I have to think that the military would be involved. So what happens with our armed forces during the outbreak? Do they mow down the zombies with all that firepower, do they set up safe zones, or are they overcome themselves? Sure, they would declare marial law but all infrastructure would break down because most of us are not going to listen anyway. There would most likely be the sectioning off of areas and lots of collateral damage as largely infected, high population areas are carpet bombed. This is another advantage of keeping it rural. If there are infections, hordes take longer time to travel so you are not overwhelmed all at once. You have a better chance of picking them off as they straggle towards you. One bad thing is that the undead won't show up on thermal optics. Then again, they are not shooting back either so this would be a fun time for most foot soldiers. (like shooting fish in a barrel) |

Renee, stop by the Sams club on the way to the rig and I will make sure you have a nice treadmill for the oil rig. I would hate you to lose your run fitness. For the bike, there are trainers on some Navy vessels. I'm sure you could barter for one. I'll high five you for thinking ahead and the 1st annual post zombie-pocalypse triathlon. ha |

Champion 18680 Lost in the Luminiferous Aether | Subject: RE: Important skills to have for the coming zombie-pocalypse If you are going to go with the oil rig option might I make a suggestion? With the movie track record of the military they will fare well in the coming conflict. You might want to bide your time and at some point commandeer an abandoned Navy or Coast Guard vessel, for the following reasons. A) Until your sailboat barter economy gets off the ground you will likely need to get supplies from land better to have an armored, self powered platform than to rely on just sailboats you will be safer. B) If something catastrophic should happen to your oil rig you can do mass evacuations with it and use it as a floating platform from which to fix your rig. C) Marauding Pirates, ala Waterworld!!!!! Again an armored, self powered platform will fare better against the marauders than will a bunch of wooden and fiberglass boats sail boats that are dependent on the wind. D) A good navy is vital to the defense of any water dominated society. The navy was instrumental in the battle of thermopylae (the 300 Spartans). It was also critical in the rise of many of the European Empires. Sea powere will be important from just a defensive standpoint. Good luck to you and your oil rig plan. Kate Future Leader of Zombie Cohort Omega (I have yet to give it a good name but that will come in time) PS Any of you who would like to join me on the winning side I will guarantee that your and your families will not be dismembered. Instead you will be important members of a large, well organized Zombie Cohort with many advancement opportunities, not to mention opportunities to perpetrate ruthless mayhem. In shape, smart triathletes make for fast, smart zombies, that oil rig and the rest of "civilization"won't stand a chance. |

(like shooting fish in a barrel) What is all this talk of undead? Zombies aren't really dead -- they are infected humans. They would have the same basic physical needs as the uninfected. They feed on live human flesh, breath air, and are vulnerable to trama. They are alive, so they can be killed. |

Zombies aren't really dead -- they are infected humans. They would have the same basic physical needs as the uninfected. They feed on live human flesh, breath air, and are vulnerable to trama. They are alive, so they can be killed. According to some the "zombies" from 28 Days Later are not really zombies. They are infected humans. They can be killed by a bullet to the heart or by drowning. http://ww2.zombieinitiative.org/node/361 However real zombies are dead. Clinically dead. According to World War Z, zombies do not need oxygen, their lungs do not function. The virus causes the nervous system to move the body. They do not feel pain. They are not harmed by damage to bodily organs (except the brain, spine and nervous system). They live until you separate the brain from the body (the head is still dangerous however) or until their body decomposes to the point where they cannot function. So again, depends on the type of "zombie". |

On your right | Subject: RE: Important skills to have for the coming zombie-pocalypse After finally having the time to read through all of this thread, I only recall one or two mentions of needing medical knowledge. I think that you guys should target a pharmacy right off to get as many antibiotics as you can, and other basic first aid stuff. Having a few Dr's and nurses on your oil rig/box store would be quite helpful too. |

Subject: RE: Important skills to have for the coming zombie-pocalypse Might this merry band of miscreants have use of a helicopter pilot who is also a graduate of small arms armorer schools as well as the Combat Lifesaver Course? Might be an easier way to get stuff to the derrick than having to worry about all that across the land stuff from the dock to the place you're looking to pick up supplies from. Just land on the roof of the grocery store. |

Champion 5376 PA | Subject: RE: Important skills to have for the coming zombie-pocalypse There is a group in PA who are politically active in terms of firearm laws. They have identified actual "sectors" of the state for a state-wide zombie response team. They have signature banners which indicate which sector they are assigned. It's pretty funny. I don't have one of those but I do have a Zombie Hunting permit sticker on the back of my truck. My kids bought it for me. |
