Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Mike, looks like a well thought out schedule! Ha, be careful about touching that credit card....it's likely on fire Hey Jim, good to see you! Joe, are things getting back to some semblance of normal for you guys? Samantha, how goes life and training? Not sure what my problem is, but I'm having trouble finishing my long runs...which aren't even all that long yet. Last week it was supposed to be 14, did 12. Today goal was 15, did 12.5. Basically, everthing hurts (feet + recurring glute med issue), and by the end I'm convinced I'm doing myself more harm than good and quit early. Today I started off nice and easy because I really wanted to make sure I could finish it. Heart rate stayed nice and low. I'm hitting the total miles for the week on my plan (42 this week). But I'm losing some confidence given two long run DNF's in a row. Blech! |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Added a new 'decoration' to my bedroom wall. Just above my alarm clock on the table near the bed I've hung a 8.5"x11" paper with the following in bold red type -- "You can quit if you want, no one else will care. But you'll know for the rest of your life". Its from John Collins, the co-founder of IronMan. Figured it would be a great reminder at 4:00 AM, when I'm getting out of bed to shut the alarm off, of why I'm standing there at 4:00 AM. ![]() MD |

Member![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Carol - If you are completing your weekly milage, then you should look at the bright side. That continuous monitor seems to be picking up some important info. You have done the long distance before and you will be ready come race day. You have some nice and acheivable goals, perhaps the trail run took a little more than you though. Mike - Twi HIM's. Nice! Power is back slowly getting back to normal. Working in some swimming now that things are opening again. |

Elite ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hrm Carol. Lets see, your monthly run totals have gone 58, 80, 100, 140 and on track for 180 so far this month. That is a pretty significant build. You might want to hold steady without increasing distance for a couple 3 weeks or take a double rest week to help your body to catch up. Basically last month you doubled your number of increased miles from the previous 2 moths and this month you are increasing by the same amount. Remember to look at the big picture, your body needs to catch up. Feel free to do some low intensity for 2 weeks, possibly drop a shorter run for an extra rest day or just take 2 recovery weeks. Healthy is greater than nagging injury. I have been adjusting my adjusted plan daily for the past 2 months. It isn't as comforting, but it is what it is. Take care of you so you can get your body healthy then build slowly from there. You can do a marathon on 140 miles per month. Yes 180 is better and 220 is really nice, but sometimes the body needs a break. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Joe, so glad things are returning to normal for you. I can't imagine the extended power outages, not to mention the damage itself. Thanks Steve. Hrm is right, but yes, those numbers tell the story. I've thought the plan I'm using might be too much too soon, and my body seems to be confirming that. Pretty sure I have the beginning of achilles tendonitis (pain like a bruise when I press on the back of my rt. heel where it attaches) and aggravation of an old arch injury in the same foot. Fairly mild at this point, but really don't want to make it worse and be out for a long time. Today is a rest day anyway, so yes, time to reasses. I definitely find comfort in a specific plan...but none of them are magic bullets. Thanks for the encouragement to re, and re, and re evaluate when needed. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Has anyone in the group installed new pedals? Just wondering how difficult it is, and if you needed special tools. My old bike (on trainer now) has pedals with SPD on one side, and flat on the other. I now have road cleats on my shoes that fit Shimano 105 type pedals, so need to make a change if I want to clip in on the trainer. |

New user![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Mike, I love the quote. Carol, as always Steve is right. I've learned this over time My right foot is swollen for no reason, so I'm stuck biking in my basement. Oh well. I'm started to lift weights a lot harder now that is the off season. I'm now weighing 187 pounds, and want to get to 175 by New Year's day. I'm eating 2000 calories a day, upping the protein to 200 grams, cutting out the junk, and trying to hold on to all of my muscle while I lose fat. |

Elite ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Carol all you need for the pedal switch is a wrench narrow enough to get in there to turn the stationary part counterclockwise. You can probably google it for pictures or youtube. Sorry about the foot. I am resigned to the trainer for the next 6 months. Knee bugged me at 8.5 miles this Sunday. Shoulder still sketchy. The body needs a break, oh well 3 more weeks ish. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Changing shoes today -- the outside of my right foot has been sore the past week, and think it may just be my running shoes have reached the end of their lives. Breaking in a new pair tonight, and will run in them very soon to see whats up. IF the foot keeps acting up, I'll just ride the bike more often and give it a rest Good news -- just found out I am in for the NYC Tri next summer. should be a fun time. Swim in the Hudson, bike up the West Side Highway, and the run is around/through Central Park. Can't wait! Will be my first Oly distance race. Doing a 1000 yd time trial at masters class on wednesday. need a base time to register for the swim meet on 12/7. I'm already getting nervous about the meet -- first time ever doing something like it, and lets face it, I'm still a real novice swimmer. Even if I DFL the race, it should still hopefully be fun |

Elite ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() It is a good idea to keep track of how many miles you have on your shoes. A given pair of shoes may last 250 miles while others last 350 to 400 miles. If you have over 250 miles on a pair of shoes and are having unusual foot, knee, hip issues, it might be time to swap out a new pair. I buy 5ish pair a year to covery my 1500 ish miles run per year. It is time to start looking for shoe deals a bit early this year. For whatever reason supplies of last year's show are way lower than in previous years. As I hope the case is with Mike, as you shift into a new pair of shoes the aches should go away over the next week or two if it was the shoes. If you ignore the shoe issue it could turn into something more long lasting. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Larry, sounds like a good shift of focus. But having one foot swelling sounds...not so normal. Maybe have a doc look at it? Mike, sounds like an exciting season ahead for you! OK, swimming in the Hudson is not so appealing, but the rest sounds fun. Steve, thanks for letting me know the key tool re: changing the pedal. Yes, you tube is my friend! I do think rest is also our friend, though we tend to treat it with contempt. Hopefully all will hold together for you enough to enjoy the race, and then coast for a while. I've been trying to understand why I felt so good running last year, and not as good this year, and have to wonder if it was partially at least the forced down time I had last year with the sprained ankle. Samantha, getting worried about you girl. Don't make us hunt you down! Joe, hope the storm recovery is getting better! I've been wondering about shoe mileage, so glad you brought that up Steve. I track the mileage using the BT equip tracker, and have just over 250 miles on the current pair. Really thought it was a too early to replace them. But last pair I bought played out early as well. My ironman/runner podiatrist told me they were definitely dead when she looke at them at 240 miles. Same brand I've used for a while now, but "new and improved" technology in both of them for this year. Have to wonder if it is really improved, or just designed to go kaput sooner so we spend more shoe $$'s. OK, off for a run after resting two days. Going to listen to the Eagles "Take it Easy" on my ipod |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() went for a run at my usual early AM today. Somedays are certainly better than others, and today was an "other". New shoes felt good, but now my left hip hurts. Don't know if its shoe related since the new pair are exactly the same as the prior ones, but my foot does feel better. It also started pouring out about a mile in, so I had that goin' for me, too ![]() |
![]() ![]() |
Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() had a good swim this AM which I think is helping my left hip feel better. Still a bit sore, but nothing like yesterday. I'll likley do a ride tomorrow AM instead of a run, and just do the run on Friday instead to see how it feels.

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hey Mike, your "flailing" looks pretty speedy to me! Sounds like you are really going to have fun with this new challenge. And at least you can't swallow bugs in the pool! I don't so much get the "you work out too much" thing from people any more. I think those who know me have come to expect that my activity level is just part of normal. It's funny, I've had a couple of "regulars" from the park ask me why I'm not running when I'm just out for a walk with the dog. Or they express concern if they haven't see me for a couple of days. I don't really know them other than to say hello, but I guess it's nice to be missed! After two days off, ran 8 at "whatever feels good" pace yesterday, and another 4 today + a little strength/core work. Next week was supposed to be a cut back week, so I'm sort of using that as my guide for this week, but running all miles easy. Planning to get new shoes tonight. Missing Samatha posts! |

New user![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Mike, now that I've lost over 110 pounds, I get "you're too skinny" a lot. And I still weigh almost 190 pounds. Of course, this only comes from overweight people. I also get a lot of comments about my working out too much. There is a lot of truth to seeking out like minded people, like we all have on this forum. |

Elite ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hrm, after taking a week and a half off of swimming to try to give my shoulder a break... it is worse than it was last week. Which means that I may not be doing the HIM championship after all. I have until ya tomorrow to decide if it will magically heal up in 2 1/2 weeks to the point where I can swim 2200 yards on it and then bike 56 miles. The answer is probably not. Sigh. The biking may still be agrivating it. Which means that I probably need to stop everything cold for 4-6 weeks. 8(. |
![]() ![]() |
Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Steve -- sorry to hear about the continuing health issues. Maybe the 4-6 weeks will be just the right thing for you to heal up and be ready to move into 2013 healthy and ready to go? |
![]() ![]() |
Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Ugh, Steve, so sorry that the shoulder is not where it needs to be. Yes, there will be silver linings, but for today it just really sucks. Larry, yeah, jealousy is ugly. But sometimes it turns to motivation and then action. You never know who you may be inspiring. Ran in the new shoes today and wow, what a difference! My old shoes only had 290 miles on them per my log, but I also walk in them some that I don't log (like before/after every run), so really more than that. Also didn't hurt that today was one of the most perfect running weather days I've ever experienced. Planned 8 miles easy turned into 10 because I didn't want to stop! |

Elite ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Good news is that I was able to land Athlete of the Year for Hits at the HIM level. So that will just have to be enough for this year. Was hard to not run during lunch today, not so hard to not bike before dinner

New user![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Steve, congrats. Carol, I keep track of miles as well. My wife does not quite understand how I need a new pair of shoes, when my "old" shoes look new. But she's getting there. I am getting my bodyfat tested today in a machine called a BodPod. It's supposed to be very accurate. I'm a little nervous, but excited because I will know how much fat I need to lose. |
![]() ![]() |
Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Congrats Steve, and very well deserved! Does that involve a prize or free race entry for next year? Larry, next time try a trail race....your shoes will come out looking like they need to be retired whether they do or not Trying to figure out how long my long run should be tomorrow. I've been stuck between 12 and 13 mile LR's for the past 6 weeks with two failed attempts at 14 and 15. Mentally need to get beyond that to feel like I can ramp up for Cowtown full in late Feb. Tried to hit the reset button this week with 2 days off, all miles at feel good easy pace (currently at 27 for the week), and new shoes (feet/ankles much better). Recent mileage history (TTL for week/Long Run): 33/12.5, 36/13, 28/12.6(trail race), 29/12.5 (5K+10K "races"+add'l miles), 38/12, 41/12.5. Steve, any thoughts? 14 or 15 sound reasonable? |
![]() ![]() |
Elite ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I would probably go 13 or 13.5 and if your legs get buggy drop to a walk and finish the distance unless in pain. That way you still get the ditance in but don't stress out your legs. I think that in addition to doing a big mileage build like we talked about, that the trail run took more out of you than you realized. Take that with some aging shoes and you get that overuse/fatigue stuff going on. Hopefully you have enough rest to complete 13 or 13.5, but just walk the end of it or jog walk if need be to get it done. Then up it by 1 mile next week or 1/2 mile if need be, you still have some time, not a lot but some. The main thing is to stay healthy. Let me know how it goes. Gona do me some sleeping in tomorrow with no bike ride gona be sooo wierd. |

New user![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Bod pod test came back in. I'm at 12% body fat. It was so low I talked him into doing another test, and the 12% is the higher of the two. I still wasn't convinced so he did skin caliphers, and it came back 11.9%. I think all that is left is flabby skin around my stomach from carrying an extra 110 pounds around the last 15 years. So I have 170 pounds of lean mass, and 23 ish pounds of fat. Weight loss is over. It's now time to maintain. I'll post a picture of the finished product soon. I think I've lost 20 pounds since I last posted a picture this summer. |
