How are the "post op knee people" doing?I am one week into my chemo and radiation! 5 more chemos and 27 more zaps....woooohoooooFelt very crappy for 2 days...had a "pity party" and then moved on....I have been walking and I ran!! Yes, I ran! First time running since my surgery almost 9 weeks ago...I ran a grand total of 1.5 miles and I felt awesome....like a little kid!Well I hope everyone is recovering well! Keep your chins up and enjoy the holidays!Alicia You are always an awesome inspiration to me. You're basically getting fried and bleached ... and you still ran today! I managed a 10-minute run-ish sorta-looking thing today. |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I'm a week post op for my surgery. Want to know what they did, I have links to an animated video on the procedures in my blog yesterday. I'm feeling more like me as I'm reducing the pain meds I've been taking. How and why anyone would want to take those drugs for fun is beyond me...they are nasty. I have visiting nurse visit 2-3x a week who checks my INR as I'm on comidun to avoid blood clots and in home PT. I've taken a shower, do short little walks around two rooms on the main floor of the house on my crutches. I'm taking 9 different medications on various frequencies and have med chart to keep track of it all. I think I'm going to rent a wheel chair that lifts one leg for when I leave the house. My leg is in a brace locked in extension almost always with a machine that ices my knee 24/7 other than when up. Plus I use a CPM machine 6-8 hours a day and can bend my knee to 82 degrees today. I'm still staying on main floor of the house and sleeping the couch. I have a cankle now. My needing so much help is getting old for my family and I have 7 more weeks. It is strange when simple things become very complicated like dropping something on the floor or carrying some items. I have found bike jerseys and back pockets are perfect for carrying things around when on crutches. I need to get going on Xmas shopping. Next Thursday I fly to Minnesota for the holidays to visit my extended family and elderly parents. Logistics of flying and living at their home is a bit worrisome but it will work out. I'm doing a lot of Netflix watching. Mentally I'm okay and not missing training to much as basic things are hard enough.

Good to see you checking in, Kathy! Lots of us are following your progress ... and have been even before your surgery. Yeah. It's strange how when you can't do the littlest things, it's a whole different perspective. Many thoughts and prayers for your continued healing and holiday travels. |

Pro ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Jeez 6 weeks after my little toe nail fiasco I feel bad for even posting about it! Sending some positive vibs for you all, hope it helps! My wife was scheduled to run a 13.1 race 2 weeks ago and was 99% sure that her 1st Marathon would be in Feb. A week before the HM she wasn't paying attention going down some stairs at a friends place and roll popped her ankle. She's wearing an ankle brace to get around, doc says it was a grade 3 and will evaluate again in a few weeks. She put in so much hard work this summer and was going to destroy her PR. She's was going to try the elliptical this week but its not ready. She tried Yoga but it was too frustrating, so she's lifting weights on the machines. I dread the "Am I getting fat?", "I'm getting fat aren't I?", because even though she's not and I say "of course not" its "you just saying that" or "you better say that." |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Just catching up... I had my shoulder surgery yesterday...I haven't talked to the surgeon yet, so not exactly sure what got fixed...shoulders are notoriously hard to diagnose, even with contrast MRI, but SOMETHING happened in there! I'll talk to him this morning. TriRun26: I hope the bleaching and frying doesn't get you down too much, you are handing it so beautifullly. I am inspired and reminded to be grateful for my health. Jeez, I hope that all came out right...I am still kinda goofy from all the drugs yesterday. Donto: I think anything that throws our body out of whack is worth complaining about...one little toe can bring a big strong athlete down just as sure as a larger extremity. I am super sensitive about my feet! KathyG: Glad to hear you are feeling less pain! I was grateful for the bike jersey tip...even though I am not on crutches, I need to get up and downstairs holding the railings, so it's hard to carry anything...and the jerseys have full zippers, so...easier to get on my arm that can't move more than 2 inches from my side! Yanti: Flip flop brick, outstanding. And BZ on this topic...you start the best threads! Q |

![]() ![]() | ![]() I found this thread at just the right time. I had shoulder surgery back in September. The DR said I would be back to full training in 4-6 months after surgery. Well, 3 months to the day from surgery I still cannot raise my arm above my shoulder without help. Forget trying to get it into a streamline. Tried swimming and that doesn't work too well. I would do better without the arm. I can ride the trainer and run but cannot sleep, it is getting really frusterating. PT said I am way behind where I should be but can't explain why. ARGH. All the other posts here are great. keep it up. You will eventually get through it. I keep saying that to myself too. eventulaay this too will pass. |

I'm 19 months from my original issue and my second much more involved surgery was to try to prevent knee replacement. No explanation what happened that caused my knee to go from normal cartilage 6/10 to bone on bone in 3 spots 6/11. |

No explanation what happened that caused my knee to go from normal cartilage 6/10 to bone on bone in 3 spots 6/11. I'm having trouble accepting that we (meaning I) all have courses of injury/illness as well as recovery that are INDIVIDUAL. Heck, I can't even accept that my healing time would be the average or normal course. The last time I went to the doc (this is on the heels of having had 11 bouts of major illness or injury over the last 18 months), she said it would be at least a week and possibly two of full bed rest. I heard "three days" and that's about what I did. (I will add, to my great chagrin and setback every time I've tried working out or going out). Three weeks out, I highly doubt I've had one full week of bed rest, never mind two. It wouldn't matter if it were much worse or even much better, I can't (won't) accept my illness or state of recovery exactly as it is on any given day. I'm trying. I truly am. I fail a lot. I hope I haven't totally trashed myself during my failures. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I'm at a point now with my right knee that frustration is starting to overtake my thoughts. I injured it in early November on a run (still not sure how), and have not run or biked in almost 6 weeks. Did the MRI thing 3 weeks ago, and it was diagnosed as tendonitis of the quadracept tendon, and some bursitis on the kneecap. 2 weeks of no exercise/rest/antiinflamatories was prescribed (or a cortisone shot, but best long term per doc is rest). I'm now near 3 weeks post MRI, and still not moving. Its getting better, and I could probably run on it, but the negative Nelly attitude of "what if it gets reinjured or aggrevated" is keeping me from hitting the road. Am I just a whiner for thinking this, and need a dose of HTFU? I'd guess its 90% better than what it was just after injury. I occasionally feel a bit of pain/discomfort which sends my brain into semi-panic mode thinking its never going to heal. This just stinks. I feel like a total slug, being held hostage by a knee. |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I can relate. After busting my femur I had 7 months where I couldn't even fully weight bear on my leg, let alone do rigorous activity on it. I've recovered fairly well thanks to knwoing my body and how hard to push, change prescribed exercises to match my needs, physiotherapist was very happy with me. I was able to do a century mile ride post accident, but the knee started to aggravate me once I combined the hard cycling work with the ladder work i do for a living. It's been a few months since then, and I'm finally just now starting to hit the road again, though I still can't run. I was soo worried about overdoing the knee area ( quads above it, screws from the titanium rod was bothering them ) I hope I can get back to, and surpass my previous abilities! Ironman is still a goal that's waiting to be defeated by myself, don't know how well I'll be able to run on this leg in the future, ( minimum 10 months before I even get cleared to try ) but if it's possible, I'll achieve it. Good luck with your recoveries. |

Pro ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Have not popped in here in a while..... I am now almost 7 weeks into my post op knee surgery recovery. I spent the first 6 weeks strapped into a continuous passive motion machine for 8-11 hours a day. I logged this just for fun. The final tally was just shy of 365 hours of CPM purgatory. Ugh. I am still not weight bearing, or even driving. One more week to go for partial weight bearing and getting back on my Toyota! Yay! I am swimming 5X a week and this has kept me sane. Grateful for my ability to swim, even if it is NOT my fav thing to do. I soooooo look forward to the daily excursion to the pool. Hang in there peeps........ Edited by aquagirl 2011-12-15 10:29 AM |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() How did I miss this thread? I thought I didnt have a place on BT anymore, but here it is! LOL. I'm almost 7 weeks out from arthroscopic surgery on my right knee- same day as Aquagirl I have a 15mm chondral injury (pothole) in the lateral part of my knee. I didn't have Microfracture a I was unsure if it was the best route for me to go, so I had the surgery to remove a loose body (12mm) that came from that "pothole". My recovery has gone well. Been doing PT like a champ, riding a bit and swimming (yuck). Can't complain too much but also can't run. I am getting a series of 3 lubricant injections in my knee starting next Tuesday and I have a follow up with a cartilage repair specialist in January. Going to go over the options of OATS, DeNovo graft etc. There's also the option of leaving it alone. I cannot run with this injury which breaks my heart as I have been a "runner" since age 8. I guess my decision as to whether to have any further surgery will depend on how badly I want to try and run again and if I will do more damage by leaving it alone. My knee is still weak, I have tried "jogging" a few times and there is no pain, just a weird, weak feeling.
Injuries suck but to those facing a fixable "overuse" injury, I would say, be patient and relax in knowing that this will get better. It takes having a major catastrophe, like my knee, to give some perspective. What I wouldn't give for some tendonitis, ITBS or shin splints in exchange for this! Happy holidays! |

So I'm using the time to do what I feel like and stop being hard on myself. I have plenty of training time to come, when its back to 85 degrees and sunny. Sometimes you just have to accept things for what they are. |
