I had an awesome weekend with my friends.  Exactly what I needed since we have about a month left of school and then people start going their separate ways.  I have more good news:  WE GET TO TAKE ENGAGEMENTS PICS IN THE STADIUM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  I'm so excited!!  I ended up telling James today since the weekend I wanted to go wasn't available and I wanted his input on what date we should go and what time.  He's really excited about it

Sorry I've been MIA lately ... dayshifts all weekend, K came home Saturday (and brought more jewelry with him - this time a necklace!) and I'm going through some crap with the neighbours (in a nutshell, we live in new construction <not my first choice, but was the only reasonable house available when I flew out here for 8 hours to buy> and BOTH sides are balking at building a fence - I know I'm going to pay for the whole thing myself, I can just see it) ...

So .. my lovely boyfriend and I stayed up chatting for 3 hours last night - just talking. About everything. And nothing. Some heavy things were said, some light-hearted things were said, it was one of "those" talks ... in the end we're still good - I have a weird feeling today but not a bad one. I don't know. It's hard to explain. Likely mostly because I can't quite put my finger on it myself. But as a result I'm terribly sleep-deprived, and going into nightshifts tonight. Suckage.

Enjoy the week, Crushers!

I'm feeling much better today than I did last week!  I just felt awful for the second half of the week, but I seem to be over it!  This morning, I was able to get a good lifting workout in, and I'm planning on a swim this evening

I have a dilemma ...

I am registered for an Oly June 18 - that's a Saturday. I am scheduled to work dayshifts Mon/Tues June 13/14, but have booked off my nightshifts Wed/Thurs June 15/16 in preparation for the race. I've had this time booked off since late February.

I was informed just this past weekend that I am scheduled to go on a week-long course in a city 3+ hours away the week of June 13-17. It's a Mon-Fri 8-5 kind of course, put on by the RCMP, and it's mandatory for everyone in my position to take it. They only hold it once a year, and it's my turn to go (along with 5 co-workers) ... we have to leave Sun night, spend the week in a hotel, and the soonest I'll be home is 8 pm Friday night. The Oly is early Saturday morning.

I'm thinking of emailing the race director and asking for a deferral for next year ... is this a cop-out? I just really don't want to race 12 hours after getting home from what I'm sure will be a VERY long and tiring week - sleeping (not sleeping) in a hotel, not eating right, being trapped with 5 co-workers I don't necessarily get along with and a bunch of strangers taking an exhausting and intensive week-long course ... it's just taken all the fun and and excitement out of the triathlon for me.

I have no choice in going - my holidays have effectively been cancelled.

What say you, Crushers?

TR, I wouldn't consider that a cop out.  If you hit traffic or another issue coming home you would get in really late after a week away and not have a chance to properly be prepared with your stuff let alone physically so that's a risk on the course.

I wouldn't think it's a cop-out!  If they let you defer it to next year, I say, go for it!  For this year, you could always find another Olympic race a few weeks later, wherever it fits into your schedule.  (Would you at least be able to take those vacation days you'd planned and move them to a new race date later in the summer?)

I think you should try to defer it till next year.  Triathlon is a three day event.

Day 1 = travel to tri destination, organize tri stuff, sleep

Day 2 = race day!!!

Day 3 = travel home, recover, laundry

Should try my allergies on for size:  everything BUT horses.  Yeah, those trips to the allergists office are rather necessary little buggars!!

Oh hai ... hey, I am completely up to speed on my title as Head Slacker ... I don't think I've even made it on to the spreadsheet

No worries, no way I could live up to my even-ridiculously-modest goals anyway. Durrrr ...

But in the meanwhile, I love living and moving among the great Crushers, and all our new friends, whether they elect to be Crushers or not.

How well-trained for it do you feel? If you're in ideal shape, if it were me, I'd do it, just for fun, and the last week is taper anyway.

However, if you're not, I'd def ask for a deferral.

Then if they won't give it to you, I'd go ahead and do it just for fun and experience. No pushing. Like ... a scenic experience.

Thanks, kids, for the feedback.

I have sent the RD an email asking for a deferral. There's just no guarantee I'll be back in time - it's a 3-4 hour drive just on the highway (it's a busy highway), plus city driving-time, even if I take my own car on my own I think the soonest I'd get home would be 8-9 pm and that's with no traffic issues and not going late on the course, etc ...

Yanti I don't feel physically ready at this point - if it were a sprint, sure, but an Oly is a distance I haven't done in years and because I'm racing absolutely covered in TriCops kit, I want to put in a good showing. I can't embarrass the group I race for!

I'm fairly certain I'll get the deferral.

I'm doing a super-sprint in May, a sprint in July, another Olympic in August, and am on an Oly relay team for September. So I still have stuff to do - this was definately not going to be an 'A' race to begin with.

Thanks team!

Morning All!

I'm sorry I have been awol for a few days. I didn't plan on disappearing without mentioning it first but I have been in Noosa for a few days hol with my Mum. It was fabulous but now I am back at work with more work than ever to do. I have to write a research proposal on malaria and T cells by Friday 9am, both of which are new topics to me (I work in infectious diseases and immunology but not those areas) and I am supposed to do the job I am being paid to do at the same time - busy busy busy!

I got to the pool tonight and realized my bathing suit was still home.  OOOOPS!  There is a Target less than a mile from the gym, I drove over there, found the least objectionable suit on the rack and bought it.

As always, your commitment to swimming way surpasses mine. On another note - nice excuse to shop - I have yet to use that one but I will log it for future reference....

I bought a new bikini on Monday but it was completely for bumming on the beach, nothing functional about it

I love dysfunctional swimwear! I mean, nonfunctional ... actually I often go OWS in it anyway, especially if it's a bright color. Sucks when the top comes undone, though. For me. Not my swim buddies, apparently.
