mav - 2011-01-18 5:37 AM Michelle, My daughter is a criminal justice major!!!!

What does she plan to do with it?

I dont think my daughter really knows what she plans to do, I am just glad she is in school

I am going with my son this pm to the ortho. I think he has a tear or strained achilles. He is VERY active and hard to tie down.

My knee is OK. I have a torn meniscus which I have been battling since July. I have not had surgery and I am trying to avoid it...but it may in the end...be what happens. I need to stay off the treadmill...it really aggravates it

Did an hour on the trainer and 15 mins of abs....done for the day

We are getting yet another snow storm!!!!

Hi guys,
I back from sunny AZ.  As we were leaving the airline announced the weather in Seattle, and then added " It's not to late to turn back and stay in Phoenix."  Great to get away from 18 days of rain and snow and run a marathon.

Here's my quick report - I'll won't be caught up on the thread until later tonight.  Cheers,

The race went well.  Course and weather were ideal.  First third was incredable.  Running fast and easy everything according to plan.  Middle third needed an extra gear but couldn't find one that worked and pace began to suffer.  4min off pace at the half way point.  mile 18 sucked. 2 friends who ran the half mary ran out of the crowd just before mile 20 and paced with me until just past 21.  Good friends are good for the spirit.  Keep them close.  Ran well to 23 and then struggled bad through 24.  Running to the next intersection and walking to lamp post and then running again to next intersection and walking to next lamp post.  Keep cramps at bay until 25.  Then it felt as if a weight had been lifted off my shoulders. 25+ passing runners again, having fun again.
26.2 Good race well run.

In retrospective: Nutro (gu/powerbars) and hydro(nuun) were good.  Cramps were easily managed (salt tabs night before and morning of race).  No chafeing (body glide is a gift from the gods and goddesses).  Knees, feet and calf muscles, my old injuries, made no unusual demands.  My training plan for this race had many more fast days and fewer 20 mile days.  I had lots of speed early but suffered from lack of endurance later in the race.  Possible did not taper enough. but taper was about the same as last full.

Looking forward to another marathon, but don't have another full on this years schedule.  I will return to AZ next winter to run the same course again and I am giving some serious thoughts to making my first IM, and IMAZ.

Yes,  I'm walking a little funny today.  Need to get on the trainer tonight and activate some endorphins.

had 2 great days, didn't ski yesterday, too snowy and windy. Walked from condo to town, no sure how may miles but spent the day walking around town. About 3 hours, Loved the snow. We got 26 inches here and today was awesome. Skiied about 4 hours of lots of powder, My legs are sore this pm and I am tired and satisified.

Met the water challenge yesterday, a bit behind today but may still finished the 75%.

I enjoy reading everyone post and hope all continue to train well.

Mark...I think there should be a study about mile 18 in Marathons and IMs. I have read many reports and they all have the familiar theme of mile 18, it generally sucks!!!! I wonder what happens to people at this point. What helped you get through this? Did you just have to slow down and get through it? I saw a lot of people who looked very defeated at mile 18 in my IM. Just curious as to your thoughts on this.

Terry, hope you had fun skiing.

We got another snow storm yesterday followed by  ice. We are in for another this Fri..UGH!!!

I went with my son to the ortho yesterday and he is in a cast for a high ankle sprain. I am so glad because my son would have tried to ski this weekend. He has a sense of humor and had a tie dyed cast put on. When he got home he went on you tube to watch a video on how to get it off....gonna be a long two weeks.

Awesome job, Mark!!!

I've been hitting the mark with my water. I have been trying to make a conscious effort to drink some right before eating and i've noticed a big difference in how hungry I actually am.

I went for a short run last night and while it was freezing it felt really, really good. I am really having a hard time figuring out when I am able to get my workouts in. I guess I just need to break down and set up the ole trainer, huh?! Honestly, I don't know why i've waited this long...

At mile 18 I have a number of different strategies to find _happiness_.  Not much science here but I need something to change the pattern without really doing anything different.

miles 16-17-18 You know you're in the middle of something big.

1.  Have I been keeping up with my electrolytes and hydration.  Drink
2.  I keep a special gu pack for this moment.  Normal fuel is gu tri-berry.  At 18 I consume gu jet-blackberry roctaine with 2x more caffene.  I also carry a very small bag of chomps so I can switch to something special.  Helps to give the mind something different to think about.  In the next run I'd like to carry expresso beans, or maybe an expresso cookie bar.
3.  Change music to a faster beat.

I'll do anything to get to mile 20.  Once I'm past 20, I'm on the home stretch.  I've done so many 6 mile runs I'm easily convinced at 20 that the remainder is just another 6 mile run.  It may not be as fast as a normal 6miler. but the distance is the same.  Of course 6 is almost 5 because every minute you think about 6 being 5 you're moving closer to 5. As soon as you're convinced 6 is like 5, you're at 5.  Everyone knows 5 is just like being at 4.  Try it- it's true.  3 is almost 2.  Everyone does 3 miles.  Of course there isn't much difference between 2 and 1.  1 is a normal cooldown.  Point_2 thats less than a lap at the track.   Before you know it you're over the last timing mat and it's over.  Breaking it down into smaller and smaller bits.

 Cheers

Happychick - 2011-01-19 10:54 AM Onefaller...didn't you have your tri this weekend??

Nope...  it's March 27th.  I did a "practice run," because while I don't care if I come in last place, I *do* care about finishing.  Now that I know that I can make those distances, I can work on doing them better...

the only way I can fail is to not finish...    and if I do fail, I'll just quietly slink off into the night, licking my wounds and taking the Pyrrhic victory of knowing my limits.   :~)

but that's not gonna happen, because I've got 2 months to improve.

of course, then I've got the "Warrior Race" (5k w/obstacles) at the end of May, and the Dog Days Sprint tri at the end of August.

I will not fail.  I will finish.

Just goes to show that IT IS all mental when you have done the training. I have had the exact same thoughts. I also use "stay in the moment" as my mantra. That keeps me from looking too far ahead. The last 5 miles of my IM marathon were my fastest because " anyone can run 5 miles" ...at least thats what I told myself...plus I was tired of GU and wanted food.

Again...congrats and great job!!!!

Onefaller, I predict you will finish and you will be suprised at how well you do...once the adrenaline kicks in you are always faster on race day!!!!!NO WAY will you fail. I have had the same worries each time I start a race distance, sprint, oly, half and IM...can I finish???? Each time I have lost sleep over the idea of not finishing. The first sprint I did, I think I did the course 6-7 times before the race. My first oly I drove 2.5 hours to do the course to be sure I could finish. It cant be done for the HIM or IM distance so I raced sleepless each time. My point in this is...if you have done the training , you can do the distance. You are doing the training...you will be GREAT!!!!

Sorry if you all are getting sick of my vaca, I just like to keep in touch and read all your post.
Had another powder day. snowboarded today, great time. Took a pretty good face plant and have some very sore
ribs tonight. I've been trying to stretch it a bit. Still hard to take a deep breath.

We helped push some cars out of the parking lot too.

Looks like tomorrow will be another powder day.

I guess I saw your test run You're right...you will NOT fail. You already know you can do it and as long as you train I suspect you will do better than you thought you could!

You're too funny Marianne ~ that's my line No it isn't set up yet but it will be and i'm suspecting tomorrow. However, i'm happy to say that I got my run in today. While it wasn't as long as was scheduled (was .80 mile short) i'm ok with it since I was pushing Sammi in her stroller!!

BTW, I love the push/motivation...i'll have to set it up now!!

Not yet Marianne but I am setting it up so that I can use it today!!

What does everyone have planned today? It is supposed to be my rest day but since I will be running around all day tomorrow I am switching days. Needless to say, today is going to be a trainer day.

As for water, I exceeded my intake yesterday and am on target again.
