3M Half Marathon & Relay

Overcast
Total Time = 1h 55m 34s
Overall Rank = 1621/4140
Age Group = 30-34
Age Group Rank = 147/213
Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 4:30 and grabbed a cup of coffee. I had already prepared everything for this morning last night. I ate some oatmeal and then took a quick shower. I taped up the blister on my foot and then got dressed. Headed out the door at 5:00 sharp.
Event warmup:

5 minutes of jogging around the parking lot to keep somewhat warm as it was freaking cold.
Run
  • 1h 55m 34s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 08m 49s  min/mile
Comments:

About 1 mile or so into the run I started to get really bad shin pain again. I have not had any pain for weeks and it chose to come back this morning. Around the same time I realized that I really had to pee, so I ran to the side of the road and hit a bush really quick to relieve myself and then pressed on. I pushed through the pain it started to let up around mile 4 or 5. Boy was I ever thankful for that pain to go away. About the time the shin pain went away is about the time my blister flared up. But I did not care nor did I stop or slow down. It just feels like a painful rock in your shoe. When I hit the 10k point I was at 57:09 with a 9:12 pace. I really kicked it up on the last half and tried to push harder. The second half went by really fast for me and I felt great. There was a really long hill on the last half but no problems there. Before I knew it I hit the finish and pulled in a 8:29 pace for the last half.
What would you do differently?:

Not run 12 miles and get a blister on my foot 3 days before the race.
Post race
Warm down:

Looked for my dad for about 45 minutes. He missed me coming throught the finish and I did not see him either. He had my dry clothes but I had the key to the car. After freezing my butt off for 45 minutes I hopped on the shuttle bus and headed back to the car. My dad showed up 10 minutes later.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Shin pain right out the gate and a blister on my foot.

Event comments:

Good race, my only critique would be to have some recovery food or drink at the finish. If it was there I missed it.

Congratulations on a great race.  Love those negative splits Laughing.  Is this a PR for you?

I would guess that the cold temps and hard road surfaces probably had something to do with your shin pain coming back, treat those legs nicely for a few days now.  Good week to get some pool time in.
