Fesslern - 2011-06-22 11:04 AM Is anyone going to use a rear disc?

I just bought a set of SRAM 60's and am currently debating a rear disc cover, just not sure yet.

I am bringin my rear disc cover and will test it on the course when I arrive in Louisville.  The only concern would be gusts of heavy winds.  I spent 7 years in Kentucky--if there is to be heavy winds that time of year, the winds are usually accompanied by massive thunderstorms.  I don't even want to think about it

Zipp404/808 tubulars for me...unless someone wants to give me $3K for a set of Firecrest carbon clinchers. You can get by with only one kidney.

Should be plenty of Hotels near the finish/great lawn. A buddy just got a room at Marriot, I think he said...May cost you $100+, unless you drive over from Clarksville, IN..cheaper hotels.

Detscourt...I just booked at the Sprinhill Suites downtown close to the finish line ( I was told)...they were pretty booked already. I got the info from the event's website.

Wow! this is getting close....I am starting to have nightmares about forgetting my water bottles!!...lol

Happy and Safe training!

Are there any hotel discount codes for athletes to use prior to the race? At IM Wisconsin on-site registration they handed out flyers with an Ironman athlete promo code that could be used all summer (but not for race week obviously) and it saved me some moo-lah!

Anyone have anything like that for LOU?
I am heading there August 5-7 for a training weekend and looking at hotels.

Thx!

Congrats Adam.

I knew it wasn't going to be me. I never win that kind of stuff; however, ONCE I did win an opportunity at a race to carry a raw egg for the entire tough 9 mile trail run.  If it came back in good shape, which it did, I got 6 lbs of Godiva chocolate.  That was a good day :-)

First good luck to all who are particpating this year.

My question is I would like to particpate in 2012 and know the regristation is usually the day after, but is there a strategy to signing up online?  its like they tell you a time to signup and when you signup at that time its already sold out......wondering if any one had any suggestions so I dont miss out on next years race.....thanks

Actually this does not matter. I have been trying to find the link to the study that showed that a rear disc increased the stability of a bike (it was from Velonews Circa 2010-ish). I posted it here or on Slowtwich within the last year but can't seem to track it down.  Also there are some disc's that can create forward lift propelling you forward depending on the yaw angle. ALWAYS ride a disc (or disc cover) unless the race says you can’t. The stall angles (the point in which the wheel becomes no longer aerodynamically beneficial) are pretty hard to hit.

Where a bike gets sketchy is the front wheel. I am now a little bigger than three years ago, but I have a Zipp 1080 that I will not ride because of two close calls. I have been riding for a long time and my comfort level ends at about 88MM’s in the front.

CUBE- Nice! I sense your MOJO is increasing.

Anyone- I swam 2.4 miles in the pool today. I wanted it to be an open water swim, but the water quality in our lake has been compromised by heavy rains and farmers' fields' runoff. The water in the pool was so clear, I had to remind myself not to breathe when I was face down. The swim went well and was good for my confidence and for simply gaining strength to cover the distance. I hope my next 2.4 mile swim is back in the open water.

My intention is to ride 100+ miles tomorrow. I'm a little nervous because my Achilles was quite inflamed after my attempt at running this morning, and I did something weird to my knee at physical therapy of all places. I'm hoping a good night's rest will calm both of these issues enough to ride on. My intention is to use my road bike this time so I am more likely to ride more patiently. My GURU has a knack for prompting me to attempt to go fast every time I'm on it, and this isn't my intention tomorrow.

Good luck to those of you who are racing this weekend. May the water be calm, the wind be at your back, and your feet be light to carry you home.

Check out Ironman Live at Ironman.com Sunday, if you want to catch some live footage of Ironman Coeur d'Alene. It's pretty cool watching these events. I usually check in periodically. It's fun to see the pros, but very interesting to see the age groupers cross the line. I'm always amazed at how many first time IM athletes are in the 10-hour range. Wow!

Peace...Sam

Nice job on the swim, Sam.  I'm a little jealous as I'm only allowed to swim a very minimal amount right now per doc's instructions.  I'm having an issue with my subscapular area.

Good luck on your 100 miler.  I got 112 on the bike yesterday - it was such a beautiful day, too.  Everything seemed to work well and I think I did a good job with nutrition.  I just need to get more organized ON the bike with the nutrition.  I got time :-)

I hope everyone's weekend is going well.

Had a 100 miler planned for today.  Woke up to pouring rain, thunder and lightning.  Decided to do 50 on my trainer and hope for the rain to clear.  Luckily, it passed and I was able to get the other 50 in on one of my favorite routes.

**How the heck do people ride 100 miles (or more) on the trainer!?!** Lol.....I barely made it through the 50 and don't know if I could have made 50 more if the rain hadn't cleared.  Kudos to those that do, dang that was tough!

9 weeks......!!
