Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I finally realize why people are fearful of OWS. Took a short (8 miles) ride to the local lake, swam 20 minutes, then 8 miles home. Rest week for me, plus the left calf is just starting to feel better. Really just rode very casual. Anyway, swimming with the head in the water in the pool, I am just starting to learn. Trying that in open water. WTF!!!!! Totally different. This lake is pretty clean, but as I look down, i see weeds etc. Kind of freaked me out. I don't get too nervous for my mountain bike races or a 5k, but I think I am officially freaked for my first Tri in August. I better put some more time in open water and the pool. Good luck to Jeff, Shaun, Kelly and Rudy. |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Good luck to Jeff, Shaun, Kelly and Rudy this weekend!!!!
Rizer - I too am a little freaked out by the swim for my tri next month. I have been swimming 3 days a week and learning. I haven't done any OWS yet but I have been told the lake the tri is in will be black - I think that is going to really disorient me/freak me out.No advice, but I can commiserate.... |

![]() | ![]() karen26.2 - 2011-06-17 1:06 PM uhcoog - 2011-06-17 10:57 AM Karen, is it okay that I find the fact you have 26.2 in your user name but supposedly don't run well kinda funny? I think finding a pacing balance has been very difficult for me even with all the pacing calculators out there. I find it hard to resist the urge to race other people on the bike. Having a Garmin has helped a bit. While not a stictly by the numbers guy I'm not totally a feel guy anymore either. Sunday was the best I've done it so far and I think I shot a little to the conservative side. Yes, well the karen26.2 came from my husband years ago when I was trying to figure out a user name for something. I was only doing marathons at the time so he came up with that. It just stuck but is kind of funny. And I should retract and say I'm not a "horrible" runner, just slow. Slow and steady and can go forever (usually) so the longer distances work well for me. Not a sprinter at all. My Garmin has helped me with running. I do use it for biking, but really only to capture distance and pace. My HR data is not very helpful to me, because I end most rides with almost all at or below Z1. I guess it's useful data in that the terrain around here is not good for staying in a certain zone (you're either going uphill or downhill), or I need to just push myself harder. I have not figured that out yet. you need to push harder. particularly on the bike. dont be afraid to feel the burn. even on the run go hard sometimes. a 5k should hurt. i am not sure which gives much more trepidation a HM or a 5k. Dang 5ks hurt. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Jeff is racing too? You all post so much I must miss things. Have a great race! (Does anyone other than me work?) |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Yes, Kelly is correct. I'm killing the hills to get my HR up, but it drops so fast and stays low on the downhill. Even the flats it's often low because I have no more gearing. But, I think I'm going to make the switch to an 11-28 so that might help. |

Gives me more reason to find you and grab onto your leg when the horn goes off!!! Got some more swim time in the pool this morning. 600 yards. But plenty of rest in between. The life guard had me use one of the water dumb bells as a pull buoy for a couple laps., as they don't have any. Holy canoli!!!!! Huge difference. I've been dragging apparently. I am up to 75 yds at once. This is my fourth time in the pool. The first time, 1 was gassed after the first 25 yds. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() oh yeah,i had a nice swim after work yesterday. I had to go to a different gym as my usual one is remodeling the pool area. It wasn't too crowded but I was the only swimmer there. All of the lanes were filled with the floaters or bouncers. One guy in a lane saw me swim a few laps in the open area and asked me if I wanted to switch and take his lane. That was nice of him. |

Pat Griskus Oly today - 2:33:xx, swim was shortened due to fog, would ahve done between 2:45-2:50 if teh race had been full length. i know i had a good swim because i saw the first person out of the water. also a friend who is an awesome swimmer was just exiting T1 as i was entering. bike was okay, run was good. triple burger and beer: sublime. will post full report later. |

![]() | ![]() props to Rudy who continues to roll: he won the Clyde division at Patriot HIM! Race report from Griskus is up. Happy fathers day to all the fathers. I'll be logging much time at the pool with my kids while drinking beer and eating hamburgers. they hopefully someone will challenge ROry Macellroy and make the US open competive. This week is a transition week from a training perspective. my hilly monster races are over, next tri is Park City Oly in August, which is basically ITU racing and super flat, and the MV in September, also flat bike, rolling run - I have 12 weeks to get 40K TT to 1:10. if i can do that maybe i can at least give Rudy a challenge
