A few keys on weight loss.

1. Drink a gallon of water per day - Doing so burns an extra 100-150 calories per day and will fill you up so you don't eat more. This may seem daunting at first. Build up to it. I carry a 24 oz water bottle and drink 5 of them during the day. Just keep sipping it.

2. Eat every hour - This may sound counter intuitive but by doing so you are speeding up your metabolism. The thing is to eat right. I got up and had a banana at 4:50. At 6:30 after masters (shellback was AWOL ) swim I had a second banana. 7AM I had an almond and apricot kind bar. 8AM apple. 9AM I'll have some carrots and hummus. You can eat as little as 5 baby carrots but eat something.

3. Stop eating 3 hours before bed - It's dead calories.

4. Do weight training to build muscle mass - Every pound of muscle burns and extra 50-100 calories per day. By having a good amount of muscle mass it gets easier to keep the weight off.

5. Get a heart rate monitor and train in zones 1 and 2 - These are the fat burning zones. By staying in them you'll lose more weight faster and you won't suffer burnout by training harder than your fitness level.

6. Kill the saturated fats and fried foods - Staple of every diet. Kill soda as well.

7. Whole grains - Switching from white to whole grains  will help because they are higher in fiber and more nutritious. I love the Arnold Oat Nut bread and find it way more tasty than white anyway.

8- More fiber - Foods that are high in fiber take more energy to digest and thus there are less net carbs.

9- Fish - Especially the Omega 3 fish salmon, tuna and swordfish.

10- Fruits and vegtables - Especially ones rich in antioxidants such as blueberries and beans. Bean really are good for your heart.

I posted this earlier in the thread and am bumping it since there are more people interested in weight loss. From back in my days of lifting more than cardio I've dropped 20 pounds in a month almost purely off of diet without starving myself.

I had a great intervals workout on the trainer this morning. 1:45 at 248 average watts, 503 max watts, 137 average heart rate and 157 max heart rate. Some of the one minute intervals I was pushing over 400 watts for half of the time. I finished with a 17 minute interval where I pushed 270+ watts for the entire interval. Both are nice improvements and done without the heart rate going over the top.

Thanks for the comment on the HRM, Peregrinesgirl. After reading that article I am going to look into them and see about maybe making that my Valentine's Day gift to myself I thought that was delightfully appropriate.

Wow. Thanks, GiGi. I am finding that I am not alone in that experience. Comforting yet sad that it seems to be a lot more common than one would think. Nice to meet someone else who understands/shares my stuggle!

KC, I always hated running.  The heart rate monitor is what convinced me it wasn't torture.  I'm sure your trainer is doing this for you too, but the HRM kept me going slow long enough to start to enjoy running.  It's also a serious feeling of accomplishment to start being able to up your heart rate for a certain amount of time.  They're not that pricey either, really.  And I'm doing this as cheaply as I can!

So, a setback today.  I haven't run for about a week and a half because my knee started being grumpy and I was waiting to get in with a physical therapist.  I figured I was running wrong somehow because my left ankle was run over about 12 years ago.  PT tested me and discovered that my left side is a little weaker in general, but specifically and most pathetically, hip stability and glute.  So.  Now I have a list of exercises and an order not to run until I even out a little more.  This bugs me.  I was really hoping to get some speedwork in this winter because I'm a turtle.

In the meantime, anything other than the Tabata intervals to get faster on the bike?

Also, my goal for the winter is to get faster at everything.  Is there an ideal volume for the week right now?  I'm thinking around 8 hours.  Is that reasonable, burnout level, or slacker?  I look forward to working out; I like it; it makes me happy; makes me feel productive.

Oh yes, and I'm in New Hampshire--can't remember who was asking about where everyone was, but that's where I am.

Well you'll get faster just being in the saddle making time to bike is probably one of the biggest factors in getting faster. There are plenty of things to do to help improve. Are you doing any weights? e.g. lunges, squats, hamstring curls, leg extensions,  Do hill intervals... Look into the spinervals dvd collection as well.

8 Hours sounds fine, but training should increase each 4 week period then lower on the 4th week, and then build up again...

Today's Stupid Questions:

1. I see people mentioning a/an "oly"... ? I assume it refers to "olympic" something but it looks like a type of set or session of swim training? Can someone clue me in on this?

2. How in the world do you "dive" into the pool WITH your goggles on and not have them flip up or tear off your face? Never have figured that out. I see people do it all the time but no clue how? If I make them too tight I get a terrible headache. Is there a trick? An angle to hit the water? A way to hold your head? Am I missing something?

Well, Oly does mean Olympic, not really sure what you want answered on question 1 though..

Question 2, you don't have to dive use a ladder or just jump in feet first.

I recently bought The Essential Triathlon Swimming DVD by Kevin Koskella. Has anyone else seen this DVD? Last night was the first time in the pool since viewing it. All went well, did nothing but drills. Vertical leg kicking for 10 minutes and 800m of side swimming. I'm going to try and follow the DVD and the triswimcoach web site and just build each week to improve my stroke.

Swimming drills are essential and will make you better. I hate vertical kicking drills especially the day after a heavy interval workout.

Just pushed my limits by determining my LT Threshold on a run so that I can set my heart rate zones.  That hurt.

I warmed up for 10 minutes and then did an all out 30 minute run - 10 minutes into the all out run I hit the lap button on my HR monitor to recrod my avg HR for the last 20 minutes.  I then cooled down for 10 minutes.

Story:  Born and grew up in London England. Always overweight but always liked the idea of mountain biking and running. Moved to the USA at 22 and got seriously overweight. In 2007 i was 450LBS +!! 5ft 11. I decided enough was enough and got myself down to 220lbs through running, biking and swimming. Really wanted to hit the 200 mark but never quite made it. Last year got a nasty injury in a mountain bike race at the end of the season and now im up to 245 and working at getting down to 200 for July of this year. I have finished a Half IM but i had alot of back problems because of the weight. Last year i finished my first Marathon in 4 hours 40mins.My injury is much better now and ramping up the training

Family Status Married with 4 daughters! Two are grown up the other 2 are 11 and 10.

Current Training: Trying to figure out what i want to do in 2012. Not going to even try an Ironman until im under 200lbs as i know my back wont take it. Of course im swimming biking and running but also do boot camps and body sculpt class. I like to have fun though so i rollerskate with my girls, go mountain biking and and like to do other fun things that alll the hardcore training lets me do. Hoping to get a new Xbox Kinnect to do some workouts on during the cold season to. I have a riding group i can ride with here in the summer.

2011 Races: GreenBay Cellcom Marathon, 4 Sprint Triathlons, 2 Olympic and various runs.

Planned 2012 Races:  Last year i did a Marathon on May in Green Bay WI and it was cold and windy! This year im thinking about training for a september Marathon. I would really like to try REV3 Wisconsin but i can not spend much money on races this year. I do work for a local Triathlon company so i can get free races so ill be doing some Triathlons, Duathlons and Half Marathons. The Bellin 10k in Green Bay again. At least 2 or 3 100mile bike races.

Weightloss: Need to get to my goal of 200 for this year!!! 245 right now. Ive been with Weight Watchers but to save money im using LoseIt.com

Hi,

I'm hoping your group is still open. My name is Keiren. I just turned 51 last week. In 2010 I completed my first sprint triathlon. Then I did 3 more that year. Having crossed that off my "list", I got lazy in 2011 and didn't sign up for any triathlons but did some 5Ks etc. Although I go to the gym and work out, I need to have a goal! Weight loss is another one of my goals. I've lost 35 lbs on WW years ago. In addition to competing in some triathlons this year, I would like to get back to my goal weight (about 10lbs). I could use some guidance and encouragement as I jump back in!

Lunges and squats, yes, weight machines not so much.  I've been careless with weights before and ended up sore for a week when I do.   Hill intervals for tomorrow morning then...  My littlest sister got me a trainer for Christmas and I'm anxiously waiting for it to get here--I HATE the stationary bikes at the gym.

Something else that I forgot to mention. Try a rowing machine at the gym as well That also builds up leg strength. Well, if you were sore for a week, I'm guessing you over did it a tad... You know recovery day does not mean rest day right? As long as we cover that. When I am full throttle training, I think I get one day off per month... The recovery day's can be an easy swim, easy bike keeping the heart rate low. Just to get the blood moving. Help facilitate the repair of your muscles. Anyway what kind of trainer did your littlest sister get you?

Hey Everyone... as it seems to be the quasi-standard format, here I go....  Excited to be part of the group!

Name: BigBeltz (Chris)

Story:  I’m 31 and currently finishing my master’s thesis.  I have always been a very active and outdoorsy person, however the past two years of graduate school have taken their toll – I may be as out of shape as I have ever been.  I am not a big runner, but I’ve done two marathons in the past, a bunch of halfs, and a handful of shorter races.   Given the choice I would spend my time mountain biking, surfing, or backcountry skiing in the winter.  Now that I am in Boston, most of those activities are difficult to do on spur of the moment... and a group of active friends interested is also lacking.

I began training for my first triathlon in 2004, but a month before the race my nice road bike got stolen out of my car and I haven’t ridden a road bike much since.  When I moved back to the Boston area after living in Jackson Hole, Wyoming for 6 years I knew I would need to find some adventure in my life to keep me going.  It’s taken me a year or so to realize I needed something more active and intense... so here I am.

Family Status: Engaged, no kids.  Fiancee is super supportive.

Current Training: I am currently trying to put in 30-60 minutes a day, with the preference for doing two 30 minute sessions of different types.  These may be back to back or morning/evening.  I have been mostly swimming and running, but have logged 15 miles on a converted crappy mountain bike in the past 2 weeks or so.  I have been doing this for the past month or so. Yesterday, I finally had my first great swim – I really slowed down my stroke rate and it allowed me to breath much better.  Today, I swam my first 1000m piece.  I was dreading the swimming, but I am finding that it may be my favorite type of training (at least at 15 degrees).

Planned 2012 Races:  Wildman Sprint Triathlon (Orlando, FL); New England Season Opener Sprint Triathlon (Hopkinton, MA);  and hopefully, Vikingman Triathlon Half-IM (Heyburn, ID)

Weightloss: Currently 225 (or was about a month ago).  Ultimate goal is about 175lbs, though I was down to 162 when I rowed lightweight in college.  Ideally, I’d like to hit 200 or break into the 190s by June.
