The infamous OWS...you will be fine on Sunday.  Good idea to get a practice one in before the race.  Build your confidence!

jford2309 - 2009-05-01 10:50 AM

I got my first wetsuit swim in the pool this morning, and it felt so nice so be so bouyant! We tested the lake temp also and it said 71! Surprised me it was that warm already, so Sunday is going to be the 1st OWS of the season. The first one always makes me nervous, but I am glad to be able to get some in before my race on the 17th.

Also I tried out a tip I got on putting on a wetsuit, some of you may know it already. I took 2 plastic bags and put them over my feet before sliding my wetsuit on and it went right on my leggs, then I did the samething with the hands and it was amazing at how easy it slid on. I still had to work it with some adjustments, but what normally took me 20 minutes, only took me about 10 minutes.!

I'm totally in on this May challenge! I don't think it should be that hard, since my totals so far are pretty measly...

Nice idea!!!!

Robb - 2009-04-30 9:49 PM

Well, thats the end of the month!  Hope everyone got in what they had hoped :D

Here is an open challenge for May.  Since we are finally getting into some nice weather where most of us are, I challange everyone in this group to beat Aprils totals in r/b/s.  Obviously stay safe, but lets see if we can each beat this last month, and at the end of May I will post up everyones differences between the months (based on your logs).

71 for the first OWS?! NICE!!! I'm pretty sure my first will be in the lower 60s!

So, folks...sorry I've not been checking in on your training this week.  I was so busy working on my thesis (I had a draft due Thursday).  I will work on catching up with you all this weekend!

On the topic of OWS, let me pose this question to the group,

What do you guys think of training 100% of swimming in open water outdoors?  Obviously it cuts down on your training season, especially where I am, but I think I could get in the water in the next couple of weeks with a wetsuit.

I think it would be an interesting way to train.  For me, there is small lake 50feet from my back door, as well as lake Huron 1km away, and the Georgian Bay about 5km the other way.  Meanwhile, the closest indoor pool is at the YMCA, 1.5hr drive from here.  Just a thought.

Robb, I think you train in what ever places that are available to you.  If I had more access to open water I would MUCH rather swim in that than the pool.  The pool is nice for getting technique down and doing drills, sprints, etc, but to just go out and do a nice long swim I would prefer the OW.  All my races are OWS anyway so I would prefer to have more experience in it.

I say go for the OWS!  Why spend extra time and $$ to get an hour and a half away to train?  *!HOWEVER!* (and this comes from over 10 years in aquatics) I am concerned about folks who go out in the water by themselves.  HUGE, huge, huge, safety concern there.  So, the advantage at the Y is that you don't have problems with the weather, it's a little easier to keep track of distance and the lifeguard is there for assistance if you get a cut, scrape, cramp or worse.

Other then that, I think you'd almost be at an advantage with all the OWS you plan to do.  Good luck!

Ya I wouldn't go out alone.  I am pretty afraid of the water in general, and if I go out alone I would probably chicken out 10m into the swim.

I am going to buy a new wetsuit next weekend, and maybe try a couple small shallow lakes next week.

You can try hugging the shoreline.  Also you can get someone to watch you from land.  Wear a bright colored swim cap so you are easier to see.

I ended up taking it easy on that short sprint triathlon I had today, but I did not mean to.  I was doing well through the swim, bike, and transitions and then cam the run.

Since it was a pool swim, there was no mass start so you spent most of the time on your course by yourself.  I got to the water stop on the water course but made a wrong turn, and had no idea.  (no one said anything either)  I saw other people ahead of me so I thought I was going the wrong way, and was soon at the finish line.  I was like that was quick!  I ended up finishing the 5k run in 14 minutes, ohh noooo! lol

So I ended up only doing half the run :-(  Kind of annoyed/pissed that I messed up like that and didn't do the full distance, but the my main goal was to practice and I did get that.  I also learned to make sure to make sure I take a look at the course map ahead of time.  At least this wasn't one of the big races I was preparing for, so it serves as a lesson :-(

At least I have another sprint in two weeks to make up for this one, and I will not make the same mistake.  Other then that I was having fun, and it felt good out there.

^ 14min 5k, nice!    haha sounds like it was a little unorganized, but oh well.  You got the transitions in and got to be in the race experience.  You can do a 5k on your own time to make up for it :P

Robby, congrats on getting that first one out of the way!  That is exactly why we never put the A race first.  Good job though...I didn't see a race report yet.

I am up for the challenge but my OLY is this month so my numbers may bite!

I compleed my first OWS today. Water temp was 69. It felt really good to get out there, so much different after having a year of races under my belt. The temps did not bother me at all really and I used ear plugs for the first time. (Anyone else use ear plugs?)

Anyways, if I could, I would train only in open water, but it is just not possible.

Hey all! Happy Monday!

Here's a challenge... let's see if EVERYONE in the group can get in TWO swims this week... I've been checking your blogs and some people need a little mojo to get in the water. Tongue out

Robby I can't believe no one said anything to you!  it's great to get the race in before one of your A races.

With all the OWS everyone is doing I want to as well.  I just bought some ear plugs and took my wetsuit out of storage, so I guess that's step 1.  The next step is finding a place near me that will allow swimmers right now.  I'm getting a little anxious about my first tri at the end of May mainly because the water temp (55-59F), the water temp right now is around 52F so hopefully it heats-up a bit!

I did the exact same thing on my first sprint last year!  There were people ahead of me so I was just following them.  The next thing I knew I was at the finish!  (a mile short of the 5K)  I was upset with myself too.  (If you notice one of my short term goals is to complete a whole course!)

I don't have easy access to OW so I'll stick to my pool.  Throwing in some practice OWS when I can.

I also doubt my mileage (SBR) would be more this month because I have a race in May.  We'll see though.

I stuck my feet into the Georgian Bay today.  I lasted about 5 seconds before jumping out, as it was coooooooold!!!!  I don't think I will be swimming in that one anytime soon.  I will post some pics up later tonight lol

Based on how bloody cold the water outside felt today, I am going to spend 2hours in a pool before the end of the week.  I am driving down to my moms for the weekend and she has a pool at her apartment that I will splash around in.

*edit*  Apparently the surface temp of the water today was 38F.  I suppose even a wetsuit won't be enough to keep me alive!

And this is the lake behind my house (literally 100ft from my backdoor to the shore).
