I NEED TO RUN FASTER! Today we went on a 20 mile bike ride and decided to do some speed work on the local high school track.  Good workout for a Sunday after riding 26 miles yesterday.

I hope Jamie and Nate had a great race this morning. Can't wait to see the improvements. I need a vacation ....

Looking forward to hearing from the racers!

Rene, hope that clears up soon.  Sounds pretty nasty.  Glad you went to a doctor.  I had some kind of a rash / infection / bite on my leg a couple of years ago that sounds similar.  Stumped the doctors, but they had two diagnosis.  Gave me two sets of pills as I headed overseas... it got worse for a couple of days before I opted for the 2nd set of pills and eventually it cleared up.

Michael, glad to hear you're back up and going (as if anything ever keeps you down for long) and that you like your new doctor.

Randy, congrats on getting one off to college.  1 to go!

Did a 10 mile run this morning on one of my favorite routes in Ann Arbor.  I'm still slow, and still many miles behind where I should be according to my marathon plan.  But, I've strung together 3 solid training weeks for the first time in many months, so that is an accomplishment.  Probably won't make it 4 with this week's schedule, but my body is kind of saying "rest".

Loved Meb's performance in this morning's marathon!  Inspiring back story on him (and his family) as well as the runner from South Sudan.  Anyway, great to see the "old guy" do so well :-)  He really had a great race, moving up from 15th to 4th (or something along those lines).

Have a great day, everyone!  - Stu

Stu-good run.  It was just a little cooler here this morning when I started my ride and it helped.

Hope everyone is having a good Sunday....where did the weekend go!

Just got up from a 2 hour post race nap! I've entered my race report and here's a quick summary:

What a great race. I had a month to prepare and I think I did rather well.  Didn't feel dead or burnt out at any point in the race and I finished strong. Below are my highlights.

I haven't done an open water swim yet so I can't make a good comparison, but trying to pass people in the pool is sort of a pain in the butt.

I still feel uncomfortable fiddling for my water bottle or Gel while I'm on the bike, but timing wise, this is the best time to ingest either.

They didn't put me in my group I tried signing up for. I entered as an age grouper, but I guess they saw that I raced as Clyde last time, so they entered me as a Clyde again. I weighed in at around 200lbs last night before bed (big dinner), so I don't feel too badly that I placed 2nd out of the Clydes, but I sure wasn't 200lbs after the race. Next race with this company I will most likely need to talk to someone in person to get them to put me in the right division. By my calculations, I should be 188lbs for my next race. Still kinda neat that I got to podium

Can't wait until next time!

-Nate

And here's my Race Report from today's race. I did really well considering my expectations, and while I'm probably still 15-20 minutes from ever touching a podium, I'll take these times! I'm a little suspicious of them, as I've worked hard in training and like to see it pay off, but I think that maybe the courses were a tad short. I really wanted to break 26' on the run, and got 24'24", which I'm really happy with. Even better, I feel great. If I were crazy, I could probably train tonight, but I *probably* won't

Nice racing, guys!  The issue you report in race reports are just experience.  Just keep doing what you are doing.  Your training is solid.  Stuff like fiddling with water bottles and passing people in the pool gets easier with experience.

Rene -- so sorry to hear about your issues.  I hope the info you've got gets you in the clear.  I've been thinking a whole lot about what happens to us as we age, lately.  I guess success involves finding the right middle ground between acknowledging the limitations of what happens to us as we age and resisting the temptation to give in to the desire for the easy, less painful, way.  Like you, I tend to err on the latter side.  Sometimes we need to give a little to the former.  Go for it, take risks, push yourself, etc., but when it isn't going right, back off a little so you can try again.

I had a great training weekend.  I'm not irrationally optimistic, but I hope it's a sign of things to come.

Arm update: Area is still slightly swollen. When I woke up this morning the redness and heat were gone. Went for a 3.75 mile run this morning to see if it would make things worse. So far the antibiotics seem to be taking care of the problem.

Michael, yes I tend to err on the side of caution. Take a day off now or take 6 weeks off later when the problem/injury is still there.

Jamie and Nate - Congratulations!  Enjoyed the Race Reports!

Rene - happy to hear the elbow is getting better.

I had a very minimal weekend of training.  It's what I get for the lifestyle I chose.  No regrets, I love what I do, just wish there were more hours in the day.

Jamie and Nate: Nice job on your results.  Good race reports.

Rene: Hope your elbow is on the mend. Sounds like you've got a handle on it.

Michael: I relate to your comments about aging. I am still determined not to concede any ground -- at least not until my mental age finishes adolescence :-)

I have the West Point triathlon coming up this weekend.  It's a really nice sprint event with a long (for me) swim at 800 meters.  Hoping for sun!!!

I also signed up for another tri in Sept.  A nice local race with a short 1/4 mile swim. Partly because my brother-in-law asked me.  Oddly, thinking about doing this weekend's tri, and being in that atmosphere, also inspired me. You guys get some of the credit too.  I'm impressed by how well everyone is doing.

Talking about a MASH unit ... I went to bed last night with a runny nose. Woke up feeling alright and went to play 90 minutes of racquetball. Now I am feeling like crap ... left work early .... headache, runny nose, body ache, fever you name it ...

Time to take some nyquil and sleep it off ...

Just got in 40 minutes of running, which felt ok. School is starting, so it's time to go back to school this week *sigh*, which means tomorrow I'm trying my first early morning swim before work, followed by a bike ride after. Let's see how my commitment holds up, good thing I already paid for my race in October!

Michael, are you feeling better? Hopefully you had a 24 hour bug.

I had a great bike workout today. Actually I'm pretty pleased with how well the workout went. Maybe taking it easy for a few days to let my arm recover wasn't such a bad thing after all. There is a fairly nasty run workout on my schedule for tomorrow. One of those workouts where you want to write your coach and ask if he made a mistake. lol..

I actually like the routine when school starts back up. Notice that I like the routine not school not school itself. Ironman training normally kicks in about the same time that school starts. So I've learned over the years ways to make it easier to get everything done.

The key to making everything fit is to have a plan. Know your weekly workout plan and post it up in the house. Lay your clothes out the night before for the morning workout. Pack your car the night before with your workout gear. Everything that is needed for the workout is there are ready to go. I even go ahead and put my water bottles on the bike the night before. Keep a weeks worth of towels in your car or pool locker. I even keep extra clothes in the car just in case I forget something.
I tend to be a bit OCD when it comes to organization during work and Ironman training. If you haven't figured that out by now. Everything is on a schedule. We have 3 weekly menus with grocery lists that rotate. On Sunday nights, I cook most of our meals for the week and pack lunches. I buy double basic household items at the store. There is enough underwear and socks for everyone in the house to go two weeks without doing laundry. People don't seem to complain as much about the laundry when they have clean undies! I've hang wet workout clothes up to dry before putting them in the hamper. Then the laundry isn't quite as nasty.

And the #1 KEY is to get enough rest. Stay off the internet and away from the TV. I have to be in the bed at 9 to get up at 4:30-4:45 to start my workout. Hubby knows that I'm really tired the first 2-3 weeks of school. For the last 2 years he's scheduled business trips out of the state and country during those weeks.

How do you manage to be in bed by 9PM?  I find that to be the hardest (obviously, as it's just after 10 now :-).

Your system is impressive.  I also find that when I am organized the night before things go more smoothly and I'm less likely to skip a workout.

I'm also still awake! But once work starts back up it will be back to bed at 9. First off both of our kids are grown up. When I first started going to bed at nine the goal was to just be in bed. My coach told me he didn't care what I was doing as long as I was in bed with my feet up. So I would read or catch up on paper work- no computer, or TV. As training progresses it is hard to stay awake much later than nine anyway. I can sleep with the TV and lights on. My husband can watch TV in the bedroom without it bothering me. I'm really strict about the 9 PM bedtime during the months of Sept, Oct, November during heavy IM training.

Like everything else going to bed early is just a habit. Once you see the benefits it is hard not to go to bed early. Try it! You'll like it!

I have a terribly inconsistant sleeping schedule.  It is definitely one of my limiters.  When I was in grad school, I slept roughly  4:00am-7:00am and again 6:00pm-9:00pm, but then again some days I'd instead sleep 1:00am-7:00am and still others get less than 5 hours/day.  It stayed the same when I got married, until we had children, and of course that changed everything.

I'm still not good at sleep.  I try to get to sleep by 9pm each night, but sometimes (like now!) it can still get on towards midnight.

Michael: So good to hear your positivity after your health issues.

Rene: So in awe of your determination. I need to find it within myself! I have found that if I get myself in bed by 8pm, even if I don't fall asleep till after 10, I feel so good the next day. I've been making that a habit while the husband's been gone. Sometimes it doesn't happen, but it's the goal.

Last week was rough. So many changes in our family happening. I let the overwhelming feelings get to me and I shut down. Back at it this week though after getting everything ready for the kids' new school year. The biggest deal is it's my son's 1st year in middle school. We're from the tougher side of town, so I'm been worried about his safety. The school staff gave me a lot to have faith in at his orientation, so now I can focus on me again.

Awesome job with all the training going on!
