Expert![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Thanks everyone. I have pretty mixed feelings about the race. On one hand it would have been awesome to BQ at the race, but I knew it was going to be pushing the absolute limit on my ability. I had decided to push as hard as I could and see what would happen because I'd kick myself if I finished with fuel left and didn't BQ, always wondering 'what-if'. On the other hand I really can be disappointed at all with the performance. As you guys saw, I was really moving during that first half. Set a new half marathon PR in that first half by about 4 minutes. Also posted a 20:15 5k time based on the garmin somewhere around miles 6-9, which is my best 5k since high school. I realized the half mary time was WAY too fast though considering I was aiming for nearly 2 minutes slower at that point. So I backed the pace off and tried to let myself recover, knowing I had banked a lot of time and didn't need to maintain 7:15s, I tried to back it off to 7:25-7:30s, but by mile 20 I knew I was in for it. The pace at mile 20 would have been enough if I could maintain it, I had dropped off to around 8:00 pace, which would be just fast enough to BQ if I could hold it, but then around mile 22 I died. All of the sudden I find myself doing 10:30s and 'pushing hard' barely took me to 10:15s. Sometime around the 23mile mark I calculated that I'd need to do around a 19minute 5k in order to BQ. I was hitting an 11:30 pace by then... there was no way in heck I was going to be able to drop to the 6:00 pace that would be required. At that point I knew it was over, I had been in survival mode for a while at that point and just put my head down, took one step at a time and vowed to just keep on moving forward. My exposer to the ultra community kind of helped out with this, where I kept telling myself I'm still not as bad off as I was during mile 45 of my ultra. Head down, one off in front of the other and just keep going. Managed to get myself back towards a 10:45 pace. I still managed to set a mary PR, but I'm basically a waddling useless heap right now. Thanks again for the support. I'm surprisingly very happy with my performance and think I've learned some things about what to work on and maybe what IMAZ will feel like towards the end. |

You did great! I don't blame you for trying and the fact that you made it that deep in the race with a shot of reaching your goal means you are close! Plus now you will know for the next time! BTW, I was in SD for the day yesterday! Nice to see all the finishers wandering around Seaport Village! We snuck down there to get away from the heat a bit! |

Pro![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() PennState - 2010-06-07 10:51 AM I think the next discussion we should have is about pacing longer events. There are some neat calculators and also some real world things that can help pacing marathons, and HIM and beyond triathlons. Sound like a good discussion? I think this is a good discussion point! I will have to listen as I have yet to do it right! |

Expert![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() The longest distance I'm planning on running will be the 1/2 marathon in my 1/2 IM in Oct. I'm thinking of doing the 1/2 again at PF Changs AZ in Jan-Feb with my wife. No speed, just finishing with her. I know that working out with my wife slows me down some days but I love that we get to spend time together. |

Master![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I used to be really good at pacing during my 1st career of running, I think now I just don't have enough long runs in me to really know. |

Master![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I will be in Newport Beach for training for the next few weeks and may not be on too much, actually I'll probably be on more since its just me! I'm not bringing my bike down the first week; I tweaked my calf during a ride and I'd be too tempted to ride hard down there; I have a really really hard time taking it easy on rides even when my body tells me to. Just going to swim. I may hit up some swim lessons when I'm down there, there are some world class coaches in that area and no one where I'm at. |

High School and the Marine Corps; 15-26 yrs old. Back then I would run quite a bit (50 mpw?) and not really hurt myself. I took 7 years off and have been running the past 5 years. |

Extreme Veteran![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hi all - just popping in here real quick before bed. I won't be around the rest of the week - heading to DC for a conference for work. I got my schedule for while I am there and it looks like I'll be working basically non-stop from 7am-8pm each day. Will make for a challenging week from a training perspective. I've never been to DC so I'm planning a run around all the touristy sights really early Wednesday morning and I figure I can train AND sightsee at the same time. ![]() Have a good week training everyone! |

Expert![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() PennState - 2010-06-08 10:44 AM Anyone have any thoughts on pacing or any other topics you want to discuss? Well, I always say that I have one pace (when it comes to running at least) so I don't have much to add there. I am curious if anyone has used the saltstick or endurolyte and what they thought of them. One person told me that they can aggravate your stomech. Do you think that they really work? I know nothing about them except that they are basically salt and maybe some other ingrediants and that they help with hydration( I assume that is what they are). |

Master![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() PennState - 2010-06-08 12:44 PM Anyone have any thoughts on pacing or any other topics you want to discuss? I don't have time for a full treatise on pacing (although I have lots of thoughts) right now, but I will say this: I think many times people err too much on the side of caution and don't go out fast enough. A race should hurt, if you're really racing, by the end. And many people are surprised to learn just how long you can make it hurt and still keep going if you are mentally tough enough. I was reluctant to post that because I think the danger of going out too easy is pretty low in long course tri... however I do think that regardless of how well your pacing has gone, there are a lot of people walking who are not but could, if they just wanted to badly enough, be running. Just look at how many people sprint the last 1/4 mile after walking the previous 6. One of my goals for LP is to not stop running, no matter what. |

I agree Josh and it is one of the things I am trying to focus on this year is actually "racing" my races. Now that may not mean competing at the top of my AG, but finishing the races spent, having left every thing on the course. The challenge is knowing what pace that is. But if I have trained properly and done the work, the data should be there to give me that answer. |

Expert![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I've found that with running, my mind gives me 12 different reasons to stop running in the first mile but I just need to keep running. All of those feelings goes away and I can just continue. I need to get mentally tough again at about mile 2.5 - 3 where my mind starts to convince me to walk again. I think the mental has been as tough as the physical so far. I have no experience with anything over 6 miles right now so I'll see how I do with the 1/2 IM training runs. My HR has been in the 140's to 150's lately on the runs and that has been easily doable. |

Pro![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() PennState - 2010-06-08 8:12 PM OK, got my last hard ride (although it was more Z3 than really hard) in before Eagleman 70.3 this weekend. Anyone else training today? An 80 minutes of varied cadence on the trainer this morning and some strength training and a short swim tonight! Speaking of strength training, there is a topic that can bring out some strong opinions on both sides! I do it because I like to, as the swim/bike/run volume increases, it is usually the first to go, except the core work. Does it help? I don't know, but I like to think so! |

Expert![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Getting ready to hit the gym with the wife. I tried to go running outside last night at 10pm but it was still 102 degrees. Decided to take it as a rest day but and going to do an hour and a half at the gym. Probably 45 min of stationary bike and 45 min of running. I know I have to get up early to get my workouts in outside but I just need to get my up. Someone had asked about salt tabs today and I was wondering what I need to start to think about as far as nutrition on my 1/2 IM. I'm guessing that I'll do a GU 15 min before the swim and then 200-300 cal an hour from then on from the bike to the run. I'm guessing gels will be fine on the bike and then calories from liquids on the run. But where and why do the salt tabs come in? I had a friend do IM SG and she taped her nutrition schedule on the diagonal tube of her bike so she could read it as she road. I'm guessing that helps reinforce your nutrition plan and I might do that also. |
