I hope Cole gets the help he deserves. I hate docs that thrust a psych diagnosis on someone just because they can't ID what's wrong. Cop out.

Had conferences today at the school.  Went okay.  Oldest and youngest are golden.  Middle...not so much.  I don't get it.  Same gene pool yet super different.  Oldest and youngest are VERY similar but Cole is just WAY different.  Don't get me wrong, I am okay with different but I don't see why he has to have all the issues!  At least spread them out between the three kids!  Nope, poor Cole gets dumped on.  He is going to be evaluated by the OT.  His fine motor skillz suck.  Gotta get his hearing checked again.  For like the 10th time.  He fails every time but not by enough.  They always tell me to come back in 6 months.  I am tired of it!  Give me some answers.  Why does he keep failing????  Why won't you fix the problem?? What is the problem???  I can't get anyone to listen to my concerns in the audiology department.  GRRR!  I am almost at a loss of what to do.  I guess it's time to start demanding second and third opinions.  Why do I have to fight to get answers for my child????

Rant over.  Thanks for listening! I feel a bit better.

Parents must fight for their kids to get services in the schools.  If you don't fight, they will spend the money on the people who yell louder.  It is a shame, but it the way the system works.

Sorry about your son's difficulties, but he is lucky to have a mother like you fighting for what he deserves!  <img align='middle' src='https://beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/images/emoticons/smile.gif'>

That's really frustrating.  Sorry you have to deal with all of that.

You could start by talking to someone who has a background in education and knows the process and governing laws with regard to this sort of thing.  It might not provide specific answers but it could point you in the right direction and help guide you through all the educational jargon... or at the very least be a good sounding board.

Hey, so did you guys know that I used to be a teacher and a principal and a professor of special education and that I have my own consulting business whereby I do advocacy for parents of special needs kids, provide direct service to kids and facilitate teacher training workshops?

Thanks mila!  It's not so much the school part, Cole's teacher is beyond great.  She identified his OT issues even before I mentioned them (it's been an ongoing problem).  It is the military medical people I have to deal with in audiology.  They are used to examining sailors, not a 5 year old boy who doesn't want to cooperate with them.   His pediatrition isn't super great either.  We've seen two ENT's.  One told me to get him evaluated for Asberger's (dude, you are and ENT, not a developmental ped.  We've seen the developmental ped already.  Thanks)  The other ENT was just wierd.  Time for another visit to the pediatrition for a referal for yet another ENT.  Or better yet, a pediatric audiologist!  That would be great.  In fact, I'm gonna go make an appt right now with the doc.

Gotchya... so glad his teacher is on top of it, then, that makes a HUGE difference!  With that said... if there is a concern that the hearing, even if it's not "enough of a failure", is causing an educational impact and the school is bringing it to your attention I would have a few questions about that.  Does the school system not have an audiologist on staff that an provide the hearing test (though if the system doesn't have a soundproof booth, which many don't, I wouldn't recommend going that route)?

Come to Atlanta... I have a great ENT for you .

Where are you in Atlanta?  My sister is an administrator in the school system in the special ed department.  I think she is in Decalb county.

Offthegrid - 2008-10-22 10:29 PM Vampies, I'm an idiot. I went to ride my bike trainer last night, and got out my new bike pump. It's a cheaper one, but it's a Pedros, and a LOT better than what I had been using. But the seal on the valve was so tight I couldn't get the stinking thing off. I wriggled. I twisted. I tore my tube - and I had no spares. DRAT!

Don't you hate that??? I hate any kind of flat tyre grrrr!

How do you guys make photos show up in these boards???

If you are using a html tag (like from photobucket), copy the link on photobucket.  Then post your reply.  Hit the button that has the picture of the tree on it at the top of your reply window and it will give you a space to paste your html tag.  Before I hit submit, I hit preview and delete the red x and the text that follows... not sure why it does that but it often does. Then hit submit.

Alternately, you can type your text and then check the box for "Attach file after posting" underneath your reply window.  Then hit submit and it will allow you to browse your pictures and upload.  You just need to make sure you have compressed your pictures enough to fit (or go to resize.it and upload pictures there to resize them if you are unsure how to compress them).

I just type:

<img src="">

Then, I put the link where the photo is between the "" marks. Like this:

ebshot - 2008-10-22 2:05 AM I'm feeling flabby.  I think I need to start tracking my calories again.  Getting a little carried away lately.

I have that problem too. I hate that bloated feeling that tells you you've had too much of a good thing!!! Tracking calories works really well for me. Sadly its quite time consuming!

I run on the treadmill a lot and whilst its not my favourite thing, it has its place, especially at 5am when its cold and dark outside and you have no other time to run

Offthegrid - 2008-10-22 10:31 PM But, the really good news is that I got my lazy bum-bum out of bed this morning and went swimming. There was only one other person there -- and he was wearing regular beach swim trunks. And he lapped me. Bad. Oh, well!

The first ever triathlon I did I was so unfit that I was passed by EVERYONE on the bike course, including a little boy. How embarrasing!!! LOL

I'm just about to start a long stretch of afternoon consults in about 15 mins. There are some tricky cases slotted in there from the sounds of things - I hope I can manage to make each one last only 15 mins so that I'm running on time for my clients! Argh!

I am such an emotional eater. Whenevet I get stressed I want to reach for the chocolate. Luckily I have resisted thus far today and for the past few weeks!!!!

Whenever I eat some, even if its a little, I want more and its harder to stop once I've started. So I just try really hard not to start at all. It usually works

Totally know what you mean. I'm the same way with all junk food. When I started really eating healthy, junk food tasted NASHTAY! Like why on earth do people think this tastes good kind of nasty. But then, a let a little slip here, had a bit there, and now, I'm back to eating junk food and thinking it tastes good. Yuck. I'm the same way with candy - I don't like candy, yet once I start eating it, I don't stop. Urgh. Good luck making it through your stressful afternoon without it!

One tip I saw is to keep a small set of handweights, like 2.5 or 5 pounds, in your desk drawer. When you want to reach for candy, reach for those instead and pop off ten bicep curls or tri kickbacks or something short and fast. You aren't doing real ST, just giving your hands and mind something else to think about and giving that craving time to take a hike.

I asked my parents if they would come to see me if I did an Ironman race in the future that wasn't too far away. My mom said: "Why would we want to go to a race? What would there be for us to do there all day but stand around?"

So I guess I'll never have a cheering section like other families. It makes me really sad.

Morning fellow Vamps!  Gonna try to get my run in today.  With Cole's doc appt, he won't be going to school and the other kids have a half day.  So, trying to squeeze it in around lunch time.  Gonna take Cole with me to the YMCA to see his friends and then take him out to lunch.  Should be fun!  Totally keeping him home after his doc appt.  A half day of hookie is okay right?  I think so, for a little bonding time.
