Pro 4100 Wherever the trail takes me, WA. | Subject: RE: swbkrun's group - FULL Alright, so I got a new Headlamp.... IT ROCKS!!! ALMOST TOO GOOD! I was running this morning, and this light basically lights up the sky enough to where planes were telling me to TURN OFF MY HIGH BEAMS!! The problem with that is when you are trail running it pays to look DOWN not ahead (and I was looking too far ahead! WAY TOO FAR)!!!! Any who.... I took a header! Tripped right over a log and went rolling!! It was actually pretty dang funny and the group I was with was belly laughing!!! I then switched modes on the lamp from "SPOT" to "FLOOD" and that was MUCH BETTER!! Highly recommend this light!! It is worth the cash!!!

Expert 1231 B'ham | Subject: RE: swbkrun's group - FULL I bought a Petzl - TikkaPlus ($35 REI) and did my first run with it last night. No issues w/ planes, but it was sufficient and comfortable. Very different from mt biking at night, everything seems VERY slow. Last night was also the virgin run for my new trail shoes and I have to say I like them a lot.

Steve maybe you should stop at the hospital for one of those "advanced" emergency first aid kits. That or only run down the landing strips at airports if you use the spot beams. I did see a bright light in the sky to the west last night. Maybe that was you. |

Master 2436 Apex, north carolina | Subject: RE: swbkrun's group - FULL Hey guys, I have to admit I am having a hard time getting myself out to train. With it getting dark so early, the kids' schedules, and it was 30 degrees this morning..... I know it is a lot of excuses but I am also honest with myself: I DON'T DO COLD WELL and I don't get up extra early to work out. Winter training is rough on me. I think I will join the Masters swim group in November. I'll go to the free class and check it out. Plus I found a 1/2 marathon for March 1st that I'll sign up for - that will give me a reason to train. And I think I'll head over to REI at lunch and check out those headlights you guys are talking about. (Wait a minute, I'm a girl. Don't I come equipped with headlights already?) Otherwise I'm not doing too good here. Sorry to ramble on. How do you guys with kids do it? Between homework, dinner, dance, gymnastics and the husband's hockey I seem to be falling through the cracks!! Maybe Billy Blanks and Tae-bo need to get reacquainted.

Master 1952 Guelph, Ontario | Subject: RE: swbkrun's group - FULL I know what you mean Tracy. It is hard to get out of the house on cold mornings. It's even harder to get out when you don't have to. With having signed up for the HIM for 2009 I have that in the back of my mind and know I have to keep training. Also the people at the club are so used to seeing me that they give my a rough time when I don't show up for a few days. I don't think there is anything wrong with a little break/slowdown but try not to let it go completely. Even getting in short workouts will allow your body to stay in shape. (not that you're not in shape. I mean... well.. headlights and all. I know, I know, shut up Rob. I'm just digging a deep hole. ) The body has an amazing ability to remember the training you were doing and to get back to that level in no time. Plus you have the advantage of kniwoing that you can do this already. Keep in mind this is a sport and family comes first. |

Pro 4100 Wherever the trail takes me, WA. | Subject: RE: swbkrun's group - FULL Alright time for me to chime in about motivating yourself.... Easy for me I don't have any kids right! Well I am going to say it anyway.....
Please try it! Get your out of bed on a 30 degree morning, bundle up, grab a flash light, and hit the road... Even for 30 minutes... When you get home you are going to tell yourself that your a frickin' stud... How many other people did what you did this morning! There is a present good sense of accomplishment when you are done! It is actually more enjoyable than rather at night... Running at night just makes me feel like I am running because I HAVE TO GET A WORKOUT IN! Running in the morning... I got up, got dress, and hit the road because I WANT TO GET THE WORKOUT IN!!!
One little hint.... Put the coffee on before you leave! There is nothing better than coming home and grabbing a hot cup of coffee 1st thing!
That's my .02! Please give it a try! 30 degree's is cold no doubt... But that adds to the adventure, and sense of accomplishment is MUCH GREATER! TRUST ME! |

Expert 1231 B'ham | Subject: RE: swbkrun's group - FULL It's always hard for me at first when the seasons change too. I feel like this year is going to be easier because I've made some new friends here at work that like run/tri. In fact, I was told our trail run Saturday was going off rain or not rain (there is no 'shine' here until April). I guess I'm saying that finding a group is a big help. Plus, when you work out in the cold, it confirms for your friends who thought you were crazy for doing tris that they were right . Really, it's only cold at first and then you warm up and you don't really notice. Winter is also a good time to mix it up. I've been going to a Sport Circuit class at my gym and I love it. Find a spin class or a bootcamp or something to add to your routine. From the family perspective, the most important thing is to talk about it with them. Let your husband know that he's got his hockey time and you need your time too. But talk about it now, rather than letting it eat at you. Everyone gets in a little funk every now and then, you'll come through and be just fine. After all, you are a Savage Woman!! |

Champion 9060 Charlottesville, Virginia | Subject: RE: swbkrun's group - FULL Steve do you use the drag factor much on your computrainer? I can buy the upgrade chip for 50 bucks and from what I have read that is the only thing I don't have on mine. Still don't have my cables but I rode it in stand alone mode, did the easiest 10 mile route last night, even that was nice because it made me have to shift when the grade went up or down.

I DO NOT use the drag factor... For no particular reason. I think the computrainer itself has enough GREAT features that I don't feel it is necessary to spend the extra $.... We did invest in the "NEW 3D software" which is pretty badass, but that is about it! There are PLENTY OF HILLS OUT THERE, and Plenty of flat TT courses. You can also download some off the internet as well.... ENJOY! I spend a lot of time biking parts of the Ironman Canada course in preperation this year.... There is also a 21.4 mile course that I loved... I will have to go back and look at old workouts to see if I can remember the name....
FOUND IT.... It's called "CHRIS WINTER RIDE!!!!" It is a great course with 1 hill.... Just a good way to knock out 21 miles in 1:05-1:10.... Maybe 2 hours for me know... It has been a while! Edited by swbkrun 2008-10-31 10:20 AM |
