I can't remember exactly, but I think this past spring/summer/fall I had beaucoup de chaffing on the bike...on the trainer (which I have on a block that raises the bike about 2 inches, if that) it's legit pain/soreness.  My DH went to a bike shop that had him sit on foam and they measured him for a seat.  It's an hour away but that may be something I'll want to look into.

Thanks for the supportive messages.  I'm glad to say I made it through a full work week and managed to stay on my training plan which fortunately included a glorious day of rest.

Sounds like you all have tons of bike expertise and could use your advice on a bike purchase.   I am all the way in now and shopping for a reasonable priced bike. Any suggestions? I'm 6'0" with a 32 inseam. Does that equate to a 54 or 56 cm frame?  I have 4 sprints and one olympic tri scheduled and registered from end of March to October.  I did some searching on eBay and Craigs but ???

From what I learned trying out bikes, it can vary from manufacturer to manufacturer.  A 54 in one may fit while a 56 in another fits the bill.  Also the difference between a road and tri bike can make a big difference.  In general I would think that a 56 would be more appropriate for you.  I will tell you, I am one of those people that goes crazy trying to find the absolute best deal out there.  When I was bike shopping, I was very close to buying something online to save a couple bucks.  However, after a lot of searching, I found a bike shop close by with great prices and great service.  I would think with the economy being how it is, you might still find a great deal on a 2008 model out there somewhere.  What I did was visit every bike shop I could.  Even if they didn't have anything I liked or could afford, I still learned something by talking to them and trying out what they had for size.

It may well be worth the trip.  I don't know if you saw it, but there is a thread in Tri Talk about seat adjustment.  As usual when the bike guys get chatting, there is no consensus, but you may find something you haven't tried before.  Here is the link to it.

I would second the comment on visiting as many local bike shops as you can.  It is a great time of year to get a bargain and by visiting multiple shops, you will get a sense of who is interested in a long term relationship and who is just interested in your $$$.  Make sure they spend the time going over the fit and sizing.  Ideally they have a trained fitter on staff that will assist with this process.  There may be a charge for the fitting initially, but it is usually credited back to the cost of a bike, assuming you purchase one from them.

I buy a lot of accesories on line, but I am a strong beleiver in purchasing the bike local.  It is nice to be able to walk into a shop and have them know you.  You are comfortable asking questions and comfortable that they will give you a straight answer.   Plus, I think when you take the bike in for maintenance or repairs, I get treated a little better.

Good luck and have fun!

Agree 100%.  Another reason for visiting more than just a few bike shops...  I find it interesting that some shops seem to fit me for the size frames they have in stock, no matter how bad the fit actually is.  I ride a 58 but was fitted for a 54 in one shop (they didn't have any 56's or 58's in stock, but did have four 54's on the rack).  I probably do fit a 56 in some frames, but I can't imagine a 54 I can ride comfortably.

Overall, I find bike shopping to be at the same time one of the most exciting and frustrating events in life.  Have fun!

Great advice on bike shopping. I don't have a lot of experience, only one purchase but I did shop around local bike stores and test rode 4 different brands before buying. If they don't quick fit you for a test ride, move on to another store. Each bike had a different feel. I did internet bike reviews on the models I was interested in to see what buyers thought of each and asked what the warranty covered. I decided on Trek 1500 63cm frame in 2005. I had a wheel crack at spoke after 6 mo and they replaced wheel at no charge. They also ask me to come back after 30 days for a free minor tuneup and fit adjustment. I needed a shorter stem and they replaced it at no charge. I was happy with bike and service. A link to some tips on bicycle.com.

This is a great time to buy 2008 models. I have been looking at tri bikes the last 6 months, saving to pay cash by next fall. Good luck, very excited for you, let us know what you buy and what you based your decision on.

Oh. My. God.

I pushed myself hard enough at the race today that I starting dry heaving after I finished!!!!  So much for REP of 2-3!  I picked my rabbit and it took all 6 miles to chase her down.  On the bright side I dropped 7 minutes off my 10k time.  I am also getting closer to finding a comfortable position for my seat.

Hey guys...

Well this weekend did not go so hot.  I thought i was making progress on the back/leg issue but this weekend it got BAD.  I got in a good warmup walk (a walk, how depressing) but could not run, it just kept tightening up.

I did my pushups for the 100 challenge, just have not logged them yet.  After the push ups I could not even sit the leg muscle were so tight and pushing on the nerve.

I'm beginning to think it's Piriformis syndrome (the hamstring and glutes are so tight that they impinge on the sciatic nerve. Took the wife out to dinner for her BD yesterday and I could not even sit.  I had to stand and walk around between the salad and dinner course.

I'm seeing the chiro 3 times this week and the PT again on Wednesday. I hope to have this licked by the end of Jan.  If not I'm not sure I'm going to be in the shape I want for for St. Ants in April.

SOOOOOOOOO frustrating.... (thanks for listening to the whiney rant)

Happy b-day to your wife!

So what is everyone working on this week?  Any races coming up?

Me, I am going to continue my training schedule and start swimming again tonight.  I have a 5k on Saturday, which should be fun if the weather man is accurate with his forcast.  It says we aren't supposed to get much above 10 degrees Thursday - Saturday!  I need to move South!

10 degrees Ken. Is that livable? It was 35 yesterday morning. I volunteered at the USA Fit marathon in Houston for 4 hrs and froze my feetskees ! The Houston marathon and half is this Sunday so I'll be out there with the halfers. Hope it warms up some. The CTS meal plan was followed 90%, went out once for breakfast and dinner; way more carbs than I'm use to (60%); may have dropped an lb. Will give it a month's try at least.

Today I went for a nice easy 1 hour run.  I recovered with no problem from the 10k this weekend...except my heels hurt.  Weird??  I know my running shoes are due to be retired, but I'm not sure why else they'd be sore...little sore in the shoulders because I put a little effort into my swim this weekend, but I'd rather have sore muscles then achy joints, yanno???

If it's the bottom of the heel it might be a little plantar fasciitis, inflamed because of your race. If it's the back of the heel it might be an Achilles tendinitis. Hopefully it will resolve soon with some rest and maybe some ice.

Was there a lot of ice on the road?  When I ran the race on New Years Day, the bottom of my feet, but especially the heel was a bit tender for a few days.  I just figured it was because the road was snow covered and frozen, therefore uneven causing an unever foot strike causing the discomfort.

It could be the shoes if the cushioning has broken down and is wore out.

I have another thrilling week of running on treadmills, riding on trainers and hopefully making it to the pool at least once.  We average like 72" of snow a year, well we are already here for the year.  In the summer, the place I live is like triathlon heaven with living on a lake and wide open country roads for biking and running.  In the winter....not so good unless you are into ice fishing which I am not.

Can you do any crosscountry skiing? I had a friend in MN and he said the only way he kept his sanity/conditioning was winter sports, and he did cc skiing when possible.

Gotta tell you, my lunchtime run was a sunny 60 degrees.  The South does have a few advantages.

Tomorrow I'm headed to Bloomington, IN (IU) for 9 days where cloudy 20 degree days are more common.  We suffer together and laugh together.
