 ocean swim in.

PURPLE with envy!! LOL Although I grew up in a tropical/Caribbean island, it wasn't until last year that I did a real OWS in the ocean!!! OMG! There's OWS and then there's OWS in the ocean!! What a beautiful experience! Did 2 sessions, 2 hrs each, in 3 days in clear, turquoise waters! Saw corals and lots of neon colored fish! Needless to say, Cozumel will be my first IM Smile

Ocean swim in...Any chance I'll get to see those beautiful fish and turquoise waters in the san fancisco bay this june?

Probably not, but plenty of great whites ply those waters.

LOL. But if you make it out alive, you can have LOTS OF CHOCOLATE!! LOL

LOL, I found that a pull bouey has helped with the "afloat" problem.

It's all in the head (well, a lot it LOL)  I found keeping my head way in, with chin almost touching neck (i.e. imagine you're holding a tennis ball between chin and chest.) Then when I rotate, slightly, I don't lift my head; just move my head together with my body to the side I'm breathing; as if my body is in a skewer and it moves as one unit. Otherwise, any lifting of the head will sink the body.  Are you doing Total Immersion or high elbow catch?  I tried TI and didn't like it. I love HEC, but it did take some practice to get the breathing/sighting right without sinking.

I also train with Zoomers (fins.)  They help keep your rear upward and allows you to focus on the pull/catch. Not to mention that you'll feel like a dolphin on a sugar high with how fast you'll go Laughing. But, right now, when I use them I do it to focus on the PC and not on speed. So my feet movements are small.

??

This is why I can't do a tri in SF ... I'd veer off on the bike or run ... one time I saw a "Pizza, 3mi" sign during a triathlon and that's all I could think about for the rest of the bike.

Really good Chinese in SF, too! Also, some yummy seafood down by the Wharf which can be fattening or not, depending on how you order. But you absolutely have to indulge in a bit of Ghiradelli and sourdough bread. Then you can drive up north a bit and imbibe in some Champagne at the Korbel winery in Guernville. Mud baths up in Calistoga are pretty cool, too.

Yes - all of you , it is a sad fact, but I've never been to SF.  I've been to Japan, India, France, Germany, Singapore, Brazil, Canada, and all over the US, but I've never had a need to go to SF until now.  Going to spend couple days there for the escape tri, then drive south to LA to do Disney, Hollywood, Bev. Hills with the kidos.  All 5 of them - yea 7 of us going out.

Going to be fun having Jan, twin 18 year old boys (Jan's children) in a 15 passenger van with my 15,13,10 year old daughters for 45+ hours of driving.  Thank goodness for all the electronic toys that were not around when I was a kid.  Also thankful that we will be in wine country - although whine country may start in Colorado ("how much longer", "Jenna is looking at me", "I have to pee", and the ever fun one from my youngest "my butt is sweating - can we stop?").

@#$$#^%& - I challenged a friend at work to go do the incline with me next monday (another triathlete).  She upped the challenge and now has asked that we run through maintou springs to the incline and run back.  Adds about 3 miles and another 500' of climbing.  Grrrr.

i will keep you posted on the success of this "rest day" activity on Monday.

Don't forget to take pictures.  Sounds like it will be some fabulous views.

It's going to rain here for the next few days and I need to see what good weather actually looks like.  Tongue out

Breakthrough day in the pool today.  I've been doing all my workouts in segments of let's just say "not many" laps at a time.  Today, finally got the rhythm back to where I felt that I could have kept going and going.  A big relief as I was beginning to think it would take another month to come back.  I'm still very slow, very sloppy, can't swim very far, and in constant slight danger of drowning, but at least I'm much better today than yesterday.

I think the key for me is to be able to break through the first few hundred yards in a row.  I seem to have a lot of inertia.  Once that is overcome, things get much easier.

trainforacure - 2011-04-21 11:13 AM

I tried this today.  Didn't help at first, but it did remind me of a drinking game I used to play in college in which you pass an orange between people without using your hands.  Eventually, though, it did start to help.  Thanks.

Yeah, I've got two workouts scheduled on my "rest day" tomorrow as well.  I woke up to a foot of snow a few days ago and had to find someplace to put two workouts and ran out of days.  Now I find that my rec center closes for the week next week, so I'm scrambling to reschedule swims.

The logistics of training in Colorado can be challenging.  As I'm still getting going for the year, I still can't run or bike out of my house cause the elevation change to get back home is too great.  Another month or so and I won't have to drive to another part of the valley just to find terrain level enough to train on.  That said, I've heard about that stairs route of yours and I really would like to give it a shot... later in the season.

Have fun.

Hi Manatees!

John, you might just have to get chicked on Monday . Do it, have fun, take it easy(ish).

I've done everything I can to get our new cute manatee pic to show up in the team table, and of course it shows perfectly in my log, but no matter what I do to the HTML (really it needs to be re-written from scratch, it's a mess by now), the pic will not copy over into a forum post (or back into my own log, for that matter).

If any of you are HTML geniuses, I'd be grateful for a fix. Happy to send you the code (will need your e-mail, PM will not work).

Hmmm ... (I have one more idea to try)

Anyway, I'm visiting my parents in Jakarta, the capital (it's 1.5hr flight from where I live in Bali), but it turns out I'm the one who needs visiting--in bed with pneumonia. I get up and walk around a few times a day and try to breathe deeply, because while lots of rest is necessary complete immobility will make it worse. Suffice it to say I am miserable and I certainly could have taken it easier in the week before I left Bali, but, well, I'm an idiot sometimes.

I also really appreciate the Manatees chiming in with their experience and thoughts; for example, "Nothing new on race day." We really are all mentors/mentorees (Manatees) ... that rule (though I've broken it myself several times!) wouldn't occur to me to say because it's one of those things that has become obvious to me. That's one example of why we need all of you to contribute ...

Once I wore a new tri-top on race day. Because it was identical make/model/size to my old tri top, I figured it would be fine. I had forgotten to CUT THE TAGS OUT and boy did I and the skin on the back of my neck regret that by the end of the race!

Thanks for the table Yanti. We know the Manatee is there in spirit but we just can't see it, just like many things in life, eh?

Please take good care of yourself!

Happy Easter Weekend to all of you Manatees!!

Hey everyone - HAPPY EASTER!

Yanti and All - I had the same difficulties pasting the mentor listing into the forum that Yanti is having.  However, if you are having "manatee envy", try copying it from Yanti's page directly and pasting it into your blog.  I left clicked my mouse and highlighted 1 line before the table and 1 line after the table.  Then Control-C (for copy).  Then went to my page - clicked edit - and selected where I wanted the listing.  Then "control-V" (for paste).  The manatee and the table came over.  Click the save icon at the top and then "ok" at the bottom - all should be there with the manatee pic.

Looking forward to it - kinda, kinda not.  I was sore for 3 days after just the incline portion.

I got tired of the weather changes, so flipped for a treadmill and got my old cycleops out of storage and set them up in a spare room.  Although not as nice as outside, it does permit riding at 4am and workouts when I have my girls.  I also get a lot of movies from the library to keep me interested.  Also recorded this years ironman - inspiration.

Hoot Hoot - back pat for me.   PR on the spank blasing 10k today - 53'34".  Broke my old 10k record by nearly 2.5 minutes and finished 4th in age group.  Best part - Jan (who last year told me she can't run) took 2nd in her age group on the 5k portion - also set a personal best for herself.

Great weekend so far!!!

Yanti - GET SOME REST!!!  Time to take several weeks off to fully recover.  Wait for at least 1 week after you are feeling 100% before doing anything - then start over from scratch on your training plan.

All - the "nothing new on race day" applies to EVERYTHING YOU DO ON RACE DAY.  No new clothes, no new drinks, no new bike / bike tires / bike tubes, no new food.  If you need new tires on your bike, replace them a few weeks before and get some rides on them before the race to make sure they are installed properly.  NEVER Adjust your bike on race day - saw a cyclist have to withdraw from a race after he could not manage to ride due to a seat issue - he tried to adjust his seat and broke the bolt just prior to the start.  Having it a few mm off would have been better than the 6 inches too low that he then had to deal with.

NICE!  congrats to you both...

I got back in the pool and tried a 3K swim which i finished (only stopping once for less than a minute to fix my goggles).  I wasn't all that tired when i finished...but later i was worked!  It really snuck up on me, i went to watch a movie and fell asleep and didn't get my bike ride in today, i was too tired and my body (especially my arms) just felt tired and sore, but in that really good way.  i sure do like swimming, i just wish i could listen to my iPod while i swam.  Does anyone have any experience with water proof cases for a nano or an iPhone?  Yanti, thanks for pushing me to swim longer and further!  It took me 1 hour 6 min for 3000m.
