day work event with a late night on on Thursday. I had to do a stressful staff "evaluation" at work. I am in charge of my kids soccer teams so I need to pick up uniforms and get signatures on soccer documents. I need to pack. I need to get my last few work outs. I need to pack my family for their drive to San Diego. Fly to San Diego Friday afternoon arrive at 3:00 and get up to get my race packet by 8:00pm. Not ideal. UGH. Luckily my husband is being a rock! Hear are my HIM details: Wearing: I'm wearing my TYR one piece tri-suit for the full race with my sports bra underneath. It isn't flattering so, plus I am self conscious, so I will wear a sleeveless training shirt over it for the bike and run. I'm thinking of wearing a bright yellow shirt to match my bike and to represent my AZ Sunshine! Nutrition: I am not much of a morning eater so I think I will do my fiberone breakfast bar and/or a banana when I wake up. I plan on doing a gu every 45 minutes on the bike and a 1/2 bagel around mile 35/40 on the bike. I also try to remember myself to drink at least every 15 minutes. (After my dehydration or heat issue i had after a sprint last fall) I have a couple salt sticks to take during the bike as well. Haven't thought much about my after race meal. What ever it is I think a beer will be involved. Charms/Mantra: I find my self on the swim chanting in my head my two kids names during the strokes and breathing on my husbands name. I can't remember when i started that. Must of been when I needed some inspiration to keep going. On the hills, I always say . . . "just keep spinning, just keep spinning, you can do it, just keep spinning" I might wear a pair of my daughter's earings for good luck. Thanks to everyone for their support. It will be interesting. |
