good hill workout Squshy !

Only 8 days left for me till my first tri and counting down fast ! Any first timer advise for me ? I have just been doing some light workouts this week so I don't go crazy, it's hard for me sit still. I guess I am doing ok because I lost another 3 pnds at my weigh in tonight, so not sitting around on my taper too much I figured.

We finally have some sun out ...the weekend is going to be in the 80's ! WOW, real sun with wamth too !

hope it holds out for the next weekend and the race!

Set up your transitions and run them at race day pace.  Clothes go on different when you are wet, and nothing goes as pictured.

I set up my transition area in my garage, get in my swim gear, shower and head to "T1".  I go around the block once and then into T2, and run a few minutes.

It's not really a workout, but it lets you do the transitions in context.

GL!

I was planning to do transition practice this weekend, including shower or bathtub before T1!

Here in Calgary it looks like we will also have a beautiful weekend.  And like Gloria, I hope we get good weather for my tri in 2 weeks.

My T2 practice is a no brainer, since I bike in teh shoes I run in. (I'll get the cool clips next year)

I am off of work in about an hour and a half;  from there I am riding 13.5k home and then doing somewhere between a 2.5 and a 5k run.

8 days until first 5k race

15 days until first tri.  800m-30k-5k

It is also different biking in wet shorts as well as water possibly running down into your sox therefore biking in wet shoes.  All depending how much you dry off in T1.  Consider if it is a sprint tri, we may be running in wet shorts too.  Practice these transitions in the exact clothes you will race in.  I threw on some bike shorts last week for a run and I thought I was running with a sofa!  You get the idea.

This is great practicing the T1s and T2s!

Great advise on practicing the transitions, thanks! I will be doing that tomorrow for sure. Tomorrow's weather is predicted in the 80's F ...crossing my fingers for a repeat of the same next weekend : )

I feel like there is so much to prepare and not much time to do it, I guess that's normal for the first Tri ?

Have a good weekend everyone !

I also need to work on my transition. Thanks for all the info. One other thing to have on race day is a checklist. There is so much stuff to remember so I make sure I go thru my checklist before I head out the door.

Sooo Bike shopping was so exciting but very tiring. I tried 2 bikes at 2 different bike shops. I went on about 30min rides each time except for a 1 hour ride (I was lost). I loved the Specialized Ruby Expert '07 (it had all the up grades) and since it was a 2007 it was on sale!!! It was the first bike I rode so I wanted to try others.

The one I want to love is the Cervelo Team soloist. THe seat adjust from a road bike position to a tri bike position angle (2 bikes in 1 ). The downfalls are it is all aluminum (heavier) and I want to ride in a more hilly place to see how it rides. So tom. I am hoping to take to the hills!

I will let you know how it goes.

Kristina, sounds like you are having fun bike shopping! Let us know how your test rides go this weekend.

Terry, Good Luck in the MTB race tomorrow! I hope your race is fun and your legs remain cramp free!

I had an incredible day today! I ran a local 5K. One of my goals for this season was to finish a 5k under 10:00/mile, but I didn't have any expectations of doing that today. Well I finished in 28:29, about a 9:05 pace!!! Placed 16/21 in my AG and 363/750 overall. To top it all off I won a $25 gift certificate to the local running store as a door prize! I have never won a door prize and I have never run sub 10:00 pace before (even when running for the portapotty!)

I was so giddy with excitement I went and bought my wetsuit this afternoon as well. I got a Quintana Roo Ultra Full. Can't wait to get out and try it in open water.

Hope you are all having a wonderful weekend!

Good work Tim.

Kristina, I am envious.  I hope I get to buy a new bike nest year.  My 1980's Raleigh is good, but...

-------

Anyway, I took my new Exterra Wetsuit for a swim in Lake Erie today.  Only did about 300m (getting the feel for conditions).  The water was cold and it was strange swimming with something hugging my body so tightly.  2 weeks until the first tri of the year. (800m swim)

Congrats Tim on the great time in your race, someday I want to be that fast too

Invigilator- Great picture, how cold was the water.?..that is the one thing that worries me for the swim next weekend...freezing during the swim

Kristina- how is the bike shopping going? it's got to be so much fun !

I practiced my transitions today, they need more work lol, so I will do it again tomorrow.

Keep having a good weekend everyone !

Ditto to what Gloria says.  Everyone is having a great weekend.  I took it easy today due to a bit of overindulgence last night.  (I deserve no pity!)  Tomorrow I may be cycling the course for my tri.  I'll probably add a run at the end.

Great job on the 5K, Tim!  You're just going to get faster.  And congrats Invigilator for swimming in Lake Erie.  Brrr, I'm sure!

Tracy

eta - fell off my bike yesterday while attempting to do transitions on the grass.  Road bike not meant for grass:  learned my lesson!

I don't know how cold it actually was, but I would not have been able to do it if I did not have a full wetsuit.  My hands feet and face were pretty cold.

If I don't go for a ride tomorrow, I might go back for another swim though.

I definately need to get a few open water swims done, as well as some transition practice. Yikes, only two weeks left!

Well less than one week left...I agree Tim....yikes!

I think I have the shifting figured out somewhat anyway on the new bike, just going to be doing some light workouts, transition practicing and getting things ready for Saturday this week. I just saw the weather for the week its supposed to rain that day oh well living here what can I expect, it's always changing!

Have a great start to your week everyone !

Sounds like everyone had a nice weekend.  I had a humbling race; no cramps due to some concentrated Hammer Perpetuem.  16 miles later, I finished 11th out of 12 in my AG (40-49).  I thought I was in wicked, killer shape.  Oh well.  Sport class is very humbling.  I finished in 2:08:22, the winner of my AG finished in 1:31:11.  Yikes!  All we can do is our best.

Good work on your race T.  Finishing is an accomplishment on it's own.  How far ahead of the last place guy were you?

Have a good week Gloria.  Don't get too worked up or freaked out.  The goals first time out are...

1.  Don't forget to pack all your gear.

2.  Have fun and stay safe.

3.  Finish.

That's in order too. Cool

Good advice!  The long term forecast for June 1 here in Calgary is rain also ...

Congrats Terry on your race!  The tough part about these races with less attendance is it's easier to place in the bottom (but also in the top).  My 10K had 235 in my age group.  My tri will probably have 20 or so (and it is probably one of the larger groups!)

Tracy - In the sprint tri I'm doing on Monday, there are 13 females in the 45 - 49 AG and 14 males.  I'll be 46 in Aug of this year, so that puts me in "the 46 by Dec" 45-49 AG.  They cap this race at 400 participants and it sold out a few weeks ago.  Should be a lot of fun.

Inviligator - I'm not sure how far ahead of the last place finisher I was.  I got really disgusted when I read the results.  All we can do is step up to the plate and swing; give our best and see how the results fall out.

Ol' Timmeh! rocked a 5k this weekend!

Anyone else competing on Memorial Day weekend?

Hello Everyone!

Thanks for the kind words, but I wouldn't necesarily say I "rocked" or was "fast", as the overall winners finished in about half of my time! I'm really the only person I'm racing though, and I'm having a fantastic time doing it!

Terry, don't beat yourself up on your time, you did a fantastic job and you would have severely kicked my butt if I was there!

Sounds like we are all getting really close to our first tri's! I've been trying to get my transitions organized but have a ways to go. Has anyone made or come across a good race day checklist to use, to help preclude leaving home without some important piece of equipment?

Tim - nice job on the run. Got love posting a PB in a race.

Kristina - good luck with your bike search. It's always fun when you know you're about to get something really nice.

Terry - sorry your race dind't go as planned. It plain sucks when that happens. I placed 3rd last in my AG for my first Try a Tri last year, so I definetly appreciate how it feels. Nothing else to do but get back on that horse and try again.

Invigilator - nice job on the swim. I also donned the wetsuit for the first time and took a test swim. Wow, was it cold. My hands and feet suffered, but it was my face that took the real shock. For everyone with a race coming up, make sure you plan on warming up for the swim so you aclimatize to the water temp. Once I got going it wasn't too bad, but it was still cold!!

I also noticed that my left shoulder found it a bit harder to swim with the suit on. Will definetly get in two more swims (even if one is the day before race day) to try and feel more comfortable in the suit.

Hope everyone one had a good long weekend (for the Cdn's).
