I'm usually headed for bed at 9pm as well.  May read a bit but almost always sleep by 9:30pm.  One-two mornings a week I will be up at 4:30am to get an early workout in.....this is usually dictated by what I have going on at work that day.  On most days I will be up at 5:15am....at work by 7am and workout at lunch and then again in the evening.  If time and commitments allow I will try to get in a short nap on Saturday afternoon

Have had to shift training around a bit this week due to bad weather moving through when I planned to run.  Swim today at lunch and hopefully a run tonight. Tomorrow is a rest day since I have a race on Saturday.

Keep at it folks!

Randy

Feeling a little better today but still not up to working out. Right now the Dayquil and Nyquil keep me going through the night and day.

Sorry to hear that you're still sick, Michael.  Get well soon!

No training yet for me today, but a trainer ride and run are on the books for later.

I set up a trainer area in my garage so I'd have more flexibility to train without disturbing others.  I put an old TV out there, some fans, and I bought the Roku device (which I had never heard of, but apparently it's popular).  It's pretty cool.   Anybody else use one?

d3/Michael-hope you get feeling better.  Maybe a little Nyquil and tonic tonight to make it festive.

Michael-have not used the Roku.  I just have a little $49 Dvd player on the work bench next to the bike that I use.  Entertainment does make the sessions go by faster.

Pool session done. Mid point of workout included 3 X 100 "FAST" on 4:00 (tha's alot of rest....or so I thought).  Didn't feel very smooth but was able to do the 100's @ 1:16/16/14.  By the time the last one rolled around I was dreading doing it. First time I've ever done a 100 (scy) in less than 1:15.  Glad it wasn't 105 yards as I was really thankful to finally hit the wall at the end! Pant/Pant/cough/Wheeze.

d3/Michael - That DayQuil/NyQuil stuff is great.  Massive doses of acetaminophen do wonders :-) Don't stress about not working out.  Give your body time to heal.

I had a good run yesterday with my 11-year-old son.  We did three miles on the track while my daughter was at her soccer conditioning for the high school team.  He talked the entire time while I huffed and puffed.  I don't think he's ever run that far but, he did great.

I'm at the point now where both of my children are faster than me. I will need to rely on cunning from now on :-)

Yes my son installed a ROKU on my TV in the garage to use while training. It is great! One drawback is that not all the shows allow subtitles as it is very hard to hear at times with the fans blowing. Other than that it is a great investment. Alternatively you could use headphones for better sound. Not only can you get Netflix, Hulu and crackle, you also can listen to music on Pandora. I have even watched many oldies including twilight zone, Adams family and the Munsters.

I downloaded a "Sufferfest" video today onto my Android phone and took it to the gym. Did a 60 minute workout and man did it kick my butt! Probably not as easy to pass the time to as a TV show or something, but I like the fact that it tells you what to do as you workout. I'll use these as my interval type workouts in the wintertime or when I just am not able to get out on the road.

Now, I'm off to visit some friends in Indiana. No biking or swimming while I'm there, so I'll have to make due by running!

Nate-I have a couple of those Sufferfest workouts downloaded...they can be brutal.  They have it set up now on www.trainerroad.com where they have sufferfest workouts.  Trainer Road  has tons of great workouts.  Still has a free trial I believe. Very cool.

Just got finished with a 90 min. ride, which, I believe, makes this my biggest training day yet when combined with my 45 min. swim this morning. I can definitely feel it, sleep will be easy tonight, I think!

I disassembled my office workout space, which also had an old amplifier surround sound that the previous homeowners left (because at one time it was the 'electronic entertainment area') .  So I put all that in the garage.  I can crank that baby up so loud that you could hear it over a jet engine.  Our garage is about 100 feet from our house, so it still doesn't disturb the family when I do that.

Nice swim times, Randy!  I know what you mean about 'could I have gone another 5 yards?'.  I had a similar experience in the pool yesterday.  (Main set 10x300.  I wasn't sure I was going to make the last one.)

1:14 is quick!  Be careful or you might become a FOP swimmer!

Wrapping up things in Michigan today.  Long day yesterday and today, but started the day with a 10K run with my BIL, which was a nice way to get the day started.  Home for a bit tomorrow before I head out with my daughter for the weekend (I think - still a little up in the air - her call).  We'll see what I can fit in, then back on track on Monday.

Randy, that is some kind of fast on the swimming!

Hang in there, Blanda :-)

Safe travels, Stu.

Trainer this morning.  Oh boy my legs are tired.  Because of truncated training, I'm not going to start tapering until 10 days out.  I'm looking forward to that.  Long ride on Saturday is gonna be tough...

Have a wonderful day everyone!

Question for today:  What motivates you to get the training done in the pool?

Based on the 2 locations you provided, I'm afraid to say where in Indiana...

Boiler Up, sir! West Lafayette I went to school and worked there for about 7 years total. I'm back visiting friends there and in Indianapolis this weekend. Also stopping by GenCon to fulfill my Nerdly Needs.

I've been to Bloomington a couple times and I agree it's a beautiful campus. Haven't been up to South Bend though.

Went on a run this morning and it was fantastic! Everything is so flat! The weather is so cool!!

Swim training.....what gets me in the pool?  It's on my schedule so I do it. Figure that I have a coach for a reason and that I need to do the workouts he provides.  I don't always enjoy the workouts and swimming is a way distant third among s/b/r in terms of what I enjoy. However, on those rare days when I feel really good in the water or exceed my expectations its a great feeling getting out of the pool.  Actually, its always a great feeling to get out of the pool.

Racing this weekend?  I'll be doing the Sandestin Sprint.  I think Mark is racing (hopefully without rain). Anyone else?

Checking in from Northern Michigan where the training has been going ok. Internet access is very spotty so I haven't been around too much.

I am racing this weekend. An Olympic that I have done the last three years. I keep trying to get faster. We will see how it goes.

Randy, I am totally blown away by those 100 times. I am getting slower, not faster. I keep hoping that it is because I am really working on technique and that I am getting slower before I make a big improvement....... We will see

Swim training, same here: it's on my schedule, so I do it. There are a couple things I like: it's the sport I've made the biggest gains in, first of all. I started training in February, and my first swim was 10 minutes, and I couldn't do more than one lap without having to catch my breath. And this was after running a HM in September last year! Yesterday, I swam for 45 minutes and tomorrow I'm due to swim for an hour, so it's nice to see that progress. The second thing I like is that, even though I'm usually pretty spent when I get out of the water, it's the only one of the three sports where I feel strong when I'm done. Biking and running usually just leave me looking ragged.

Having said that, I am not enthusiastic about swimming for an hour at 5am tomorrow...Foot in mouth

Swim Training? I love Swim Training! I am a water rat! I don't swim overly fast but my swim endurance beats my bike or run endurance any day! I grew up near lakes and we used to go swim all the time! Now what I hate about swim training ...

I usually swim at 4.30am in the morning where the water at the pool feel especially cold. I don't like that at all! It also seems that I am slower swimming in the morning. On Saturday's I swim at around 10am and it seems like I am gliding through the water compared to any other day!

No worries, Nate.  I'm not much into college rivalries.  If you asked me a question about ND football or IU basketball, I'd probably be hard pressed to answer.  I've been to Purdue a few times to give talks -- nice people and nice place.

Thanks for the replies about swimming, everyone.  I struggle with the idea of having a fixed, 'you will not deviate from this plan', plan.  It definitely ha a lot of merit.  On the other hand, I like being able to say to myself "well, my run legs feel good today, so today I go hard", or "I have an unexpected opportunity to bike 3 hours, so I bike 3 hours".  The problem, of course, is that it goes both ways (only with swimming, though...).  My subconscious mind is devious and thinks up all sorts of plausible-sounding reasons why I should not swim, or swim less, etc...  However, actually at the moment I'm in a pretty good place, swimming, making progress and swimming longer.  That's partly fear and partly luck and partly the fact that just getting it done a few times makes it easier to do the same again.

Randy: You must be part dolphin.

Swim training: I actually really like it as long as I'm warm. I like getting in the water between 2-4pm when the water is bath temperature, lol! I like swim team in the evenings after I've warmed up, but I'm always the last in the pool to start because I'm whining about how cold it is. Swim instructor's had to just shove me in a few times, but after I get going, I really enjoy it!

No swimming or cycling last couple weeks with the kids at home. Once school starts Monday, they'll be back on the schedule again. Yay!
