Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() robingray_260 - 2010-07-12 6:04 PM My Race went well yesterday - I think I finished in 1 hr 38 minutes for a 600 swim 13 mile bike 5k run. I wanted to finish under an hour and a half, but I guess I can work toward it. Finished 3rd in the Athena category - not sure about my age division or my splits as the final results are not yet available. Will get my race report finished once the results come in - which I hope is soon, cause I am itching to find out. awesome work! now you have a goal for next time. |

![]() Awesome news to report. Physical therapist gave me the green light to jump in the pool tonight, and I felt pretty darn good. There was some dull pain through parts of my stroke...but nothing that caused my stroke to alter. The therapist said my injury is something that just needs to be constantly stretched out...so swimming at an easy effort level is actually good for it. So it looks like I'll be able to do the tri I signed up for on July 25th. It's a 800m swim, 40k bike, 10k run...so an abbreviated Oly...and abbreviated in the spot I need it to be. I haven't been running the last 3 weeks since I wasn't planning on doing any more tris this season and have been focusing all on the bike. So my plan is to just cruise the swim...literally just take my sweet old time and save my energy. Relax in T1...maybe sit down for a little while and let my blood flow get back to vertical. Maybe make myself a sandwich or something. Then jump on my bike and absolutely hammer it like a time trial...come back to T2...same strategy as T1...decide if I actually want to run (knowing me I can't just quit)...then jog/walk the run...or whatever pace I can hold that's similar to a LSD. The chances of me executing that plan is between slim and none...somewhere along the swim my competitive juices will kick in...but with my shoulder being a small issue on the swim...and lack of running fitness recently...I probably shouldn't be running hard. But we'll see. |

Expert![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I've been absent from this thread for way too long. I've been terribly busy with work lately, and my bike training has been severely lacking. On the other hand, my running is right where I want it to be, and I'm getting back in the pool and I'm excited about that. Things keep popping up which makes it hard to go out for a 2 or 3 hour ride. Steelhead is rapidly approaching. Hopefully I can stop the bleeding and still meet my goal of 5:30 |

Expert![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() DirkP - 2010-07-09 3:20 PM I am trying to change my work out schedule so I can have an easier Sunday. I have been doing my long runs on Saturday and long rides on Sunday, but it makes my Sunday's kind of hectic. Today I ran my long run (10 miles) and I will do my long ride tomorrow (42 miles). My run today had to be later than I was planning because I had a dentist appointment I didn't realize was today and it was pretty tough because of the humidity. it was the slowest long run I have ever had (8:58 miles). I hated it but I made it through by sheer will. I suppose my ride last night could have had something to do with it but I don't know. I figured the first week of the new schedule would be a little tougher but I was hoping it wouldn't have been this tough. Next Friday I will be able to get out on the road in the early morning and I won't have to battle quite as hard. DANGGGGG. My long runs are all right around 9 flat or a little more. I only occasionally dip under 9s. Anyone ever run Yasso 800s? My summer team has been discussing them lately. Personally they seem pretty gimmicky at first glance, but I plan on doing them after my HIM just to have fun and work in some speed work for my mary. |

I know how hard it can be to try and swim slow with the competive juices going - on Sunday, I would make myself slow down on the swim only to speed back up a few seconds later. I think I would have thrown up if someone stuck a sandwich in my face at T1. Edited by robingray_260 2010-07-13 8:55 AM |

I have the same problem with the bike - I just haven't found time (but of course that is an excuse b/c I could always wake up at 4 am since it is light here). I was planning on a long 2 hour ride today, but I don't want to fight a 20+ mile headwind so again I am thwarted! |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() J- That's awesome! You're going to kill the bike in that tri with all the miles you've been putting in. Carl- Welcome back, we missed you. I understand how it can be with work. You will be seeing a lot less of me come the end of Aug when school starts up again. The internet is a huge time sucker, so it's usually the first thing to go. Got the split times from my last tri & I was a little annoyed because they did not post my TI & T2 times. Looks like those times got merged into the bike time because my swim & run time seem right on, but my bike time looks way off. I added up all the times and ended up with my OA, so I know T1 & T2 are not missing but hidden somewhere in my splits. Looking back, I don't remember crossing a blue pad leaving/entering transition on the bike leg. Kinda annoyed because I was really happy with my bike and knew my transitions were hella slow (didn't have my bike computer set either due to being rushed-I'll explain in my RR- so I can't even do an accurate estimate). oh well, either way it's obvious that the bike still needs to be my focus. The ladies that came in 3 & 4 beat me completely on the bike. I was right with them and/or a little ahead of them on the swim & run. Any advice on improving on the bike aside from ? I should have my RR up later today, figure I'll shave 6 mins off the bike time to estimate the T1 & T2 times. Don't know what else to do. Edited by jpbis26 2010-07-13 11:12 AM |

Pro ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Sounds like everyone had a busy weekend. I've got some good/bad news. I made my goal of 2 hrs for my olympic. Like I said, it was a short distance olympic. 1/4 mile swim/21mile bike/5 mile run. So it started out well, 6:03 swim and 58 min bike. I wanted to run 9 min miles, but ended up with 9:20. So I know I need to work on the run. The bad news is that there were a ton of very fast people there. Even though I swam a 1:23 split, 21.5 mph bike, I still ended up 18 out of 26 for my AG. If I plan to do this much more, I really need to figure out how to speed up the run!! I'll post a link to my RR when I can get to it. |

Don't know what else to do. The two tris I've done here in Japan were the same way, i.e., T1 and T2 rolled into the bike. Estimate is the best you can do. I'm thinking I could use the lap button on the garmin to get better estimates, i.e., hit start when I get to the bike and lap when I've crossed the mount line and do the same in T2. |

I am glad to hear you're cleared to swim as well but I also agree with Dan......judging by your cycling efforts for training there is NO WAY your gonna sit ans eat a sandwich during a race. There is no way I could even consider doing that. For me, I would have to bow out of the race altogether because I would go and hurt myself worse. Good luck no matter what you decide to do. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I just did a veeerrrrryyyy slllllooooowwww 2 mile run. It was exhausting for me to run so slow for such a short run but I am trying to build some mileage up without injuring myself. I ran 8:58 avg. miles. I was really trying to go as slow as I could but it was very difficult for me. Right from the start I was doing (keep in mind I am really thinking about slow running) 7:20 miles and it took about a half mile to back it down to something slow. It was hard for me to get my routine out of my head. Normally I would run 2 miles around 7:00 pace (hard pace BTW) for a good tempo effort. I know in the long term this will make me a better healthier runner. |

There was some pretty good swim and bike placements there. You were saying you need to focus more on your running and that may well be, but Humor me for a minute and then let more experienced athletes weigh in. Your avg. HR for the bike (170) was higher than the run (166), this seems out place to me. I wonder if you should try to back down some on the bike. I would freak if my HR was higher on the bike than the run. Usually my HR on the bike is 10-15 BPM slower on average for training. My oly my HR bike/ run was 154/162. Again, I'll let the others provide better insight since I have only raced once. Either way it looks like a good race to me! |

Only problem is that packet pickup is the day before, no pickup on the day of the race and the race doesn't start til 3:30 pm. What is up with that? It means I will have to stay in Boulder 2 nights (and sorry to all those that love Boulder - I can't stand it). |
