draykus - 2009-01-21 5:13 PM We could do a percentage of improvement in pace.  We can pick a workout within the next week as the base for comparison.  We could do this for running, swimming and cycling & then set a date maybe 3-4 weeks from now as the final day.  We can update in our daily logs as to progress and after the last date we'll have one winner for each category...... thoughts?

Like a 5K once a week and everyone post the progress - or a 300 or 400 yard swim that everyone does once a week and post the time??

Sure,  I don't think it's necessary to set an exact distance though.  I think we are all at different levels.  As long as it's a realistic goal and not measured over a super short distance.

i'd be in for that,, it might be difficult since many of use are training for different things.
we could also do one based on time,, so many S/B/R hours for the month either individually or a combo of any of them..

A lot of us doing IMKY are already in a weightloss challenge, well sort of..

My goals for mostly short and long term this year, are just to get constistant with morning workouts, keep calorie intake to 2300-2600 a day depending on that days workouts, make my workouts a quality one, instead of going through the motions just to say I did it. Oh yea and this spring is increase bike power.

I know if I keep losing 2-3 lbs a week that I'll get faster on the bike and run, by increasing my bike power I'll get faster also on the bike.  swimming I just need time in the pool and to make sure I'm pushing each set.  As long as I keep a constistant workout schedule I know I'll be faster, then again it helps to be slow like me so I have more room to improve.

How is everyone doing with getting in the workouts they were aiming for

Maybe we could do a swim challenge one week then run the following week, etc.?

I like that idea - to break it up - do a swim, then a bike then a run challenge

I will concede the run - my weakness - give me the swim and bike - now how do we do the bike since the weather - kinda of hard with trainers. (48 year - beer drinking, mexican food eating Male)

OK, Sir Gary Lord of BS Triathlon Guru - I did my run today - it says to keep heart rate 20 bps below LT level - OK - that is about 175 to 178 - I start running and bang up to 166 - walk a little and then start running bang 169 after about 100 yards - how the h#$$%%ll does this heart rate thing work - I mean I run and my heart rate jumps, for me to do todays run would mean a walk.

Help please - I am Grasshopper Sir Master or anyone chime in.

When I use my HRM I just run comfortably for at least a half mile (sometimes it takes a full mile) and ignore the the HRM.  Until I get warmed up and into a rhythm it jumps all over the place, after that it is very steady.

Does it level off at some point after you get in a rhythm - I know it will go up on the beginning of the run but mine jumped up and stayed up - honestly I felt great

depending on how warmed up I am the first couple of minuets are my highest readings then it calms down, you are basically going from an at rest state, to active very quickly so you HR jumps lots.  (this is why at the start of a swim people have a hard time).

I'd wait a 4-5 min and see if it levels off, and if not hmmmm... this is the "issue" with HR training.  it could be your LT is actually off, or you are going at a pace that is just too fast and yea, you literally have to slow down.. lots  but to be just 20 bps off should put you in Z3 or high z2 so I doubt you would want to slow down..   while I don't always list it in my workouts I'll actually do a little 3-4 min slower jog to start out as my warmup then hit the start button on my garmin, then do an actual warm up where I keep a slower pace then after about 10 min total I'll look at my HR or pace to get it where it needs to be.  Does that make some sense.

think like a car, and you are going from sitting in the garage to High Speed in a few seconds, your engine needs to pump lots of blood everywhere so the rpms are flying to keep up.. once it gets settled, it's smooth running.

My LT is around 165, last nights run  I think my HR  was 178 for the first couple min then it jumped back to it's normal 120's

Hey guys,  Thanks for the support.  After having to do some work today and a late day yesterday I'm finally in Austin (4 hour drive) and getting ready to race tomorrow.  The blister is deflated and should be ok for tomorrow once I tape it up.  The weather says 31 degrees at the race start with little wind.  It will be cold, but I'm excited and ready to go.  I'll post up after the race.

So...do we have a referendum on a challenge for this week? I'm starting to get mid-winter doldrums. Let's get some competitive juices flowing!

Oh yeah...kick some arse today, Alex!

What are the various opinions about this fourth week slowdown in my plan? Is this really necessary? I don't feel I need to "take a break" right now.

I know some plans have a base build up then a slow week and then build up again.  Which plan do you have.

Looking at your logs I'd say just go this weeks training,,, it's not really a let down from what you have been doing,  which has been a nice steady build up btw, this weeks down week is about the same as what you did last week,, so I'd say hit your target for the week and be ready for next weeks increase..

Okay, so I've been doing pushups & pull-ups for the last few weeks. I have trouble working with weights because of the wrist surgery and I can get some strength training this way and increase my wrist mobility with the pushups. The question: does anyone feel up to a Pushups/Pull-ups Weekly Total Challenge. We could call it the "PP" Challenge or something. LOL. Just for fun? Any takers?

I'm out for any challenges this week, and I may be incommunicado as well:

  1. I have my exams (one on Wednesday and one on Friday, so any spare time will be studying and answering sample questions) - I'll keep you updated on how I think I did; and
  2. My best friend's wife is due with their second child this week (hopefully not on Superbowl Sunday).

Plan for the week is stationary bike during lunch today for 1/2 hour and either 1/2 hour first thing in the morning or longer after exams on Wednesday and Friday, and stick with the Program (1/2 hour treadmills during lunch on Tuesday & Thursday).  I plan on upping my jog split of the Program from 1:00 to 1:30 and walking from 4:00 to 6:00, which will drop the number of splits from 6 to 4.

No time limit...3 sets maximum daily for each exercise...strict form...daily totals for each exercise maintained in training blog...starts today and continues through Sunday the 25th. Winner announced for each exercise on Monday the 26th.

Oh yeah...no chin-ups (reverse grip), dead-hang pull-ups only!

Any other suggestions, Grady? Anyone?
