mross - 2010-04-29 2:13 PM I start my program training next Monday for my ST tri in Sept. I am doing a 20 week program that has 2x equal work outs per week. In addition to the SBR, I will be doing a light P90x style strength and core program as well. I have joined a gym and have a few workouts under my belt (I'm sore) and have been riding a couple of days a week. Eating has always been a challenge for me so I have enlisted my doctors help and will be meeting with a nutritionist next week as well.

Wish me luck!

Totally! Good luck!

Need to throw any dietary stuff around let me know...

... the secret, in all honesty, is in repetition.

And definitely good luck doing the p90x stuff with SBR'ing. It's a beast to do so much

Well, I've got the time right now and I am taking the P90X thing very light.

But I have a question, what is the best way to deal with a sore hamstring.

So i have a question for you guys/gals, i am trying my best to work on my swimming when its not to cold. And i am finding that i am a way better swimmer doing the breast then doing free, but i am a lot fast swimming free.

do you people see others doing different strokes? should i concentrate on my freestyle more or just put more work into breast and see if i can get any faster?

Thanks for any input

great input on the main page... (so I'll steal it!) Let's see everybody's totals for April!

April's totals:
Bike:10h 55m 57s  - 153.42 Mi
Run:6h 47m 47s  - 41.89 Mi
Swim:7h 54m 03s  - 21200 Yd

Absolutely dismal, especially the run. This coming month should be better though!

Define/Clarify the difference between being a "better swimmer" doing breast, but being "faster" doing free? What is better? Easier? Sustainable?

Besides the "variations" of free (alligator / tarzan swimming in open water) I do not see ANY stronger swimmers use anything but free... towards the back of the pack, you will sometimes see some people use a different stroke (usually breast or backstroke as you can breath more often) but it is (generally) not competitive to do so.  It's not bad to have a fall back stroke, but if you want to be a faster swimmer, concentrate on free.

Just sore? Elevation, anti Inflam, stretching, Ice and foam rolling! It shouldn't be sore for more than 2 or 3 days though.

I think I know what you mean, and I was there when I started swimming too. When I started, I tired very quickly doing free, and wasn't even that much faster than my backstroke. I still expend way less energy doing the backstroke - I can't tread water for more than 10 minutes, but I can turn on my back and float around all day long for some reason. For me the secret was just more time in the pool, and really focusing on taking less strokes and trying to go as easy as possible. I had a lot of trouble finding anywhere between sinking and 100% effort on my free, but eventually I learned to scale it back. I'd try focusing on getting really long in the water, and taking fewer stronger strokes.

I’ll second that, the best thing you can do is slow down your turnover and stretch out.  If you watch the strong distance swimmers, you’ll notice their arms aren’t moving all that fast.  Freestyle is the fastest stroke because it is the most efficient (least effort for the speed).  When executed properly, the fastest stroke is actually butterfly, but it also takes the most energy, as well as technique. I would say focus on freestyle, but go ahead and mix in breaststroke and backstroke. It’ll keep your workouts more interesting and take some stress off your shoulders to avoid overuse injuries.  If you have the opportunity to get a swim coach or join a masters program, do it. You’ll get help with your technique and guidance for training.

Well, there'll be an extra hour on that swimming total after tonight's Friday Night Swim, but regardless, pretty pitiful. So I'm right with you on self-loathing, Chris. I need to step up the training in a big way next month.

April's totals:
Bike:8h 53m 25s  - 145.38 Mi
Run:6h 55m  - 48.48 Mi
Swim:3h 13m 05s  - 7350 M

I don't know if I'll have time to get my bike ride in tomorrow morning, because I'm driving up to Macungie Pennsylvania tomorrow morning for my big race Sunday. We're camping Sat night, racing Sunday morning, then partying all through the night Sunday. I'm gonna need the release/rest it after this one. 7.2 miles of running up and down a ski slope and obstacles in poorly prepared cardio-shape:

Bike: 7h 57m - 70.65 Mi
Run: 4h 53m 38s - 20.64 Mi
Swim: 3h 25m - 5750 M

Well according to you guys this is worse than "absolutely dismal" but I'm doing the best I can! Let's try to stay positive here.

Yea... sorry. I am still getting used to lower training levels time wise. In college, I was doing about 15-20 hours a week of training for rowing, so I'm still adjusting. Then again, I didn't do much outside of rowing and school, and now I sort of have a life, so that's new.

I suppose it's not bad for being new to the sport. I'm still going to try to up my time next month though. Thanks for the reality check.

Hello

i just published my TryCharleston race report.

I am happy to report here that my goal was  1 hr 40 min 30 sec

and I recorded

1 hr 35 min 6 seconds so I am pretty happy with the results.  I do think the run course was short but I just ran what the event had set-up.

I know I can do better as I have a many areas where I can improve.  I will work on these areas over the next 3 weeks.

Next Race  Charleston Sprint Series Race #1  in 3 weeks.

And thanks for the replys on my swimming guys, looks like i have to focus more on the freestlye and only use the breast stroke if i start having a problem during a race.

On a more embarrassing note i got in a fight with my bike yesterday and i am sad to say it won   i fell for the first time (i should say fell over).

April's Totals

I have totally done that before too!  Clipped out the wrong foot at a stop sign, fell over and then had to fight with the bike to get the foot still clipped in out from under the bike. All in front of random people in cars. It happens to us all and makes for a good story! Hope you didn't get too banged up!

Ahh welcome to the club. The really important question is... who saw you do it?

When I had my first tip over in clipless pedals, I was at a stop sign with about 5 cars right behind me. I was so many shades of red... it was great!

Haha yup I think it happens to everyone. I was all proud of myself for getting used to the clipless pedals so quickly- not five minutes, tipped over when I slowed down too much without unclipping. Luckily the only person who saw was a 15-year-old kid who couldn't have cared less. And I wasn't around cars- I'm still too scared to ride with traffic! I've been sticking to designated bike paths, but it really limits my options. Anybody else live in a busy area where it's not safe to ride with cars (or there are just too many traffic lights to make it worth your while)?

Congrats on your race Kevin! Also, like everyone said, don't worry about it Eric. I fell over in front of not only cars, but pedestrians as well. One woman gasped and called out to ask if I was ok. I just told her it happens and is common, which confused her long enough for me to ride away sheepishly.

Finished Tough Mudder Sunday. It was definitely NOT the toughest one-day adventure race on the planet, as billed. Parts were very hard, like running up a black diamond ski slop at (I'm guessing here) 60 degrees. Well really, walking and crawling up, but other than that, which was brutal, and the swim - AWFUL in clothing, shoes, and climbing gloves - it was really not much more than a mud run with some neat obstacles. On the plus side, I'm definitely sore today, which at least means I was using muscles I'm not used to using.
