Extreme Veteran 610 San Francisco CA | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 Mentor Group 2012 - CLOSED ReginaPhalange72 - 2011-12-21 10:38 AM My question for everyone right now is what do you wish you knew going into your first IM? What do you NEED to do in training, and what is helpful but not really necessary? (My goal is just to finish respectably and have fun for my first one.) From everything I've seen/read/heard it seems like it would be really easy to get hung up on specific training methods, testing, and equipment, but lots of them also seem like just extras that help you get better once you've already got the basic ability to actually DO an IM. I'd say the biggest thing for me looking back was consistency. Have a plan for what you need to get done each day, and at the start of Ironman training try to get into a groove with just getting out there and getting as many of your sessions done as possible. Once you're able to figure out what works for you from a scheduling perspective it gets a lot easier to go into "auto pilot" and stay consistent with your workouts. One key session isn't going to make or break your race, it's just doing the work week after week. I also found it helpful to have my coach schedule the same types of workouts on the same day of the week which made it easier to plan. I knew I'd always swim on Tues, go to track on Weds, etc. and it helped my husband plan as well. I was worried about making the bike cutoff so I focused a lot on biking and running and put less of an emphasis on swimming because I'm an ok swimmer and could finish in a time I was comfortable with without putting a lot of time in the pool. My goal was to simply finish the race, and I knew I had the most time to gain on the bike. Now that my biking is in much better shape (I made the cutoff with over an hour and a half to spare) if I were to do a second one I think I'd focus more on swimming than I did for my first. |

I'm feeling like I'm on information overload right now! I don't have too many specific questions right now since I'm just marathon training at the moment, which I've done many times before. But as things get closer, I'm sure there will be a lot. My question for everyone right now is what do you wish you knew going into your first IM? Don't eat the pizza at the finish line!! Your mind will tell you to eat it you will want it but believe me two hurling epiodes, 3 hours in the med tent, and 3 IVs later its not worth it. Your stomach will not be able to handle that type of food so quickly!! |

Also, that sounds miserable! |

Expert 1121 | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 Mentor Group 2012 - CLOSED So got 40 minutes in of strength training at the gym. Just got back to office. at least twice a week, when I leave the gym, the guy at the fronst desk is always eating some sort of take out (never good stuff). Today, was this enormous pile of Chicken Wings. I can't lie, I was jealous!! But seriously, at least hide that from the people visiting your place of business, looking to get healthy!! Quite comical! |

They have "Pizza Mondays" at the Planet Fitness by my house. Makes me laugh and cry at the same time. A gym that markets themselves as different because it's not a meathead atmosphere giving pizza to the kind of clientele they attract. Seems a bit counter productive. |

Stop get off and go in the woods or rest area. In a race if you must urinate on yourself and bike you do not stop soaking your socks and shoes when you do, it goes down your legs make sure no one is behind you obviously. i don't wear socks, so the only thing that would get wet would be my shoes. use your water bottle to rinse off when you finish. Keep in mind that urine, especially in us athlete types is typically very sterile since we consume a lot of fluid/water, your pee is actually pretty clean. I always wash my bike after a long race, it gets gu's. fluids, road grime and all kinds of crap on it. I clean and tune prior and after a race. #2, i have an iron gut, it locks down under stress so i do not usually have to go #2. You obviously should not poop your self, some people are not so lucky, they have to hit the rest facilities in a race, or as a bear would do. I usually have tissues with me when i train, there is always that first time. Only you know your body, and even sometimes it'll throw you a curve.

Member 43 | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 Mentor Group 2012 - CLOSED Just caught up on all the posts! I'm not very good at checking everything very often but i plan to try to get to it sooner more often. Kelly-sorry to hear about your ankle! I wish you a very speedy recovery. I know how you feel with the injuries..i have very weak bones and have had 7 stress fractures (all in my tibias) and just had to run my first marathon after not running for a whole 5 weeks before! Somehow managed to still go 3:28 and under my 3:30 goal, but i know how frustrating it is when all you want to do is train! Sounds like everyone has great goals. As for mine, I would like to finish the ironman with a respectable time. I don't want to have a goal time, other than finishing for my first one i guess, but i have no idea even what time to gauge where i'll finish. I've done a HIM at 5:04 and the 3:28 mary..what should i shoot for? For those that have done the full ironman..i agree with sarah's question of..what do you wish you had known? Any suggestions for transitioning from doing a half to a full? Kelly..if you still have that plan would you be able to send it to me? I can PM you my email. Hope everyone is enjoying the holiday season! Meghan Oh and PS...doing an ironman on a road bike ok? I don't have a tri bike and i'm still in the need of getting aerobats too. I'll get a picture up soon. |
