Scheduled rest day for me today. BUT, since I will be traveling for work tomorrow I am doing Wed. workouts today and taking tomorrow off. That meant back to back swim days...3500 yesterday and 2700 today. Easy run tonight and then a rest day tomorrow...yeah!!!

What's everyone else up to?

Randy

I rode my "old" tri bike last night because I needed to get in a ride and the new bike is still all tricked out from Sunday's race. The new bike is so much better. I didn't realize how nice the Specialized is until I went back to the old one (which by the way is still a heckuva nice bike).

I am back in the training grind. I am still a little weary from the weekend but as I move in to the IM training phase of the season I will have to remember that being tired is part of the reality of training for long distance triathlon.

Work has been a lot busier than the schedule appeared so that is getting in the way of training and sleeping time. If only I could win the power ball and retire to a life of training.....

Here is my race report from the weekend if anyone is interested. Nothing earth shattering. A few typos and grammatical errors-sorry.

Jason - Congratz on another race well done!

Ran 3 miles this morning and just finished an hour on the trainer with a trainerroad.com workout! Glad that I am not feeling sick anymore! Hope you all get a good night rest. Another day to workout tomorrow!

Jason - good job on the race.  I too have had to take a dump in the woods(:  I recall watching the horse races in Florida where we decided to place our bets on the ones that we see taking a dump pre-race.  Seemed to work! Are you excited for football at the Big House?

Had a good bike/swim yesterday.  Nothing yet today, still may try for a run if I get my work done!

Hey everyone.   I've enjoyed the race reports.   Nice job to all racers!

I'm utterly exhausted -- I've been working 15-16 hours per day and just fitting in training as possible (or not).  Sorry that i'm not as active as I'd like to be -- the last few big workouts of IM prep plus beginning of school year are killing me.  After this weekend I begin taper and I'm actually (contrary to previous years) looking forward to it.

Hey everyone!  Looks like we made it to Friday. Anyone racing this weekend or have big training plans?

For me I have a swim and run today, run tomorrow and a short brick on Sunday.  Will be keeping an eye on Issac and hoping he ends up somewhere other than here.

Have a great weekend.

A really nice swim yesterday. I didn't really want to go but I didn't really want to miss it either.

15 x 100, all right at 1:30 with a 1:45 send off and it really felt pretty easy. This is faster/easier than 100s usually are for me. I had been struggling a month ago with a 1:50 send off and 1:45 was suddenly OK yesterday. This gives me hope that the stroke changes are working, albeit slowly. Consistency, consistency, consistency with slow steady progress is what I always preach. Sometimes I need to remind myself.

No racing this weekend. It does look like I will be able to squeeze in another Olympic in about three weeks and that I will be doing the Detroit Half Marathon in October. Both races are on post call/overnight shifts sot we will see how my performance is on little sleep.

Jason-that's a nice swim set.  Always nice to have a good day in the pool and see improvement.  Any one thing that has seemed to "click" in helping your swim?

Hey everyone -- still crazy around here.  After today most students will have been to class one time, so lots of the 'bugs' should be worked out.  I couldn't get home until 7:30 last night, then hit the trainer from 8:00-1:00am.  Yeeha!

Nice swimming Jason!

I forgot to mention:  I ordered (and it came in yesterday) some of the Ironman Perform drink mix.  I've used Heed in the past, but since my recent stomach issues, it wasn't working so well for me.  Plus, Perform is what they'll be serving on the course.  So I gave it a try last night on the trainer.  It's a little strong, but I was definitely able to stomach it even after hours on the trainer.

Anybody else tried it?

I am working on several things. One is just adjusting where my hand goes in the water-I had been reaching across midline out in front with my right hand. Two is really trying to catch the water at the very front of my stroke by pointing my fingers toward the bottom of the pool immediately. Three is really workinng on getting the early vertical forearm and not dropping my elbow. If I really concentrate on keeping my elbow high--and I think of trying to keep my elbow from going no deeper than six inches below the surface--it really helps me. It gives me a "visual" to concentrate on. I can definitely feel it much more in my lats and core when I swim this way which leads me to think I am doing it better.

Michael. I have used Perform before. It seemed about like all of the other sports drinks out there. Until they starting adding in protein and starfish pollen and things like that they all seem pretty similar to me---sugar, water, salt and some flavor. But then again, I was the guy with the GI melt down at my last race so what do I know......

Anybody else get nervous and slightly frightened about a big workout?  I've got one tomorrow and I'm already feeling it.

I fear/dread my big bike workouts more than anything else in training. Especially the ones with the long intervals at threshold. I don't know what is worse; thinking about the workout or doing the workout.

Hey, guys! My computer's working at the moment! May not be working later so just wanted to jump in and tell you that I'm always inspired by your training and race results. I'm running. Got a team together for a 60 mile relay race. All women. Some triathletes, some soccer players, and some straight up runners. Should be fun! Our team name is "Mixed Nuts".

I'm almost certain at this point that swimming and biking won't happen till the husband gets home, but I'm hoping all the running will at least get me to a comfy tri' training weight. I don't want weight to be an issue for the training or for XTERRA 2013.

Have a great day.

Definitely!  I get anxious about tough workouts. Like Jason, the longer hard intervals are always intimidating since I know it will hurt and I question my willingness/ability to push through the interval. Today's run was fairly tough. Warm up then 4 miles hard at pace you can maintain.. I know those 4 miles are going to hurt....especially today when I went out too hard and did the first mile @7:05.....last mile really sucked.

But, I think these long tough intervals really help both mentally and physically come race day.

Good Morning,

I got a 24 mile bike ride and 3 mile run done. I am feeling pretty good but running is still my #1 weakness.

I always dread running workouts. I don't know why! Even 3 mile runs always hurt and I really have to fight to actually start the workout. For example I got up at 4am to go for a 5 mile run. I had a cup of coffee, checked my emails, went to the bathroom and so on ... Finally I am getting out of the door at 5am and I only have time for a 3 mile run.

I don't know why but ever since I ran the Cowtown Marathon in February I put running on the back burner.

I'm back after a stressful week. Now if we can just get through the first week of school then perhaps everything will calm down. I did an International distance race today. My race results were not exactly what I wanted them to be. I really can't remember the last time that I've been so upset over my results. I think its time to start thinking about only doing duathlons. Oly and International distances have always been difficult since my swim times are so slow. There was no way I could make up the time on the bike and run to offset the swim time today.

I have the same issue with Olys, Rene.  The swim just puts me in too much of a deficit.  I've toyed with the idea of becoming a duathlete, but (a) there are very few duathlons around here, and (b) there is something about tri that just keeps me coming back.

A BT friend of mine struggled with swimming for a long time and recently made huge gains in the pool, to the point where he is competitive on the swim (always was on the bike and run).  This gives me hope.

I guess what I'm trying to say is "I feel your pain".  And if you go for dus, I think that's great.  I could very well be in line right behind you.   But I'd also encourage you to keep trying as long as the spark of interest is there, no matter how much effort it might take to make it a flame.

Just got back from a 7-mile run that was one of my best ever. I felt great the whole time, and really went fast for me. I was hugely surprised at how well it went, considering I did a 50-mile ride and 3-mile brick yesterday morning with Nate and some other local guys. Hopefully, this is all that training paying off!

Edit: took out my stupid mistake...

Jamie - Do you mean a 50 mile ride? If not than I would be impressed :-)

I am ready to get on the trainer for an hour trainerroad.com workout ... maybe a short slow run later tonight.

I hope everybody has a great end of the weekend!
