Offthegrid - 2008-10-20 11:18 PM I tried doing a flip turn and nearly drowned. Never could do flip turns. My goal is by my tri in June that I want to be regularly doing flip turns. I think I just need more time in the water. I get out of breath when trying to do a turn.

I swim in a squad and I can't do flip turns. But then again I do swim in the slow, retard -swimmer lane!!! LOL

Heh!  If I were on a swim team, I'd be right there with you in the slow lane!  I need to figure out how to be a speedy swimmer!

Slugger - 2008-10-21 2:23 PM Oh, speaking of pumpkins this time, we tried something new this fall: sweet canned/pickled pumpkin. It is really pretty, kind of a yellow with a tint of orange. It has sugar and cinnamon. I'm thinking of doing a chutney with some of it, like a sweet mango chutney, maybe over pork loins or roast. I also think it would make a fabulous fruity bread, maybe a hearty white with the chunks of pumpkin folded in. Or maybe something like cinnamon raisin bread with the pumpkin chunks instead of raisins. I'll let you know how it goes!

Wow, you americans sure know how to do a lot of things with pumpkin! I normally just roast it or make it into soup. Looks like I am way behind the 8 ball! All those things sound really yummy. Its just so damn hard to peel!!!

I make yummy pumpkin squares with homemade cream cheese frosting.  I also make pumpkin soup and, not surprisingly, it has rum in it.  I also cheat and use canned pumpkin...

eurydice79 - 2008-10-19 12:16 AM Actually I've been meaning to make some pumpkin pie - I know in America its really popular. At our local supermarket they've started stocking canned pumpkin filling for a pie, and its sitting in my cupboard ready for me to use it. One of these days I'll make one
We have pumpkin everything here for Halloween. Ice cream, coffee, cheesecake, anything you can imagine. I LOVE PUMPKIN PIE!!! Seriously. It's so good. Being gluten-free, though, I now make it without a crust. I just make it the normal way, and it is easy to slice it up and eat it. Yum, yum, yum.

Pumpkin COFFEE???? How on earth do you make that???

A little pumpkin spice flavored syrup courtesy of Starbucks, mayhaps?  I don't make my own pumpkin coffee but I can tell you that pumpkin spice lattes at Starbucks taste pretty yummy .

Ahhh - Starbucks. Sadly I don't have Starbucks in little old Perth. Which is probably actually a good thing, me being the biggest coffee addict on the planet

I'm right there with you.  Hi, my name is Erica and I am addicted to coffee.  My morning is not complete without my coffee in my hand.  I love it and must have it!

Tomorrow is parent/teacher conferences and I'm thinking I'll bring Starbucks to butter up the teachers!  I think the Pumpkin Spice Latte is in order.  With Nonfat milk of course!

Exactly!!  YOu can really justify anything there with nonfat milk.  I love peppermint mochas, too, Slugger.  "grande nonfat peppermint mocha... with whipped, please"... they then always clarify... "did you say you want the whipped?"  Ummmm, yes, yes I did.  I can justify it because I got nonfat milk... DUH.

Offthegrid - 2008-10-20 9:18 AM I tried doing a flip turn and nearly drowned. Never could do flip turns. My goal is by my tri in June that I want to be regularly doing flip turns. I think I just need more time in the water. I get out of breath when trying to do a turn.

Just remember to tuck your chin to your chest and breathe out your nose so you don't get water all up in your brain!!!   Took me forever to get it and I still miss the wall every now and then.  I just have to laugh at myself!

I think the problem is that when I go into the flipturn, I'm so afraid of getting water up my nose that I exhale ALL the air I have. And then when I finish the flip turn, I have no air and have an instinct to breathe in, and THEN I get water up my nose. But I will keep trying!

in response to the cabana boy offering suggestions of things to mix with your chi tea I recommend...

amaretto or
cinnamon schnapps or
kahalua or
you could also take any one of these and splash a little chocolate liquor
oh... maybe a splash of grand mariner
as far as whiskey or scotch goes I would choose a nice smooth scotch that has been aged a little while.

those are just my suggestions

No pumpkin anything for me....but I'll definitely take the Kahlua, Bailey's or Spiced Rum!!!

I had a dog in college named Kahlua!!!  Then, I briefly had a dog named Bailey....but, she had to go back due to heart problems.  <img align='middle' src='https://beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/images/emoticons/frown.gif'> So, we didn't want to use that name again.  Our current dogs (2 golden retrievers) are named after sports people...Kobe and Reggie!

I might have the same issues!!!

Exhale all the way through the turn through your nose sort of forcefully but slow and controlled. then the water wont get in. I can do flip turns but I never get myswimming fitness to a level where I feel comfortable doing. Maybe i need to HTFU. There's just no walls in the sea so don't feel the need to push it.
