Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Ran the Double Trouble 5K and the 10K races this morning. My strategy of taking it easy and treating the races as part of a long run only worked to a certain point. I started them off that way at least. Was really fun to ease into each race and finish strong. The last mile of each was spent picking the next person to pass, and then passing them. Yes, I have more competitive juices than I'm willing to admit most of the time. 1.5 mile warm-up, 27:10 5K, 57:46 10K, and 1.5 mile cool down. No PR's except....fastest free races, and fastest back to back races...since those were both firsts. 7th in each race in my AG...out of 40ish gals in the 5K, not sure how many in the 10K. Then went to breakfast with Kerry and we had, you guessed it....table flag #7 at the restaurant. Maybe I should have played the lottery today. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hey, everybody! Larry -- Go get 1:55:33...I like the motivation! Samantha -- hope the training continues to go well. For me, I'm back at it (again!) after last weeks hustle & bustle. I'm looking at it this way -- 2013 starts tomorrow. I'm spending the next 10 weeks ramping up to start my HIM training for a race in June. Will be doing 2 swims/2bikes/3 runs a week (min) plus my twice weekly core/strength workouts. The strength training is paying off, particularly in the pool. Thought about motivation for next year while on my run, and feel good about getting it done this time, and making sure I'm upright on the bike

Member![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Samantha - The pool is a highlight for me. I might have pushed a bit to hard last week as I have been a bit under the weather Thurs-Sat. Starting to turn around and here come Sandy. Carol - What fun, back to back races and free to boot! That lucky number 7 might have been a sign of how well you handled it. Nice job! Mike - Don't think I'm ready for NYC marathon yet but would be glad to join you in a year or two. What is the HIM you do? I will be looking to fit one in next year. Yeah had a bit of a cold which slowed me down this week but storm or no storm I had to get out there today. Complete 5 miles around the neighborhood in about 49 minutes. Nice comfortable pace even with a bit of congestion lingering. Saw a couple turkey's way up in different trees. Not sure if it was the storm that spoked them up there or some hunters. Not sure if power will hold up for the next couple days. Seems like the rain will not be the bigger issue where I am but the winds are predicted to get up around 60mph tomorrow. Bring it on! Nothing you would not see in Kona. Right!?! I did catch a bit of NBC's, storm alert interrupted, coverage of Kona and my blood was pumping. One guy waited 22 years to get in as a legacy athlete. What commitment! |

Elite ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I took a couple days off this week and went light all over. Knee was ok through about 8.5 miles this after noon (7:52 pace for 9 miles) and only did 45 miles on the bike. Run felt good if the knee were just healthy. Gave the shoulder an entire week off from swimming to be picked up tomorrow. Ya I will try to do the mentor group again this winder and spring. Unfortunately signups are like during thanksgiving break when I often don't have internet access and they close id down quickly. The bike is still in bublewrap on the trainer for all my rides currently. I have the seat at an angle taht doesn't fry my knees anymore, not sure about how much weight it puts on my shoulders and aero position puts more stress on the top of my knee. Just gona limp through till the HIM, hopefully finish it in one peice (no pr expected) and then take a month off to get rested and start thigns back up slowly in January. |

New user![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I've been so busy, I haven't really kept up the past few days. We made the playoffs in football, and although it is exciting, it is an unbelievable amount of time. Of course, maybe that's why we're in the playoffs. Steve, quick question. I'm not feeling great right now, got a head cold and feel wore down. My plan calls for 4 3 2 this week running. I was planning on cutting one of those runs out so I can get better. I figure running Wednesday and Thursday, and then taking 2 days off before my race. What do you think. I got a 6 mile run in on Sunday. It was supposed to be 8, but I started to drag a little, and cut it short. Thanks |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() To our east coasters (Mike, Joe, anyone else I'm missing?), hope you will all be OK and come out with minimal/no damage. Steve, I'm sure it's hard to train at less than full capacity. It's tough to leave where you were behind and pick up where you are sometimes. When is your race? Larry, getting excited about now??? Sore from the racing on Saturday. Yesterday off, and today a 4 mile recovery run and a little strength routine I'm trying to incorporate partway through. One of my dogs knocked my garmin charge/download cradle thing off my desk and gnawed on it a bit. The watch part won't stay seated on it anymore, so no charging and no downloading. Hmmmm....will have to see how expesinve a new cradle is. Another of my furry friends had almost dug out under the gate by the time I got back from my run. I guess she was unhappy I didn't take her today. |
![]() ![]() |
Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Sounds like Sandy is busy wreaking havoc on you east coasters. If you blow away make sure to land in Idaho so you will at least have a place to stay Larry - I would take as much time off this week as you need to be fully recovered. I ended up taking way more time off during my taper because of my minor back sprain. I don't think it affected my race and I was glad to be 100%, and I definitely want you to be at the top of your game. Grats on the playoffs! Mike - you enjoy the swim? Were you the only one? I saw a pic on the news today of a guy running with the storm all around. Made me laugh because I figured it could be any one of us not wanting to let weather get in our way. Glad life is resettling. Steve - I'm glad I know how amazing the bodies ability to heal is. I am glad there is great hope for where you will be again. And I do hope you can get a new group going. I would be lost without my crew. Jim - hi! Carol - your two races were so cool. Glad you are recovering and still getting out there. Why do dogs chew on the very things we don't want them to chew on. Don't they know what those bones are for, sheesh. Training has been good. I'm choosing to be less demanding on myself for getting every single workout in during the week. That is my goal, but I also know the day is coming when dropping workouts will not really be an option. So I'm giving myself a break while still gettting in some good mileage. It's kinda nice. The weather let me get my bike outside today, WOOHOO! The trainer is gonna be the death of me. I am just sooo slow on the trainer. My rides take so much longer. Had a pretty tough run on Saturday. Was supposed to do 10miles, but I went into the run and hadn't eaten enough food. I noticed it pretty quickly and hoped the two GU packets I had would get me through. I walked quit a bit and ended up only doing 8. Oh well. swimming has been rather crappy lately as well. I feel like a blob trying to move through the water. It's like I forgot how to swim. I guess I took more time off from swimming than anything else, so I'm sure it will come back in time. Have a great week everyone! |
![]() ![]() |
Elite ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Larry, ideally I would drop the middle run so you have a short run a day off a short run a day off and race. But if you are feeling bad take what you need. If you are feeling really lousy I would drop the 4 and the 2 and drop the 3 down to 2 and just get the legs moving. That would look like day off short run 2 miles two days off race. I am struggling through. 2200 yard swim tonight at a comfortable pace not wanting to stress the shoulder. We see how the knee feels tomorrow after Sunday's run. For now I am doing no run or bike the day after my long run on Sunday. I figure I can get through a HIM, but it probably won't be pretty, I will have to dial in my pacing smartly as the next weeks pass. Race is on 12/1 I think, whatever that Saturday is. After the race I will take a full month off to get healthy before 2013 builds. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Larry, hope you feel better sooner rather than later. I like it that Steve always reminds us that our fitness is pretty well set long before race week. So easy to feel panicky when illness or life sets in, but he is right. Congrats on making the playoffs. Fun to be around excited kids! Steve, that race will be here before you know it. You are pretty goal oriented, but I have a feeling you will arrive at the starting line and just be open to the whole experience. If you're slower than you'd like, I hope you run across more people to encourage because you are good at that. Samantha, hope you can have some fun with your fitness level right now. Feel like riding rather than swimming...do it. Feel like hiking or mountain climbing instead of running...yeah! As you said, plenty of opportunity for structure coming up. Unlike I'm suggesting to everyone else, I need to be MORE structured now. No more trail runs or impromptu races for a little while as I try to settle more into my marathon plan. Been incorporating some strength/core/foam roller stuff lately, and already feeling more balanced. Looks like power is out for many of our east coasters, but do hope they will check in when they can and let us know they are OK.

Elite ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Samantha, you totally can't beat yourself off during your offseason. Have fun don't worry about pace or anything. Just keep a little fitness so you can build faster in the spring it is all good. Just enjoy those fall leaves and cooler temp. It must be getting really beautful up there about now. Well, my short runs are getting back to decent. Todays run felt pretty good, 7:49, 7:34, 7:24, 7:20, 7:14, 7:20 mpm paces in z3. Swim last night... not so much. It was ok but need to baby that shoulder give it a day of ice it etc. Hrm 2 build weeks and then taper. If I don't overdue something I think I will be alright. Swim is just gona suck, bike gona be soso and run could be good or really bad. Oh well. And I always chear folks on during triathlons. I always thank the volunteers, police, etc. Larry you are going to be just fine, sleep, drink fluids get healthy, you are good to go for your race. |
|
![]() ![]() |
New user![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() thanks, Steve. Good to hear. I've been getting plenty of rest and fluid. I'm feeling a little better and may try to get 2 to 3 miles in tomorrow. |
![]() ![]() |
Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Larry, glad you are feeling a bit better! Having a cold will keep you from doing too much during your taper week (OK, it's a reach, but trying to find that silver lining). Steve, nice run for you! Glad things are feeling better, and the race potential is looking up. Know you encourage others on the course...I was just saying that there would be more around you needing encouragement if you are not quite so speedy Just working the plan here. Still trying to see if the Pfitz 55/18 plan is for me. I think it may just work out. This is week 3...first week without a race of some kind. Been incorporating a little core/strength work on my recovery run days and I think it's helping already. Since my swim/bike = 0, I think that is a critical thing for injury prevention. OK, waiting for Larry's race report! Go Larry!!!! |
![]() ![]() |
New user![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Steve, glad the running is coming back with less injury issues. Samantha, I've been doing more core strength stuff as well. Keep it up, I think it helps a bunch. I got a 2 mile run in this morning, and i felt pretty good. I'm going to rest the next two days, and the race is on Sunday. I feel like I didn't do much this week, but I'm going to trust in the consistent 10 months of training that I've done. I'm starting to get excited about it. The weather is supposed to be calm, and in the upper thirtees. |

![]() ![]() |
Member![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Mike - How did you survive the storm? Not sure what I was think on your last post but when I hear NYC I think marathon, not Tri. Not sure I would want to jump in the Hudson river otherwise i'd be there with you. I have relatives in Lk Winepesauke and would like to run a race up there, and there was one in Pocono PA which I am starting to warm up to the idea of running. Larry - Get healthy and have a great race! Carol - Hope those ankles feel better. I used to enjoy the trails more and maybe when I get in better shape that might change but I like being injury free. With the leaves and rain around here the trail conditions become a little sketchy. Steve - Glad your knee is getting back into shape. Your 75% is probably still better than most so you really exemplify how to make the most of a bad situation. Samantha - One day does not an athlete make. Winter may slow us down but will not prevent you from getting to the starting line. Sounds like you have broken the couch black hole bond. The attraction might be there but you have found the power to resist. The storm has sideline me for the week so far. No power, otherwise things are ok. Had a heck of a time finding gas the past couple days but hope the worst is over. If it wasn't for the 50 mile commute I might use it as a training opportunity. lol... |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Joe -- we were fine up here, just some high winds on Monday & Tuesday. But how are you? Not sure where in NJ you are, but hope all is well. My sister-in-law is in NJ (just west of Montclair area) and still has no power. Was told it may be a week or more. I'm feeling good about week 1 of back at it. This core/strength training I'm doing 2x a week is getting to be hard. Workouts are really ramping up, and I feel like my trainer is treating me like a project ![]() And my appetite has taken off again. I feel like I could eat constantly, and its tough battling the "Feed me!!" fight. Keeping lots of low cal snacks around to help with this. What does everyone have going for the weekend? A bike & a good run for me. |

New user![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() The sickness is gone, but I woke up this morning and my ankle was extremely stiff and tender. I have no idea why. I hope it feels better by Sunday. Even with ibuprofen, I don't think I could run on it today. Other news. I am in the 180's now for my weight. Officially my scale read 189.8. I want to get to 178 pounds, and stay under 180 for good. That would put my under 12% body fat. Football playoff game tonite, and hopefully getting ready for next week's team tomorrow, and if the ankle cooperates HM on Sunday |
![]() ![]() |
Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Larry, glad you have some good running weather shaping up for race day! You've put in a really solid round of trianing, so glad it's almost time to celebrate that with your race. Joe, I hear you on the trails and risk of injury. I feel very fortunate to have made it through without sprained ankles (or worse). Glad you seem to have emerged from Sandy OK. Mike, glad you guys are OK too. Sounds like you have found a good trainer and are laying a solid foundation. If you figure out how to resist the pull of the pantry once and for all, please do let me know! Samantha, how is the free flowing triathlete recovery phase going? Steve, hope your body is continuing to hold up well! Yesterday was an 8 miler with 4 miles of LT in the middle. I was aiming for 9:00 on the middle miles, and hit it pretty well with 9:51, 10:01, 8:52, 9:01, 9:01, 8:51, 10:23, 10:00. But I was pretty well done after that. I'm 9 lbs over where I felt the best last year, and losing those would be my best ticket to better running. Must control intake! 14 miles on tap for tomorrow. |
![]() ![]() |
Elite ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Good splits Carol, I can't wait until your 9:00 mpm pace is Z2 and your LT is 8:00. Larry, put some ice on that ankle and rest it till the race. Hopefully it was just your ankle healing up some or just getting tweaked while drempt of running lastnight. October is done, toss up those numbers for good or ill.
Nowhere near where I wanted to be for October mileage, but my annual bike and run are better than last year. I am just going to have to limp through the swim with my shoulder continuing to not tollerate the swiming well at all. The knee has been ok, but mostly because I have not had any long runs in the past 2 weeks. We shall see how it holds up on Sunday for my long. It would be really nice if it held up past mile 10 this week. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Baowolf - 2012-11-02 10:07 AM I can't wait until your 9:00 mpm pace is Z2 and your LT is 8:00. Me either, but only in my dreams right now. Hope everything holds together for you on the long run! Larry, I think tapering sometimes creates some weird pains. Maybe magnified some by having to really put the brakes on with being sick. Really hoping this will pass and you will be ready to run. Totals below. I see my annual cycling goal (2K) slipping away, but am enjoying focusing on running too much to care. May add in some short trainer spins to help with run recovery, but anything indoors is always a reach for me.

Nothing to brag about this month. I'm really fighting what might be called fatigue. My desire to get up in the morning is non-existent and I feel tired all the time. I expected to feel more energy since I am doing less, but have built up so much fitness. Any thoughts as to why I'm feeling this way? I haven't been taking vitamins so I'm gonna start today and see if that makes a difference. Motivation please come back! Steve - so glad things are starting to work normal again and the HIM is looking doable. Thanks for your encouragement on getting things done over the winter. As I wrote above, it seems less than normal to feel the way I am feeling, but I don't know what normal is. And yes it is beautiful out here right now. The temps have remained between 40-60 with some rain here and there. I would post a pic, but I don't know how. Carol - you are gonna see your running dreams come true because you are going after it. You next race is gonna be so sweet! Larry - Biggest Loser's eat your heart out because Larry is on the move. Dude that is AMAZING! And Sunday is another big milestone for you. Definitely looking forward to hearing about it. Joe - Glad you are doing good over there in the wetlands. I've never seen mass destruction like that and always wonder what it would be like, but I'm very glad I live in Idaho. Nothing really ever seems to happen around here and that is one reason I like it so much. Jim - how are ya? Mike - sounds like a good start to the next journey. I'm still trying to remember to do my core work. It is probably my least favorite thing to do. I would rather do lunges all day than do core work. I'm trying to convince myself to get out for my long bike today, then tomorrow I have a 10mile run and 2000yrd swim on Sunday. Happy weekend. |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hey guys, great totals being posted!! I really don't have any to show. November should be posting some good mileage! Not sure how my year will shape up next year. I am planning on doing LA Marathon in March (it usually falls right around my B-day and I really want to run its new course. I do plan on doing several HIMs and hopefully HITs full next Dec., although my Tri Club puts on a full in Oct that has a really nasty bike course (lots of climbing) that I would like to do but I will not commit to 2 fulls till I see how my year goes! Samantha~ I'm great thank you! Kinda struggling to get back on track, a body that's been at rest for 4 months likes to stay at rest! Steve~ I missed the era when you were injured, so sorry to hear but glad to see you back to it! As I said, I will not be racing HITS but I am coming out there and would love to meet up with you! If you need a place to ship your bike to, let me know! Larry~ WOW!! Good luck this weekend! Carol~ Congrats on 11th! Those pictures are beautiful! Mike~ My condolences!Great job jumping back into it! Joe~ Glad to hear you weathered to storm! Mitch is still lurking around! He just now returning to running but is still pretty limited in how much he can do! Crazy injury! If I missed anyone I am sorry, it is rare that I get peaceful time with a computer lately! Happy training!!

Elite ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Carol, nice run miles. If you can keep your run around 150 miles per month and throw in hills 1 week and 800s the next with that tempo run every week I think you will see some improved speed. Another fun thing to do is find a gradual down hill 1-3 % slope and run down it fast to get used to running with faster than comfortable turnover rate, then try to maintain that speed for 100 yard after you hit the flat again. And 200 miles in 2 months on the trainer... not so hard, 200/8= 25 miles a week and 2000 is such a nice even number.... Samantha, probably not exercize related fatigue or vitamin related. Sometimes you just have to get the leggs moving and do the work to get back in the swing of things. Larry, yes aches and pains are common in a taper. Hopefully today is better than yesterday. Often pains migrate around, so today it is the ankle the next day your knee, etc. It is good if it migrates just means your system is reparing itself and putting up orange cones "danger we are fixing this muscle, do not run on it for a few days ok?" Today's run 8:01, 7:27, 7:33, 7:36, 7:21, 7:16, 6:58 all in Z3. Pretty sure I will be able to do the HIM, pretty sure it won't be a PR, meh. I will be driving down so no need to ship the bike, is only like 900 miles one way. My oldest son's 5k in mud and rain this week 17:59. He is ranked 6th in the region at the moment and the top 5 go to state individually even if the team as a whole does not qualify. He missed going to state individually the last 2 years by 1 second. Just the tiniest bit of more work ethic and he would be there. Maybe he can pull it off this year, all coming up in the next 2-3 weeks. 2 IM's in one year is pretty brutal. Last year I did an IM at the end of July and wanted to do a HM at the beginning of October. 2 months was not enough recovery time for me even for a half mary. In 2014 I may do 2 IMs one in April one in September, but that is 5 months appart (1 month to recover 4 months to rebuild). Doing 3 HIM's in a year is much easier on the body. |
![]() ![]() |
Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Steve - so glad you are gonna do the HIM! Your son is pretty fast and I hope he makes state this year, but it could also be a great lesson. Larry - Not too long now. Have a blast! Jim - I hear ya on getting back into things. I didn't take four months off and I'm still finding it hard. Went out to do a long bike today and the trail I use was blocked off about 5 miles in. I was super bummed. Turned around and called it at a measly 11miles. I'm sure Steve is right about just needing to keep going. I guess I want it to be something else so I don't have to take responsibility...bleh! |
