Skipped the long run yesterday, was still feeling the effects of the flu.

Got 17.5 mile run in this morning, but felt a little slow. 20 mile run next week before I start my taper.

Oh my gosh, it's been so crazy for me since Friday. haven't done jack all weekend for training. This weekend was full of husband's predeployment prep, his drill, and a big party for the Air Guard. I ate crappy and drank lots of adult bevvies.

Today is a restart. I will FINALLY attend my first day of "swim team". If my kids cooperate, I'll get run on the treadmill in before the swim.

From my training log:

1st day of "swim team", and boy did I check my dignity at the door. Almost drowned during warm up because I was so focused on not hitting my lane partners (how do 3 people swim in 1 lane without wrecking!?). Also swam like a drunken soldier crashing into the dividers, and I accidentally kicked another swimmer. Oi. Can only get better, right?

I'm back on it, doggonnit.

That's good stuff!  It will get better, I promise.  I am often the slowest person at my masters' swim workout, but i learned all the lingo , the drills and how to circle swim; so at least  i look like i know what i'm doing!

Dog woke me up at 3:40 to go outside this morning. Not enouth time to let him out and go back to bed so went out for an easy 5 miles. Was going to try and get a short bike ride in too but did some stretching instead.

tstruyk - 2011-12-08 4:48 AM For me, this "off season" is more of a "pre season" as I'm coming back to tri's after 20 years away. I'm swimming 3 days a week and running 5-6, the only thing I'm neglecting right now is cycling, but a road bike and a trainer shortly after Christmas will remedy that... Mtb riding is sporadic this time of year with freeze/thaw mucking up the trails. I would think I would keep running in the off season as it seems, for me at least, to take the longest time to build safely. My swim endurance bounces back fast as does cycling... But I suppose if depends on the person.

nothing more fun then riding mtn bikes in gunk and snow~ i have had more fun doing group rides in the snow then any other time~ I highly recommend if you have trails you can access during snow season ~ bundle up and do just as nike says ~ JUST DO IT!

So how much should an off season be an "Off season".  I am struggling a little bit to stay at low level.  I want to do this so that I get a good recovery month in before setting 2012 goals and go all out!  The issue is that as I start to feel 100% I  want to go at 110%.  Is anyone else trying to take it easy, or does it matter?  If I knew I wouldn't burn out by April I would start full TRI training now!!!

I think at a minimum I going to get back to running 6 days a week!

sounds like you like to run!!!  you go!!!

for the off season training is time to reflect on the past and plan for the future ~ my suggestion would be to do a few less runs ~ maybe 4 runs max and make one of those runs each week a longer EASY 2 hour aerobic run ~ work on technique by running drills on other days and if you are a triathlete work on your weakest link of the tri...what is your next planned race?

My next planned race is most likely a HM in April, which is why I tend to be more run focused! As for tri, the closest race I can find is in June (wo traveling) and I am really starting to get an itch! I finished an hour long trainer session last night and with-in an hour I as ready to go do something else! I try to tell my self december should be for relax and recovery, looking forward to January!

since you are running April sounds like you are doing the right thing by working on your running. there are great HM running schedules on this site...if you would like some help finding one let me know....they help you make some good decisions on when and how long to work out and when to taper....I think taking it slow in December would be advantageous to you. Run but make them tempo runs ~ and try to throw in some cross training so you are not burned out with running come tri season....what HM are you doing?

mambos - 2011-12-09 4:45 PM My sore throat from earlier in the week has officially turned into a full blown head cold! Decided to pass on the trainer session today to get some rest! Didn't want to but probably for the best! Hopefully I feel better on Saturday, if I bail out on my running partner again he may not reschedule!!Looks like everyone is doing some good swim work! I can't seem to get the swimming down, not sure why! Try to swim and always feel like a lead block sinking to the bottom!

as nemo would say~ keep swimming ~ keep swimming ~ keep swimming  ~ keep swimming....

but I first suggest getting some help with technique....do you know someone that has been swimming with master class for a long time? or do you have a masters class near you...maybe to talk to the coach and see about planning some 1:1 time. My brother n law is a swim coach and my brother is a swim fanatic and I have gotten much help thru them. Growing up in the pool and being on swim teams I used to think that most of the power was in your kick...WRONG! I was doing everything and i mean EVERYTHING wrong. Once I got down my breathing technique, swim stroke and body position ~ i actually was beginning to like to swim~ still not a lover of the swim portion of triathlons but I find it so much easier after some coaching direction!

tstruyk - 2011-12-10 8:06 AM 6 mile run this morning... Could I actually be "gulp" enjoying running???? For some reason my last mile was my favorite. Good rhythm, good stride, good HR... Again wanted to keep going but I know I'm ready for a break. 20 miles this week!!! Rest day tomorrow from running, it should be cold enough to ride the mtb 10 miles or so. Have a GREAT weekend everyone!

mambos - 2011-12-10 8:33 AM How do you fix a 3 day old head cold? Take a 6 mile run in 20 degree weather and freeze it out! Made it to my schedule run and it has done wonders for how I feel, maybe it was all the rockets I blew out along the trail!

nurse ratchitt says stay home and no running for you mister!!!

Next time when you begin to feel a cold I say hit it hard with ECHINACEA (ginseng root ~ which is an immune booster) I used to work in the schools with lots of sick little kids and every time I would feel a scratchy throat or felt like a flu or cold may be coming on I would take echinacea...I acutally did this on Friday as I was feeling not soo good! I was feeling really crummy on SUnday but the cold is now gone today!!!! some people take it daily ~ but I was told by my doc to only take it when needed and it is beneficial ~ I am a TRUE believer and have not had a bad cold in some 20 years!!!!

Hey training partners, looks like a lot of you guys have been out there hitting it hard this weekend.  I took yesterday complete off to hang with my family and relax.  Then hit it today with a 19 mile run!  It was my longest run ever and it'll be the 2nd longest run of all my training for January's marathon.  I felt great (much better than last week).  I did take a few walking breaks and my pace isn't exactly what I wanted it to be (goal: >10:00 min/mile, acutal: 10:27 min/mile), but I'll take it!

Hope you guys enjoy what's left the weekend.

 wow that incredible ~

bet on race day you reach your time goals~ funny how we seem to run better when we have people all around us and cheering for you along the route! kiu!!!

Great swim this afternoon, always fun coming off a rest day! 200 wu, 3x400 dsds, 5x100 on 1:45 (cutting to 1:40 next time!) Then did some 100 sprints for time, wrapped it up with some SPL work. Off for a 2 mile run with the dogs here in a bit! Warm enough to not freeze/thaw the trails... Brick tomorrow???

Conspiracy to prevent Matt from Training on Monday!!

1. Kids bus was 3 minutes early to the stop, I was 1 minute late.  Crap, missed the bus, now have to drive the kids to school and I am late for work.

2. Monday Morning meeting that normally lasts 1 hour lasts 2 hours, not even sure why, the plant ran well over the weekend.  Now my lunch period is used to prep for the afternoon meeting!

3. Made it to the 1st meeting of the afternoon, a little slow, over ran by 10 minutes.

4. Next meeting went well past the 30 minutes that was scheduled and now I am completely behind.  I was supposed to have time in the afternoon to prepare for the monthly meeting on Tuesday Morning.

5. To try and gain some time after work for a workout I get a replacement for the APA pool league and free up some time.  (all done while sitting in my 3rd meeting of the afternoon)

6. Just when everything was starting to calm down, wife calls and says the transmission on her car went out and she is sitting at the maint. shop.  Now I have to stop working on my reports and go pick her up.

Summary:  No training today, didn't finish reports until 9:30pm and now on Tuesday I get to hear how I didn't get everything completed on time all while worring about how much a new transmission costs on an SUV.

I LOVE MONDAY, hopefully Tuesday is just as challenging!!

took the day off ~ from work and training ~ was not feeling well on Sunday and wanted to make sure to not overdo it. Went to wrap gifts for 500 needy families. We were finished and cleaned the hall up in less the three hours. We have an amazing skeleton crew...and the police and firefighters have a huge group of volunteers on hand.

keep up the great work guys!

Slept in this am, so i had to run after work; which i hate.  I did, however, get 30 minutes of my new p90x2 workout in before heading to work.  I really felt that workout during the run; which is why i ended up only running 3.5 v. the 5 i had planned.  After the run, i finished the p90x2 workout.  I think I feel it tomorrow!

lol, it does get better!  keep working on your stroke.  It will start to click one day and you'll see BUG improvements!  IMO what you are going into is the most fun part of swimming!  You'll look back at how hard these first few weeks were and laugh.

there is a saying in motorcycle racing, that for sure holds true in swimming as well.  Dropping seconds is easy, its the tenths that are hard!  Your learning curve is going to be super steep your first few months and you'll be excited to see how much further and faster you can go!

I got out and ran in the rain today   3.33 miles and kept the splits under 9 mins.  s'posed to go 4 but got a late start and needed to get to work.  I'll make it up tomorrow after my swim.  I'm really missing the bike at this point... need a roady and/or a trainer.  with the warmer temps and all the rain trails will be out of commission til the weekend.
