Quick check in... First a confession - Now that I've reached my weight loss goal and finished the century - I've been eating like absolute $hit.  I haven't eaten this poorly since Halloween of last year.  Just this morning, I ate an entire container of tapioca pudding AFTER eating my oatmeal...  After 8 months of eating like Richard Simmons - I wonder if my body and brain have basically said F this - where's the ice cream!!!  I'm gonna give myself the rest of the week to eat whatever I want with the idea that it will be much easier to get back into the groove once school starts next week.  We might need another bet to get down to my goal weight...

Sounds like me.  I stepped on the scale at 189.5 this morning.  One week of "what happens in Long Beach WA, stays in Long beach WA" was enough to put me over the top.Smile

On a totally separate page - I'm giving serious consideration to doing a HIM in October.  Rev 3 is holding one in MD in October and if all the stars line up - I might sign up for it.  The bike section is in the bag - I wonder if I could be ready for the run and swim considering I haven't done either since mid july when I did my OLY.  Thoughts?

When in October?  Might be a cool swim if it's towards the middle to end.  I think the swim training would be easier than the run training.  Would this replace your HM race already scheduled, or would you do both?  Where will you start as far as your long run distance to give an idea of how far you would be building in that amount of time?

October 7 is the date... I'm not worried about the temp of the swim.  They have a video from last years race and it looks like everyone is in a wetsuit - plus it's Maryland where they have baked all summer.  I agree that the run will be the hard part - but I think I could make it happen if I adjusted my goals.  During my Oly - I went all out... (and avoided a six pack of warm coors) but there would be nothing to stop me from using the Galloway method and taking walking breaks along the way.

The training question in regards to the run is a good one.  I figure I have 5 1/2 weeks of training and 2 weeks of taper. What are your thoughts on this schedule.

Week 1 - 5
Week 2 - 7
Week 3 - 9
Week 4 - 6 (I think with the huge increase in training volume - I will definitely need a rest week or I would risk injury
Week 5 - 11
Week 6 - 14 (Fatigue on the run will be the toughest part of the race so going "the extra mile" would give me a boost of confidence that I could handle the run)
Taper Week 1 - 6
Taper Week 2 - Race

Finally - there is a month between the HIM and the HM.  So I would do both.

Thoughts?

That looks good.  I might suggest going 9 or 10 off of the recovery week during the long run on week 5.  It all depends on how your body feels (risk of injury).  Also manage and moderate your intensity levels based on YOUR body, if the plan has you going too light/heavy.

I think as to the time between both events, make one of them the A race, and one the B.  If you go hard during the HIM, then expect fatigue to play into the HM.  If you go at threshold or below on the HIM, then expect to perform a little better on the HM.

My only experience with this was last year, I ran Windermere marathon with bro in law.  It was his first marathon, so I thought I treated it as a fun run/final prep for my A race marathon 3 weeks later.  The result was brutal.  I had the 3:30 goal still for the 2nd marathon, and could only muster a 3:57.  Lesson learned, I need a longer layoff between long efforts than 3 weeks.

Lofty goals David, and I wish you well on meeting and exceeding them.  Make sure you post your A race, and we should be able to help you in setting a threshold at which you need to "shotgun warm coors in the parking lot after the race" for you.Laughing

Welll, my son shamed me into signing up for a race on Sunday...he is doing a KOS race saturday. He hurt his back playing hockey Tuesday. Asked him if he still wanted to race...of course dad, why wouldn't I? "how about you dad?" Of course son, why wouldn't I? So I signed up today for sprint....debating whether or not to wear a wetsuit...average water temp they say is around 68...hopefully under 13minutes in the water. it would make the long run through the sand to the transition much easier.

Also Melissa, I see they changed the bike route. It is way nicer as most of it is on new pavement on the north miquelon lake road. Last time I was camping there, I rode it.

I guess I should try out the new tri shoes before the race...

I like your son... He sound like a tough little guy...

I just checked out KOS - what a cool program.  Just more proof that Canada is better than the states...

Listen to your body on Sunday.  Walk when you need to... Have fun.... and enjoy those new wide bike shoes...

OK - I've spent the last three days weighing the pros and cons of doing a HIM vs. an OLY... I need to pull the trigger.  I'm gonna sign up for the HIM with the goal of finishing...  I love a challenge and the bigger the task, the harder I will push myself.  I've already done an OLY and I know I can do it.  Now, I need to push myself a step further...  Plus, I can't lose.  If I come up short, I can always switch to the OLY.  I figure $80 bucks is a cheap price to pay for a little self discovery.

Thanks in advance for the support...

Good luck to everyone in their race/recovery....

Crap - I still can't sleep... I would imagine that I'll be sleeping better once I start training for the HIM... Until then - I can troll the forums to find things like this... helmets that deploy when you have an accident...

http://blog.oregonlive.com/commuting/2012/08/portland_bicyclists_can_now_bu.html

My take - I think its a little silly but if it means that someone's mellon is covered - then I'm all for it...

First off, great job on signing up for HIM. That is  a huge step up. If you train with the consistency that you have previously, you should be a-okay! Tough but doable! $80 is cheap like borscht. I just paid $162 for a friggin' sprint and my son's KOS race.

Speaking of KOS,yes it is a great idea for us canadians, we also have warts like our brutally expensive beer! I guess I am just paying for our health care. Sin taxes, smoking and drinking! I can live with that.

Will be out of cell service  this weekend so will report back monday!

Darren enjoy the fresh fruit, great wine, great beer and great weather in the Okanagan!

Kevin, get your damn leg checked out! No, whiskey is not a medicine!

David, stop filling your face with unhealthy food and drink...starting monday!(beer in moderation is NOT unhealthy!)

Have a great weekend everyone!

BigDH - 2012-08-14 9:30 PM Regarding the weight loss thing. Qua already got his 20 , or at least it is in the main. Kevin, I figure we r even. That leaves thor, so pm me ur Adress. Speaking of beer, I am in the kelowna, wine country. But tree brewing has their shop here and they got these 500 ml cans for 2 bucks. Anyways, things r good. Taper is good. Mother it is hot here. Holidaying with a 1 and 3 year old is harder than any endurance event invented.

One of these days, I will be in Calgary and I will collect then...at a pub with lots of taps preferably!

How long are you in Kelowna for? If you are up in Penticton try the Cannery brewing. They have some nice IPA's. Check the liquor store for the Phillips brewing(victoria brewing company) hop pack(dozen bottles) a green box!

I'll be holding you to that.

I wish it was 80 bucks.  The cost of the HIM is $220.  It's an $80 difference between the OLY and HIM.  However - the swag is pretty incredible: medal, finisher t-shirt, Blueseventy goggles, a visor, and an 8x10 photo...

Believe it or not - I'm actually getting sick of eating crap... I grabbed some cookies of the shelf this afternoon and ended up putting them back... I think my body is trying to tell me something. Laughing  That's not gonna stop me from heading to my favorite burrito place on Sunday for a burrito they call the home wrecker - "20 oz of pure love".

Have a great weekend everyone!

Good Luck on Saturday!

This is Crazy, but while I still have health care on last years plan (not a true slam of the current health care situation as it exhists today in the US), I decided to visit the doctor about my leg.  To do this I had to:

  • get off the couch, and look up the # to my HMO (local Group Death Health)
  • talk for an extremely long time to a strange woman on the phone about my knee, and what race and ethnicity I was (awkward)
  • Follow through on going in to see the doctor today after going in to work for the first time since the school year ended for 4 hours of interviewing candidates for a position in our behavior program.

The prognosis:  rest for 10 days and try to workout lightly on the bike after 10 day rest.  Also at this time I may use an eliptical machine, rowing machine, spin bike (with no resistance), and or swim.  (which one do you think I'm going to do a lot of?)

They feel like I should be back to normal in 3 weeks after the 10 day rest.  So, I am going to try to take it easy, push back my training cycle to start in 4 weeks as I ease back into tri type intensity workouts.

I am also going to develop a new zero resistance spin bike/eliptical machine epic brick workout for triathlete's with soreness behind knee.  It's going to be epic!

Improve upon my weak swim with consistent (3x per week) swim workouts.

Congrats to you David on HIM journey, pulling the trigger is a huge step.

Thor-  I applaud you for signing up in spite of injury.  DON'T hurt it more by going all Rocky Balboa on us.

Darren-When's your next Ultra event, and what is it?

However, I'm watching the Browns play the Green Bay Packers and the Browns are winning 32-10.  Yes the Browns.  So anything is possible.Laughing

I hopped on the scale today to discover that in the last two weeks I have gone from 178.8 to 186.  Time to get my a$$ back in gear.  Swim today.  Ride tomorrow.  Time to start counting calories again...

Being from the NW, I used to root for the SeaHawks, but they broke my heart in 1984 when they did not go to the Super bowl when they lost the AFC championship game  (I was 7).  So I started rooting for the Redskins in 1987, the year Doug Williams started the 2nd half of a Super Bowl that they were down 10-0 at half to the Denver Broncos (Being an ex Seahawk fan, I hated Elway's Buck teathed grimmace/smile; I was 10.)  In the 2nd half, we put up 45 unnanswered points on Denver and routed them 45-10.  I watched the Redskins win 2 more superbowls behind the counter tre of Joe Gibbs, and have rooted for them ever since (they're pretty terrible in many recent years, just a step above the Cleaveland Browns, who used to be watchable when they had Bernie Kosar so many years ago!Wink

So what the hell is wrong? Did they at least give you that? I freakin' hate going to the doctor, it is a time killer even though I don't have to pay anything for it or the tests(blood, xrays etc.)

I'm on day 3 of sitting on the shelf.  No, they told me it had to be muscular, (no ligament or tendon damage) and that I just had to rest and NOT do anything to re-aggravate the muscle.  So, Here I sit.  It hasn't really gotten any better yet, but I'm hoping at the end of 10 days, I can slowly start lightly jogging and spinning on a spin bike again w/o aggravating it.

Glad I didn't do anything stupid and enter the Oly. I think I would have died. Amazing the drop in fitness after just about 6 weeks of no training. Foot bothered me marginally, but didn't cause the slow times.

Swim was a brutal weed infested swim. Went with no wetsuit. Little chilly, I think water temps in the mid 60's if i had to guess.

Bike was okay but I could have/should have kicked it up a notch.(Love the new tri bike shoes, went barefoot and cut alot of time off transition)

Run...brutal hilly trail run. Damn near killed me. Had about 5-6 gazelles pass me and they were doing the Oly. Speedy little bastards!Smile(pardon the language!)

An okay result all things considered. Unless i pull a rabbit out of the hat and i do one in Phoenix in November, race season is over. Now to improve my run and bike while at least swimming once and awhile so i don't start from scratch next spring!

BigDH - 2012-08-20 8:19 AM so I survived the 50 miler on Saturday. 14 hours 15 minutes. 3500 meters of elevation. Brutal.

Does it make you want to go longer?  That is most impressive.  That's awsome.  Seriously, how does one do 50, let alone 100?

Yeah, I don't know. Bit worried about the 100. Felt okay at the finish but man, to turn around and do the thing again was not something I would like to do.

It was out in Kananskis. Smoking hot, 28C, so it was a gooder. Lots of water.
