GoFaster - 2011-03-31 2:32 PM A non-purchasing question - well, actually I guess it is.  When/who should be buying/riding the 90 on the front vs the 60, if you're running a disc or disc cover on the back?

i don't think you are going to find a specific answer, because it depends on a few factors.  are you comfortable riding 90 mm vs 60mm, difference can be noticable on a windy day.

general guidline is deeper wheels tend to be faster at lower yaw angles.  as you increase speed generally you fight lower wind yaw angle.

I just saw that you basically said what I said in fewer words.  Haha.  Thank for helping out!

All the best,

ajusf16 - 2011-03-31 3:12 PM So as a larger person I need to make sure the wheels are only designed for clydes? Would a regular wheel just collapse?

We will be offering a clydesdale option for our wheels.  Rear wheels will come standard with 24 spokes and have a recommended upper weight limit of 190lbs.  Our clydesdale rear wheels will come with 28 spokes and have a recommended upper weight limit of 230lbs.  Our front wheels will come standard and in a clydesdale version with 20 spokes.

A rear wheel would more than likely not collapse (not to say it's impossible).  The problem would probably be seen in your spoke fatigue life.  Let's say a lighter weight athlete gets 3.5 million wheel revolutions before a spoke fatigues and breaks... a heavier athlete may break a spoke at 2.5 million revolutions.

The numbers above are just random numbers and have no meaning.  I just wanted to give you and example.  My best advice is to stick to our recommendations for optimal performance.

I hope that helps,

You and Trix both answered with what I expected, but figured I'd post the question.  This MOP biker will be looking at the 60's.

Think of it as cyclical loading. If you hang a heavy weight from a rubber band, you will get fewer bounces and more displacement. Add another rubber band to support the same weight and the system becomes stronger.

If you read the read of the thread Chris says when they'll be available for pre-order. I'm assuming that they'll be available direct from the website.

no necessarily but that frankly this is why i had a 60 mm front when i started, now ride a hed H3 rather then the hed H3d...not because i can't handle it...i just am not sure i am at sufficient speed in a race that it would require a 90mm upfront.

however with the pricing on these wheels i will be buying a 90 + disc for racing.

We will be selling these wheels direct from our website.  We hope to offer a pre-order sometime in May.  Customers who pre-order will be guaranteed a wheel set in our first factory order.  We are estimating that wheels will ship 60-90 days after the pre-order is placed.  The website is currently a 1 page website.  When the pre-order is available our full website will go live.

Thanks for your interest,

How many pre-orders will you take?  I have been looking and looking and was thinking about SRAM S80s  but these look just as good and much more affordable.  Do you have mailing list for when you start taking orders?

Chris - you were originally quoting $249 for front wheels, but on Slowtwitch you're now quoting $349.  Can you explain the discrepancy.

Thanks

From 1/10/11 in this BT thread~
1.  Our price point is still $249-$299 for front wheels, $349-$399 for rear wheels and $500-$600 for a disc wheel.

From ST today~
Right now our estimated prices are $350 for front wheels and $399 for rear wheels. Our Disc wheels are currently estimated at $499.

Seems like they've gone over by $50 on the front, high end for the rear, and low end for the disc.  As far as meeting price estimates when developing new products (before the first rim was even molded), seems like par for the course to me...maybe even better than par.

Here is a bit of history with our pricing. When we started this whole venture 18 months ago we asked ourselves if we could put race wheels on the market for $249 (front) and $299 (rear). Our original plans were to use plastic fairings, cheap spokes, cheap hubs and cheap rims. We found out that was possible and then the engineers in us kicked in.

We asked ourselves... "who the heck would want to ride a plastic wheel with cheap components?" The answer was nobody. Long story short we have done every thing in our power to design a high quality wheel at a great price. Have our prices gone up $75-$125 per wheel since the inception of this idea? Yes. However, here is the list of improvements we've added...

Plastic Fairings --> Changed to Carbon Fiber Fairings
"Any old Aero Shape" --> Changed to a leading edge aerodynamic shape that has been designed using CFD and will be testing in the wind tunnel.
Cheap rims --> Now Custom built Aluminum Rim designed to match our custom designed "wide" fairings
Cheap Hubs --> Changed to High Quality Aluminum hubs with a ceramic upgrade option
Cheap Round Spokes --> Changed to Industry Leading Sapim CX-Ray Aero Spokes.

We think those are pretty good reasons to increase the price by $75-$125. Additionally, exchange rates have changed effecting us by 15% over the last 18 months and increased our material pricing.

Hopefully that helps.

All the best,

Front wheels, 60mm and 90mm will be the same price.  Rear wheels, 60mm and 90mm will be the same price.  Discs will be their own price.  We will also be offering a wide profile training wheel that will be priced cheaper (front and rear) than our 60mm and 90mm wheels.  You'll still get the same ride quality and component quality of our race wheels with out the carbon fiber fairings.

Hope that helps,

Any chance you can build a PowerTap into the wheels (60/90 or disk)?  Seems like a 60/90 rear with a PT would make an awesome way to train/race with power.

Out of the gate no. It is a consideration for the future. The powertap hubs have a different hub flange diameter than our standard hubs and will force us to create a new hole pattern in our fairings. After we get our initial products designed and in production we will consider that option. As a start up company is is too expensive to create a whole new set of fairings at this point.

I hope you understand,

trust me dude, if they can do a disc w / pt i am there.  in fact i am buying the disc eventhough i ride same way as you pt+cover.  but for shorter races i pretty much understand effort at this point...

Hey guys.  I know you've been pushing for the black braking surface.  Very cool, IMO.  What exactly is this surface?  Paint/epoxy?  Have you evaluated braking in wet conditions with this surface?  I'd assume it would be similar to a carbon clincher....slightly less friction than an aluminum rim.  Any thoughts?
