uhcoog - 2011-03-10 10:51 AM Pain free run yesterday.  Actually the knee popped once during the cool down and there was a shooting pain but it subsided.  Felt awesome this morning when I woke up so I decided to take the bike out for a spin on the way to the Y.  Very encouraged.  This is my first back to back days of real s/b/r work in a month.  I had been using pull days in the pool as an "off day" for my legs.  Anyway Kemah here I come.  1st Oly tri in T minus 24 days.  Start is like the Escape from Alcatraz Tri in San Fran.  We'll be going off tour boats and swimming back to shore.

Hopefully the water will be warmer than San Francisco Bay.

That looks like a neat race.

No lie.  It's still mid 60s around here.  Making me worry a little.

Mid 60s water temp....?
If so, you'll be fine in your sleeveless wetsuit.

My friend upstate doesn't understand why I complain about 20's and 30's.  He's happy if the temps get out of the teens in the wintertime.

My first open-water swim was done with a small group on LI.  It was early april and a cold winter.  The sound was probably in the low fifties.  It was shockingly cold.  I was in for maybe 10 minutes and never put my face in the water.  It took a long time to warm up.

Hammer Products - my nutrition strategy research continues

Perpetium Solids:  For any of you interested, I have tried the NEW perpetium solids from hammer (their form of blocks).  They aren't bad and easy enough to get down. They are a little bigger than blocks and basically taste like a lightly flavored wafer.  You can get them in samples or a big jug.  The chew easy and basically turn to powder in your mouth and you wash it down.  (The perpetium drink is horrid and vial!!!)

Recoverite:  Have tried this.  It doesn't taste as bad as Heed or Perpetium, but a small amount of water and I can get it down.  So using this for now.

I am thinking perpetium solids on the bike with water and gatorade endurance (for extra sodium) and gels for the run!!

Does anyone else have emotional or mental issues close to a race when training miles are the highest?

I was excited about the race weeks ago, but now I find myself just trying to get mentally prepared for the long weekend mileage.  It can take me a few days to mentally prep myself.  Plus, I have a little shin splint on my right shin tryng to rear its head!!!

17 days left.

Thank you all for the swim advice.  I'll have to work on it more.

I wasn't able to train or check the site yesterday because I got the call that my sister was in labor.  I drove 6 hours and got to witness the birth of my beautiful new niece.  Her name is Grace Ellen, and she is perfect!!  I've always said that there is nothing more beautiful than bringing a life into this world.  Witnessing the bringing of life into this world is a close second!!!  My sister delivered in her living room, so I got to see a different side of labor and delivery.  Whew.  It was amazing!!!  Made me sad that I'm done having children......for just a second

every one of my races last year, I found that the morning of the race my knee would be screaming. I would be thinking of not racing, but once I was started I never though about the knee again and had no pain after. I began to wonder if I was subconciously giving myself a way out.

I tried the orange (which I generally prefer), but have strawberry too. I will try that one tomorrow.  The flavoring is very, very light.
