Been doing well down here in Texas!  Just ran the Houston marathon and have another one on March 3rd. Then March 5th is the 24-week out date and thus begins IMMT training.

I have a good buddy who is doing IMMT so we will be logging a bunch of miles together. Another group of about 10 from Houston is training for IMMT so will try to hook up with them periodically as well.

Texas is going to have a pretty good number of triathletes up in Quebec but we are usually looking for any excuse to get away from the summer heat & humidity so a Canada trip makes sense!

Jeff

Fred D - 2012-01-18 12:48 PM  I've been BT friends with birkierunner for years but never met.

Fred and I have a pre-race lunch date.

My training has been plagued by battling an upper respiratory thingee for almost 3 months.  Back to running regularly and will get in the saddle and the pool soon.  Here are some pics of M-T during a vacation visit during Thanksgiving week.  I'll also be racing IM M-T 70.3 in June.

Village

Village condo on fire...took out over 12 units I think...many, many, dollars...It was burning while one of the race organizers was giving me a tour of the course (he ran a small cafe we ate in)

Road to Lac Superieur

Road to Lac Superieur...some of these climbs seemed to go forever

Highway 117 near turnaround

Near swim start

Nice pics, thanks!

So, what are the climbs like in terms of how long (timewise - ballpark) they are? I think that will be the biggest challenge for me in training - finding any sustained climbs. Lots of short rollers around here but thats about it.

I sure hope this bike course really is similar to Lake Placid or Wisconsin.  If it's worse, it'll be a killer. :-)

I haven't done Placid so no help there, but I've done IMWI 5 times.  M-T is nothing like WI.  Besides the road conditions that Fred mentioned, WI is one full of rollers and tons of turns.  WI has 3 serious climbs (done 2x due to loop) but they are relatively short in length.  M-T has some very long, extended climbs...some steep sections but not for long.....but not really rolling like WI.  I didn't really do any measurements when I drove the course in Nov...I just wanted the visuals....so can't comment on how long the climbs are.  But I would prepare yourself for some climbs that will take more than a couple minutes.  I've done Canada 2x and there aren't any long climbs like that, but M-T is definitely a tough bike course.  There are some threads over on ST that discuss the course in detail.

Thanks.  Yeah I guess I was just thinking overall elevation with IMWI.  You're right the roads are pretty slow in WI, and the rollers never stop.  So I guess I should be thinking of comparisons to LP where I did better anyway.  That flat stretch after Keene helped a lot in that race, with a nice mental break.  LP's hills were fine on the first loop but got downright awful on the 2nd. ;-)  The downhill at LP heading into Keene wasn't to my liking either, do we have anything like that?  I wasn't able to fully take advantage of it because I'm not willing to go flying over a guardrail like one of our MT mates spoken of in this thread. :-)

It would be nice to get up there for a training weekend but the schedule is already getting packed. :-(

I am really liking the idea of smooth roads!

First post in this group. Just wondering if there are any other Newfoundlanders doing IMMT? Also, anybody ever use any of the training plans from multisports.com? They have a race specific plan for IMMT.Chris

Welcome!  Not NFLD either but PEI.  Did you see the original participant list that was on the IMMT website that included the province/state of everyone?  That would have told you if there were others (no doubt there are) but I think the current list only shows country.

I didn't see that list.

Training has been pretty unstructured so far. Just making sure to swim/bike/run a couple times per week. I plan to start following a plan the first week of March, up until the race. I'll be spending a lot of time indoors on the trainer thanks to our winter weather!

I was just thinking that as well.  I have a few Spring half-irons before IM MT, and it might be time to start contemplating thinking about potentially considering mulling over the possiblility of maybe speculating on the feasibility of taking training a little more seriously.

Or maybe not.

I'm hoping they have some sort of shuttle-bus option if we don't want to actually ride 112 miles.

I"m doing Finks 30 week plan and i'm on week 2 so far.  Sometimes i'm like, "oh man, I only have 28 weeks left of training" and other times i'm like, "wow, I still have 28 weeks left of training".

I now know it's 199 days away but damn i'm excited already!  Question for you ironman veterans, how do you sleep the night before an IM or don't you?

Yeah I'm sort of on the Finks plan too though I haven't really meshed my plan in with it yet.  I like his plans.

I'm not sure I've had that much trouble with sleep before any of my IMs, but the first one would've been the hardest, though I think I got at least 6+ hours in.  But it really is true that it won't affect the race too much as long as you got decent sleep the nights leading into it.

For me, the evening before the race in general is very low key, which I think helps.  By that point, we have put everything into bags, dropped off just about everything, and the rest is all just waiting to be carried.  I tend not to hang at any get-togethers or go to restaurants or places where a high percentage of IMers are going to be there talking about the race.  So it's just a really subdued night before I even get to bed.  The race has enough hype on its own, I don't need to add to it that night.
