Kirk - sorry to hear about your back - not being able to do the things you want is super frustrating - hang in there.

Russ - I love Austin - did you make it to SXSW?  I was there a few years ago for spring break and the weather, food and music was awesome!

Muelen - congrats on the swim PR!

I RAN TODAY!!!!!

for 3 minutes at the PT's Office - she had me run using a midfoot strike vs. my normal heel strike (which is very painful when I run) and the new gait really didn't bother the heel - if I don't feel pain tonight or tomorrow I will try again on Thurday and slowly increase from there. The midfoot strike definately felt different like running on my tippy toes- hadn't planned on changing my running style, but if it works I am all for it. I will keep everyone posted!

Congrats!!! great to see you running again!

Had another good day here. Though, I really wish I could swim here at work and run when I get home! It's soooooooo nice out. But, there's no pool at my gym in the city so I have to get the treadmill work done here and swim at the gym near my house. Swimming is going great for me lately! I did some speedwork last night and fit in a 3000m workout into 59min and some change!! I think that's the first time I fit in 3000m in an hour.

Tonight is computrainer class! Hopefully, my frustration on the bike doesn't continue. I put my PT wheel with trainer tire on my race bike and I'm bringing that tonight. Maybe, bringing the big guns to class will help. Lets hope they just don't make a big bang!

Awesome news about running.  I hope it works out for you and you can get past this deal.

I was there just before SXSW - my company had to move everyone out for the week because all the hotels were booked or very expensive.  There was a lot going on in preperation for it though.  Very cool city.

I hope that the PT works to get you back running.  I am guessing that changing your gait has to be a challenge to over come what comes naturally.

Think positively!  It will be interesting to find out if the PT numbers match up to the computrainer.

Great job on the run and the swimming!

It will be interesting - not at all natural for me. If there ever was a time to do it - now is it and may even save my season.  Luckily I have a reminder if I heel strike!

Out for another run on a cool crisp morning here in CA.  Should probably do something other than run, but the thought of spending any time on a hotel recumbent turns me off to that idea.

What are the rest of you doing today?

I, too, would opt for the run! This morning 60 Min Bike - Warm Up 20 Min... 6 x 5Min TT! 2Min Recovery between intervals!

Just cruising through to say hi, crazy work schedule has made it tough to get on BT much but my workouts are doing all right.  Tonight have a 45 minute bike followed by 30 minute run.

Awesome job getting your workouts in with a crazy schedule!!!!!

Workouts today for me were 1 hour of weights and 1/2 hour on the trainer.  Slowly increasing distance and exertion level on the bike! Tomorrow swim and PT.

Got a nice brick in this evening.  18.82 miles on the bike @ 19.31mph followed up by a 4.26 mile run 2 a 9:37 pace.  I'm still not very fast on the run but it feels like it's getting better.  Only 60 days until my first HIM. And just in case you were wondering Ken, 227 days until IMFL.

Nice job, Ann and Robin! My schedule has been screwy too.

OWS for me at lunch today. I switched my breathing pattern from bilateral (breathing every 3rd stroke) to right side only. More air seems to be working much better for me. Go figure. Track workout tonight. I finally got a Power Tap for my bike this week. Ugh. I've got a long, long way to go...

Hope everybody else is doing well.

Good call on the breathing switch Steve! The best part of knowing bilateral breathing is the ability to breath from either side and adjust for race day conditions. I wouldn't worry about early PT results, takes a bit to get an understanding of the numbers. Good work!

Nice work Anne and Robin!!

Steve, one thing my swim coach told me, when he had me switch from single side breathing to bi-lateral was the importance of a balanced stroke. I know some people are pretty balanced without bi-lateral breathing, but if you find yourself veering off to one side or under rotating on one side of the stroke you may want to re-think the switch.

Had a good couple of days here. Yesterday, I got a good run in the morning and went golfing. Tuesday night I had a great computrainer class. Finally, felt like I was getting somewhere on the bike! Tonight will be a power workout on the home trainer and a run if I have some extra time.

Great workouts everyone!

I have a swim scheduled for today and I really need to do a 500 or 800 yd test and am trying to psych myself up for it. ughh!

As for breathing on the swim - I am a dominant right side breather only and it works for me.  I do practice breathing regularly on the left so that I am comfortable with it, but it just has never felt right. Though I am a right side dominant I don't have a set breathing pattern and varies depending on the exertion level.  High exertion - long distance I usually breathing every stroke - I find it helps with shoulder rotation, rhythm and of course getting enough air. Whearas high exertion - short distance I breathe only 1 or 2 times per 25 (I can breathe when Im done Wink) Don't get stuck with any one pattern - it is much better to be flexible and adjust to the current conditions.

I like to breath every stroke when I'm really swimming hard too. I'll end up "winded" if I don't.

I generally mix it up with breathing patterns. Most of my swims are in open water and sometimes you just can't breath from one particular side for one reason or another. So I'm forced, in a sense, to only breath from one side or the other.  The benefit is that this can come in very handy during a race.

Good points on the balance and rotation.  I used to breath exclusively to the right (I think), then when training for IMFL in 2010 I spent several weeks just learning bilateral breathing just in case the golf was choppy (it wasn't) I could breath away from the chop (it also helps with bright sunshine).  Now I feel just as natural breathing to either side and it becomes more of an issue of intensity and how often do I need to breath.
