Smooth, asphalt, chip & seal? Smooth (in spots), asphalt (I've heard of it), chip & seal (lots of it). I have never had an issue with the IMCDA roads. There is a lot of chip-seal on the course but on race day you can ride in the car wheel tracks so it really is not the same as riding 112 miles on a chip-seal shoulder. My biggest concern is the condition of the north loop after the winter. In the past there have been lot of pot holes but they always get fixed by race day. We have had more snow than usual this year so I still have not riden this section yet this year. More snow last night, so I might not be able to ride it this weekend. Good info. Please let us know how the roads are if you get a chance to go out! |

Regular 83 Houston, Texas | Subject: RE: Ironman Coeur d'Alene : Official Thread Its warming up nicely here. A lot of us in the south have our first race this weekend. There are pretty big HIM's in Galveston and New Orleans. This should be a good early test of my fitness level, or a horrible warning. |

Nothing quite like basically taking a week off of real training (in addition to no pool access) for relocation for an Air Force TDY assignment (Wyoming -> Alabama for 6 weeks). I'm following BT's beginner IM program -- will that past week off affect me too much? All y'alls' 100 mile rides scare me... I haven't gotten near that on the BT program!! Is anyone else on this program? Or has anyone else used it with good results? Any reassurance would be grand . |

I've also not been able to put in the training volume I need. Work, family, nasty colds.. it all ads up. I'm on the BT intermediate program and I haven't gotten in any 100 + rides yet either. Here's what I figure... train what you can, do your best, that's all you can do. With less than 2 months left, train smart...
Anyway, I'm starting to wonder what I signed up for! |

Follow the plan, race your own race and have fun! FWIW, I haven't done any 100 mile rides yet either. I've done a few in the 80 mile range, but none up to 100. You also can't sweat about missed workouts. You'll never get them back, so just move on to the next workout! |

I've been really working on the bike because I haven't run one step since Valentine's Day due to a strained hip flexor. So I panic when I look at everyone's tremendous running mileage in their logs. I echo everyone else: Follow your plan, do your best and have a blast on race day |

It looks like a beautiful course! Is it as hilly as the pictures make it look? I've been fortunate enough to ride a lot of hills here in TN, but for some reason it looks hillier there. Great job on your riding...especially in those temperatures! |

Great job on your riding...especially in those temperatures! The hills on the back half of the course keep coming. I don't know your definition of hilly, but for this flatlander they were a challenge on the second loop. For those who missed workouts, don't worry about it and keep moving forward. There is no magical training formula. I am starting to get excited for June. For those counting, 76 more days! Edited by captantony 2009-04-05 6:21 PM |

Expert 783 Spokane, Washington | Subject: RE: Ironman Coeur d'Alene : Official Thread A couple of things I learned on my partial ride of the CdA course last weekend: 1. If you can't see the end of a hill behind the trees, it's probably not a good idea to just let 'er rip. There is one place with a really sharp right turn that is just out of sight behind the trees at the end of a great downhill. I would expect volunteers telling racers to slow down right around there. 2. If you can see the top of one of the nasty short steep hills on the course (maybe on English Point?), it's not necessarily the top. It is entirely possible that once you crest that little rise that the hill continues for a bit. |

Expert 1207 Liberty Lake, WA | Subject: RE: Ironman Coeur d'Alene : Official Thread I agree, there are two corners that can be race enders. N. Lakeview onto N. Rimrock. As you head down hill into this 180 degree right hand curve the pavement on Lakeview is rough, so your front end will be jumping around a little. Then as you take the corner the pavement is sloped opposite of the curve, this makes it very easy to over shot the curve and end up in the ditch. There is also a 180 degree right hand curve at the bottom of the first downhill on English Point Road. There is not a lot of cross slope on this curve so it can be hard to hold your line as you go around. Also there is a gravel driveway near this curve so if it has been raining there can be dirt/sand washed into the curve. I rode the north loop on Sunday and thought most of the road was in good condition. There are some potholes on the slow uphill sections but the downhills all seem to be in good shape, with one exception. The last downhill on Landcaster sucks, there is a lot of potholing and aligatored pavement in this 1/2 mile section. Hopefully this section will be in better shape come race day. |
