ransick - 2009-12-23 1:25 PM Thoughts on a Giant Defy 1 road bike?  My LBS has a 2009 in my size that I should be able to get a good deal on (like under $1200).

I don't know much about Giants, a triple is heavy and has more adjusting involved, good for novice climbers, sems like a fair price, I always recommend Ultegra or better. Check this out,

Thanks, I'll check it out.

BTW, what is wrong with Gatorade?  That's what they hand out during my 1/2 mary so that's what I train with on runs longer than an hour.  I drink that plus eat some GU.

Nothing wrong with gatorade or GU for fuel at race pace or higher intensity and for a 1/2 mary, thats what its designed for, it is necessary to fuel consistantly so that you provide energy for the later half of the race which lasts more than 1-hour because your body has a difficult time breaking down foods at higher intensities, however its not an instant return on your investment, I meant that for low intensity work its added calories that dont get enough attention to get used, when trying for weight loss its better to condition your body to burn fat and carb stores than to add unecessary calories that wont get used, when I am trying to loose weight I try to burn more calories than I take in, I dont replace them as I burn them, Nuun and Zym will replace electrolites. Does that clarify? Gene was specific about weight loss. I was not trying to confuse you.

Rockford IL is getting ice right now so we are going to wait until noon to take off from St. Louis.  That means I get an unexpected swim in, yea!

Today's my last day of work until 1/4.  Happy holidays everyone!  As someone who lives far away from family, please take time to appreciate it if you get to spend time with yours this season.  Yes, even if they drive you nuts. Sealed

Hope everyone is having a great Christmas!!!

Went snowboarding in the mtn's yesterday(kind of a silly comment) but we usually ski hills back home.  Talk about a workout, I can barely walk today, after pushing yourself off the ground1000 times WOW.

I went snow boarding in CO once.  I was so sore, it wasn't even funny.  I was horrible at it too.  I went back to skiing.

Hope everyone had a great Christmas!

I just wanted to throw out the next topic for discussion, its an important one, Heart Rate Training. When I first started I did not use it, now I only do swimming without it. It has allowed me to focus on my form and technique while training daily, using a heart rate monitor is a convenient way for me to follow a program exactly while knowing how hard to train.  Heart rate monitors take all of the guessing out of how hard to train on hard days, and how easy to train on active recovery days. I use a cheapo Polar monitor, an FS3 that works just fine for me, although there are many brands and features, I choose not to get complicated because I like to keep my workouts simple and short and I dont really need any additional feedback. I can set my range of heart rates so that if I go above or below that range my monitor will start beeping to let me know. Getting your correct heart rate ranges are a bit more complicated so I will refer to the BT standard HR protocall testing, afer you have done it once it becomes simple, this is also an option for brand new triathletes. I use the spinervals DVD that takes you step by step.

There are many training programs that use heart rate, they also use RPE (relative percieved exertion)which can be used from heart rate ranges. Heart rate can be set up for each sport on your BT log, there are a number of different formulas to use, I use the Lactate Threshold method (LT), take your  LT number from your testing and enter it in this formula. When setting up you zones go to settings on your settings, then go to training log settings, then follow these instructions.
This is a two part article that covers everything. Part 1, Part 2. I like using Heart rate training and will continue with each program I use, a power meter is also something I might use in the future, it calculates how much pressure is applied to the pedals during Bike riding, it is very expensive. I will typically do an LT test once every two months, as my fitness changes so does my heart rate ranges. When I first started my max heart rate was 149, now its 182, and dropps rapidly during intervals, thats what you want!

I had a great vacation in the mountains, even got snowed on a little (a cool deal for us coastal folks).  Managed to get in 3 really fun runs, thought it was interesting running on cold, somewhat icy roads in the hills.

Heart Rate:  I've been mostly using HR training, but have just used the basic 220-age to determine my zones.  I've been putting off doing the field tests because I did not have a HR monitor that could do laps or download data afterwards.  Now that I have a Garmin 305 I have no excuse.  I have to say, it frightens me!  The field test basically is a 30 minute sprint, right?  I'm not sure I can do that...  My one and only 5k race lasted ~26 minutes, and I barely made it.  How do you pace yourself for this 30min TT while running?  I feel like I have a solid enough base at this point to do the test, but that is still a long ways for me personally to run at an all out pace.

You want a hard effort, but dont kill yourself! Just remember, this is a starting point for yourself, a benchmark in a way. Give it a try and let the group know how it went!
I did it on the bike for my first test and thought it was hard but not impossible.  Just remember your heart rate will corelate with the effort you can produce now and that will be the effort to set up your training, I can promise when you get more fit you will be able to hold that effort longer and your heart rate ranges will totaly change. As I said I will check my LT every two months and adjust me heart rate ranges accordingly to fit into my training. Using the 220 method is completely guessing, although by random it may be close, its far better to rely on a field test to set up your training with.

Im thinking of doing the peach challenge for January, anyone else? It will be fun to make each day accountable for some sort of fitness, Abby always has a fun group! Abby has done several Ironmans and is another BT'er from northern California, I met her at a race a few years ago.

wow...I think I may be in the wrong place.

I just did a stint in Toronto with my wife for our 25th anniversary and accomplished a whopping 1.1km jog so far.  I got a new pair of Asics 3126 shoes, but I'm not even close to you guys....

hhrrrmmmm...  I may need to re-think this thing.  I'm so freakin' out of shape, it's retarded.
