I hope it has a hot tub!! That race is like winning 50million in the lottery for me...I just can't wrap my head around that!

So i drug (is that a word - my mind is numb from teacher meetings) my butt out of bed this morning for a quick ride before the kids got up.  My plan called for hill repeats... I was a little wary of going hard because of the pain in my knee so I decided not to push it.

But then I hit my first hill, and I found myself rising out of the saddle to chug up the road as fast as I could...  Then my brain started thinking about how aweful that warm coors would taste and so I slowed down.  But I found myself pushing again... and again...

So, about 30 minutes into the ride my knee starts to hurt and I say to myself, Even if they have to drag my in a body bag I'm making it to the start line of that HIM... and then it hit me...  I've always been the type of person who has accomplished things not by being the best but by working the hardest.  Unfortunately that hard work is not the most effective effort. I'm the guy at work who takes on the extra duty but is burnt out by February and then I struggle through the last 3 months.  I spend 3 hours cleaning up the house and then have a hissy fit when my kids mess it up.   I sign up for a HIM with only 8 weeks to prepare having not run or swam for 6 weeks... Not smart.

So it occurs to me that I might need to make a paradigm shift and embrace the idea that less is more.  I need to be clever and use my brain instead of my gumption to make this happen. I'd rather sit in the back of a SAG van than sit at home because I quit (there have been too many times that I've quit on myself when it comes to exercise.  Big goals that rarely got realized.)  So, I'm going to make it my goal to make it to the start line.  If I get there and I'm only 75% ready - so be it.

Gentlemen - Sorry for the long message... Just wanted to get this out and I want to be held accountable - hence why I joined this group.  I've come a long way since November when I had to jog in the water because I couldn't even run a mile without hurting my knee... I've changed both physically and mentally... I guess this is the next step.  Thanks for the support.

Both Kevin and Darren are absolutely right! We will support you, not like an athletic supporter of course... Smile

Get your training plan in place and follow it just like you have everything else this year. We will continue to shame you or threaten you with warm coors lite until you finish the race!

Like Darren has said, you can do it today.

It is just how comfortable and fast you want to do it.

Go for it!

First real training run in about 6 weeks this morning. 4 miles, slow but steady.

Bought a new bike, pedals, cycling shoes and bike computer for my wife last night. Forgot to get a cycle trainer tire...damn, will be needing that sooner than later! Suppose I should find a cycle trainer for her as well...

ohhhhh, lucky wife.

She is going to try a triathlon!

Got a road bike at LBS %20 off plus 15% off accessories.

So jealous!  It's pretty cool how many of our wives are getting into the exercise habit... I wonder if Heidi, my wife, will have decide to try it.  The problem is - she hates swimming in lakes and ponds.  Your description Thor of swimming through the seaweed would be a deal breaker.  Who knows, maybe someday.

On the other hand - I had a nice conversation with my cousin during a training ride and he made a great point.  Sure - he was happy that his wife was willing to take the occasional ride with him - but he really guarded his passion and was wary of letting anyone in that might ruin the experience.  I had a nice run today after work and I would have to agree - running by myself can be awesome - but running with others can mess with that solitude.  I would love to find a happy medium.

Until she decides to take the plunge - it just means more money for beer.

I just registered for the HIM and HM... Won't lie - doing a HIM will be challenging...

However, I'm watching the Browns play the Green Bay Packers and the Browns are winning 32-10.  Yes the Browns.  So anything is possible.Laughing

Pre-season.

Kevin - I know it's preseason but that doesn't stop me from hoping... Who do you root for?  As a Browns/Indians fan, I'll take hope wherever I can find it.

I hopped on the scale today to discover that in the last two weeks I have gone from 178.8 to 186.  Time to get my a$$ back in gear.  Swim today.  Ride tomorrow.  Time to start counting calories again...

Being from the NW, I used to root for the SeaHawks, but they broke my heart in 1984 when they did not go to the Super bowl when they lost the AFC championship game  (I was 7).  So I started rooting for the Redskins in 1987, the year Doug Williams started the 2nd half of a Super Bowl that they were down 10-0 at half to the Denver Broncos (Being an ex Seahawk fan, I hated Elway's Buck teathed grimmace/smile; I was 10.)  In the 2nd half, we put up 45 unnanswered points on Denver and routed them 45-10.  I watched the Redskins win 2 more superbowls behind the counter tre of Joe Gibbs, and have rooted for them ever since (they're pretty terrible in many recent years, just a step above the Cleaveland Browns, who used to be watchable when they had Bernie Kosar so many years ago!Wink

How did I miss this post?  Not sure which part I enjoyed more - the Elway bashing or the Bernie reference.

I've routed for the skins in the past... My wife thinks Mike Shanahan is hot (in her top 5 if you can believe that!)  No worries - the Redskins cheerleaders are pretty hot too...Wink

First ride for 2 weeks.  I'm going to do a SLOW/NOT INTENSE 5 miler and see how the back of my knee responds to pedalling.  I felt it earlier today walking around, but as I sit around and grow stagnet around my house today, the feeling has gone away, and it's motivated me to go try.  Hoping if it goes well that tomorrow, I will go swim for 30min. and spin on the stationary for 30 min. in the a.m.

How'd the ride go and more importantly - did you feel any pain?  I'm amused!  I love how your idea of a SLOW/NOT INTENSE ride is a pretty good clip for me.  Hope the run goes well tomorrow.

After flying solo with the boys for the week, I finally sat down with my computer and worked on my plan for the HIM.  As I worked on my 7 week plan, I found myself thinking way too much.  My issue was that I felt like I wasn't doing enough, so then I would increase my miliage and then worry that I'd hurt my knee... I was in complete a$$lock.  So, I took a break, sat back and had a beer.  As usual, that helped.

So instead of planning the whole thing out, I'm just gonna let my body make the call.  I was sore most of the week.  I really over did it on the bike, especially when added to the fact that I started running again after 7 weeks off.  My left shoulder also hurt enough that I cut my swim yesterday short.  So, I need to do less.  Here are my totals: Bike - 83 miles, Run - 9, Swim 2100 yards

This upcoming week is a recovery week for me.  So, while I need to rest, I also need to continue to build my run totals.  So, I plan on dialing back the bike while increasing my days running (per DH's suggestion) to get my totals to: Bike - 60 Miles Run 14 miles..... Swim 1600.  I will also do most of my running on trails and will ice and stretch like a machine.

Then for next week, I plan on increasing the bike back to what it should be while only adding a few miles to the run total.  I hope to get close to a 10 mile long run this week.  Here are the totals. Bike - 85 Miles Run 17 miles Swim 2000.

Here is my plan... If I feel good.  Great...I'll tweak it SLIGHTLY.  If I feel sore, I'll go easy.

During my run today, I tried to make peace with the plan (which I'm not sure is enough - I feel like I should be doing more).  As I posted on facebook (that's for the motivation KB), the only way I really fail is if I quit.  So I'm gonna go light on the milage and deal with it on race day.

PS - Watching the Browns preseason game vs. the Eagles... Brutal...

Congratulations Darren on finishing another marathon.  Solid work.

David-  Listen to the body.  Move forward with the plan.  Keep working on those totals while listening to your body.

I woke up sore today, most noticeably behind my left knee.  It feels like a constant hyperextension.  weird.  I am going to swim for 30 min. today and spin for 30 on the stationary w/ little to no resistance.  We're taking the kids to the Y with us and my wife is doing one of there fitness classes.

Life is good.

Love the Y.  Hope you guys had a good workout!

Well dragged my a$$ out of bed this morning for a little 4mile run...probably would have rolled back into bed if I hadn't been reading Darren's race report last night.  Apparently 1/week after not running for 6weeks doesn't improve fitness.

Gotta get into the groove again! So I guess I will post here my Sept. goals. Ride me like a rented mule if I am not hitting the numbers. Don't let me get away with any lame a$$ excuses.

Bike-14 workouts-Approx. 250-275 miles

Run-14 workouts-Approx 65 miles

Swim-4 workouts(just want to maintain over winter, plus pool closed until Sept 8 or 9)

Lastly...I am going off the beer wagon for the month of September. Been drinking waay too much beer lately.

Any thoughts gentlemen?

I love declarations of training.  I'm off of the wagon  as well.  My reign of bying beer and triathlon gear, and pretty much anything else I want on the "buy now, pay later" program is over.  My wife and I are going to opporate within a monthly budget for the first time in a long while.  I'm like an addict coming clean.  I've been clean for 5 days now.  When I due imbibe, it'll be paid for in cash $, and will make it all the more sweater.

Thor, I think the plan is stellar.  I'm hoping your foot is feeling alot better.  If not, just do what you can on the run.

I ran 3 miles for the first time since tri on Aug. 5th.  I had to walk/run after 1 mile due to the tightness behind the knee.  I had visions of aqua jogging, and the eliptical machine for september, or I'll have to slow my pace by at least 1 minute/mi, if I'm running on the pavement.  I'm biking to work and college this afternoon, casual.

So if youre off the beer wagon for September, does that mean no more molson?  Oh my god, how will you function?  The only reason why you might be able to make it is because it's not hockey season...

I think your goals are achievable.  My only concern is that you might be asking a little too much of your self in regards to the run...  Does your foot still hurt at all?  If you think that your can make it happen though - I am more than willing to give you crap if you start acting like a fat American...

Glad to hear you got your run in!  It's a huge step forward.  Question - do you have any fields near your college or school?  I've been avoiding pavement like the plague and running on the local school's CC path and I've felt a lot better.  Also - I'm a big fan of aquajogging - believe it or not - you can really push it and get your heart rate up.  Aqua jogging has the additional benefit of preventing muscle loss and you will come out ahead by working in the pool.

Good luck on the beer for cash program... I haven't bought beer in two weeks... I'm having our monthly beer tasting on Thursday.  We are sampling Pilners... Might have to trade in some aluminum cans...

Work first than beer...

Went for a quick ride tonight.  I had wanted to go 15 on the bike but it was my wife's turn to work out in the morning, so I was only able to grab 10 after dinner.  Going for a ride as the sun is setting is testing fate... and it's also stupid.  I had a rear light so I wasn't worried about people hitting me, but I  didn't have a headlamp so I couldn't see anything.  Thankful to get home without hitting a huge pothole...  The good news is that I'm not feeling sore tonight.  Thank god for rest weeks...

I know a few of you aren't imbibing - so I had a couple in your honor tonight.  Started off with a refreshing fruit beer - Celis Raspberry... It's a belgian with raspberry.  The fruit is subtle but damn tasty.  Then I finished off the night with Sunshine Pils by Troegs... Also a tasty beverage. I love the crispness of a really good pilsner.  Too bad the king of beers gave the style a bad name.  I resisted the urge for another beer or ice cream even though I had saved enough calories because I'm hosting a beer tasting tomorrow at my house.  I'll need all the calories I can get.

I hit 178.4 this morning... Goal is to get to 175 when I complete the HIM.

Hope all is well!

Monthly Goal:  Get knee pain under wraps.

I've biked on the spin and cycle without knee pain.  I just went at half the effort, and went through the motions while still getting in a workout.  Tuesday's run caused pain at 8:00/mi pace, but when I backed off, pain seemed to subside.

The plan:  Continue to bike at moderate rate on spin bike and cycle.  (I'm riding to work and back tomorrow, as wife goes to class, and i don't have a chance to get in bike otherwise.)

Every time a run comes up in the plan, I am going to do the time in the pool as an aquajog, or I will do it on the time on the eliptical machine.  both do not cause pain.

Swims will be normal.

Good to be back at it.  Hoping that I can be up and running in a couple weeks time.

I cracked.  Five days into the plan, my financial aid money came in and I went out and bought wife a 6pk. of Mikes, while I am endulging in Sierra Nevada Torpedo IPA.  Tasty.  Back off the wagon tomorrow.  I just had to get that off of my chest, and new this was a safe place.Laughing

What's said in the beer appreciate society/stays in the beer appreciation society.  Plus, it's clear you were thinking of your wife when you went to the beer store.  The Torpedo is one of my favs.  So hoppy - yet balanced.

Loved the buttwiper comment... I can see why you married her... smart woman.

Thanks Kevin for the kind words... This site has been a huge part of my success so far and I will continue to lean on you, Thor, and DH for support as I make a life long committment to exercise (and beer drinking).

Have a great day everybody!

It is mentally tough working out when you have a nagging injury that is not bad enough to sideline you but something that could get worse. A fine line to walk....just don`t over do it! You have all winter to train. Do you have a cycle trainer at home? I can send you some easy to follow training sessions I picked up from a triathlon coach my wife works with.

Oh and it is September when we stop buying beer...stock up Laughing
