Today: Indoor bike ride 19 Mi, 1:00

Total: 6 days, 4:43:40

Today is our 2nd round Presidential election in Guatemala and I'm part of the team responsible for observing the elections on behalf of the private sector and ensuring all takes place under the rule of law.  I started at 5:00 the process and it's an all day event, but was able to sneak out to get my daily workout in!  Unfortunately, we are not too excited by either of the two candidates, so it will be a matter of choosing among the lesser of two evils.  Hope everyone is having a good weekend!

Hey! Mark is in the lead, not me! Tell HIM to speed up.

By the way, I think we should all understand how this is going to end. Ernesto is going to hang back and be hours behind, but still exercise every day, and then on the last day do a 16 hour bike ride.

Hey Ernesto. While writing this I just saw your post! Congrats on getting in. What's your goal time?

I would like to break 11 hours on this one. I figured that most of the time saving has to be done running, so I need to do a sub 4 hour marathon (less than 9 minute miles). It may not sound like much but running a marathon after almost seven hours of racing can be tough.

I have faith though, and I'll put all the hard work to make it happen.

Thank God I was ready at noon, the race sold out in fifteen minutes and it takes about ten to fill out the application even if going real fast with some pre filled fields.

Wow, I don't remember this thread being so busy in a while. I'm glad that everybody is enthusiastic about putting in their training every day. Remember, you don't have to be fast, just persistent. Leave gas in the tank so next day is not hard, hopefully by the end of the month you will see some nice adaptations to frequency in your bodies and you will be glad you did it.

Stay focused like you have been! everybody is doing great and anyone can win the aluminum foil medal and bragging rights!!

Thanks for introducing the Nov. challenge to the group!  If I stick with it this will be my best month ever from a consistency and possibly volume perspective.  Yes, a very high % will be low intensity but I'm hoping that it gives me the ability to move into December and focus on intensity on the bike (Jorge Cycling program now downloadable into your training plan on BT) while maintaining volume for run.  Wild card will be swimming.  I hope to get to the pool this week and get into at least two swims per week and maintain that for a bit and then add a third.  In short - the Nov. challenge is forcing me to get back in the saddle - especially keeping up with all the Warriors we have in this group. Hooya!

chris2533 - 2011-11-05 11:08 AM Today, 8 mile run, 1:10:56 Total: 5 days, 5 hours 30 minutes. So Saturday mornings is when my wife and I run with the run club associated with our fitness club. Usually it meets at 8 AM but today they had a special "Yoga for runners" event at 7 AM. Yoga is hard. Some of the women, like my wife, do it regularly and twist themselves into pretzels and do all these poses effortlessly. Not so me. Second issue for me is that it is well known that aerobic exercise makes you hungry. That's physiological. But for me it also creates a huge sense of entitlement as in "I biked an hour this morning. I can eat half a 14" pizza." Which is basically what I did last night. I'm exercising a lot and simultaneously gaining weight.

Chris,

Weight gaining for athletes is very deceiving, you may be gaining muscle from S/B/R while body fat percentage goes down (or not). But don't look at the overall number, look for other signs like abdominal fat, gluteus, legs... I gained an enormous amount of weight in the last three years (about 20 punds) but a big deal of that is muscle in my legs.

Go back to your Maffettone Big Book and read the nutrition tips again. I know I'm preaching in underwear, I should do it too.

Today: Indoor bike training 1:00:20, 18.4 Mi

Total: 7 days, 5:43:58

On a separate note, today I visited a sports medicine physician to get the outer-right knee pain that I developed after the Chicago Marathon checked out.  Even thought I felt I was already getting better and able to run longer before it would show up again (at a lower intensity), I thought it would be good to get a knowledgeable opinion in order not to jeopardize anything for the longer term.

I seem to have a common injury for runners, a sore ITB muscle (goes from the hip to the outer knee) and can be caused by a number of factors.  In my case, I have some marked pronation which could be part of the cause (I already use shoes with support for pronators: Brooks Trance 9 and now Asics Kayano 17).  Today I got an injection to reduce the inflammation (supposedly faster than continuing with the ice/ibuprofen routine) and an appointment to get customized shoe insoles and a pelvic ex-ray.

Has anyone tried customized insoles for running and if so, did they help at all? Anyone else had ITBS issues before and how did you deal with it?  Thanks!

Today. 1:30:58 bike class.

Gabe,

I'm convinced all this pronation stuff is just complete and utter bullish!t. We were born to run. We evolved to run. We don't need special equipment and inserts to do it. For decades runners have been getting more expensive and thicker shoes, more inserts, and MORE injuries. Sometimes I get outer hip soreness too. Stretch. Do the yoga pigeon pose a lot (it's great). Find other stretches for runners.
Another favorite I don't know the name of. Start on floor in lotus position. Raise right knee and put right foot flat on the ground on the outside of your left knee (which is still on the floor). So again, left leg is on floor as in lotus, but right leg has knee up in the air near your chest with right foot outside left knee. Now hug your right knee with your left elbow and twist your upper body to the right, supporting yourself with your right hand on the floor. You should feel a great stretch of your right hip. Do again, but everything switched left right.

Finally, read "Born to Run." It's really a fun read.

Ok. I'll stop preaching now. (And I'm not in my underwear. I'm in my pajamas.)

BTW, I've never heard the expression "preaching in my underwear" either. I like it.

7 days 6:43:03  I went to the movies tonight!  All workout and no play makes Jackie a dull girl.

So I am enjoying this November challenge.  The song from Top Gun "Playing With the Boys" keeps coming to mind.

Congratulations Ernesto, I love Florida!

Gabe,

Try the foam roller.  I too have IT band issues every once in a while.  I've become a believer in the foam rolling.  The chiro said to exercise, roll and then stretch.

I second Chris on this one. Even though I don't go as far as Vibram Five Fingers, ALL of my shoes are minimalistic, even though I'm a heavy runner (182 lbs) I have no injuries whatsoever. The foot is an incredible machine that you hinder when you encase it in protection (orthotics, big outsoles, etc).

If you have a big deal of pronation, I suggest you start trying Newtons, racing flats or Zoots, and make a conscious effort to land on the midfoot/outer section of the foot.

Read born to run, it goes long ways to explain that we humans are natural long distance animals. And that we need minimal protection from the environment around our feet.

And btw, in 2008 I did White Rock Marathon and had illotibial band issues just like you. Solution: I ditched my Brooks Adrenalines and switched to Newtons (I did my first IM on a pair of those too).

Try yoga too but don't stretch before you run or after. Warm up instead. I would do yoga but it makes me wanna fart real bad, I can't afford to do that in front of 100 ladies.
