Veteran 104 Downers Grove | Subject: RE: Scott F's group - FULL! What up group? Well I finally finished the Race Report so feel free to look at it if you have the time. It was an awesome experience, and once I conquer my fear of OWS I should definately drop more time. Thanks for ya'lls motivation and such. I can't wait for everyone to do their first DU or Tri!! I think Scott mentioned it to me to just enjoy it and have a good time for the first one, and honestly I made sure I did. It was a great experience and I'm stoked for the next one in a little over a month. Giddy UP! Matt, Mauricio, I hope the knee issues heal up quickly and you guys are back on full training mode soon! Keep us posted on what the Doc's say if you see them. Ok I'm slammed at work but had to post this. I hope everyone's doing well and I'll be online again tomorrow. Later! |

Veteran 100 Davis, California | Subject: RE: Scott F's group - FULL! matt3liv - 2007-06-05 10:32 AMThe strengthening you describe is the second part of my own prescription to recovery and a cure. I need to get some leg strengthening underway. I have done zero weight training since I started training for tris. I figured I'd just work on cardio fitness and base building, then worry about strengthening in the offseason. I guess that plan isn't going to work so well. I haven't been to see a sports doc yet, but I started checking them out locally. My athletic club is affiliated with the local hospital. They have a PT clinic with a bunch of orthos and sports injury doc right in the same building. I'll make an appointment in the next couple of days if this doesn't improve a lot in the short term. Thanks for the input. It really helps to validate what I was thinking. Matt - just to clarify - when I said leg extension, I actually meant without weights. You can obviously do them with weights, but I just do high reps, no weights, or with ankle weights, since I don't have time to go to the gym to do them, and I don't think weight training in general is a good expenditure of time during the "on season" for training (it's fine for the off season, but when you're pressed for training time, SBR offers more ROI). Anyway, I just do the leg extensions (30 degrees of motion, from slightly bent to straight) while at my desk or on a chair at home...

Thanks for the clarification. I did a little research yesterday on rehab exercises. This morning I took the pooch for her normal 15 minute walk. This was effectively a short warm up. When I got home, I went down to the basement and did the extensions with what I call rehab weight, just 15 pounds. I did sets with each leg individually, then together. I could feel it working the sore area by the third set on my right leg. Then I did a few other leg exercises. Hamstrings, calves, then some stretching, and a very short core-type workout. It felt pretty good. Thanks again for the info. |

Master 2356 Fenton, MI | Subject: RE: Scott F's group - FULL! Morning all. MY KNEE IS IMPROVING!!! Sorry, just had to get that off my chest. Aaron, did you end up racing in a drifit shirt? I have some tight poly shirts. One in particular is sleeveless and I'm thinking about wearing that under my wetsuit and skipping the tshirt at transition. How did that work out for you? Scott, what are tri tops made of? just straight polyester? Do they have pockets? Most that I've seen have zippers. For such a short race, I'm guessing that I'll be fine with the shirt I'm planning to use. This thread has been a little slow lately. Lets pick up the chatter. There are a lot of racers this weekend. |

Veteran 104 Downers Grove | Subject: RE: Scott F's group - FULL! Matt, I purchased a DeSoto Tri Top, which was just like a DriFit sleeveless shirt. Pretty tight, but it fit well under the wetsuit and was great on the ride and run. It had a pocket on each side of the shirt. I bought some DeSoto Tri Shorts (5" inseam) low waist. Man it was like I was out there in underwear... something I have to get used to! But if you can fit it under your wetsuit and forgo putting it on at Transition I would recommend it. Saw a couple of guys with problems putting theirs on b/c of being wet and rolled upin the back... not fun. How's everybody feeling about their race coming up? Stoked? Yeahhhh buddy. |

Master 2356 Fenton, MI | Subject: RE: Scott F's group - FULL! Thanks for the info Aaron. Getting comfortable with the shorts in public is ... unique. I got used to wearing jammers in the pool. That made the switch to trishorts pretty easy. The tri shirts are just plain polyester though, right? |

I am really trying to keep myself calm. I did have one question. It is supposed to be about 53 degrees at the beginning of the race. Am I going to be cold? I had planned to wear some tri shorts and a tank - tri top under my wetsuit so that I didn't have to put anything else on in T1. I know that I will be pumped but is that cold to be wet and riding? |

I am counting on my competitor's Instincts to kick in and do fairly well. My stretch goal is 1:30 for this race and I think I need a good swimmig in order to be close to my goal. I am racing as a clysdale so we will see how it goes.... I received my Tri top on Monday and I knew they are supposed to be skin thight but it was extremely thight and it did not feel good so I need to return it. I will be swimming without a wet suit and running/biking with a regular cycling jersey. I hope that putting the jersey on after the swim won't be so bad. A little Nervous, anxious, exited? Absolutely!! Mauricio |

But, if I threw on a jacket, I'd probably be cooking for the second half of the bike. I'm lots of help, aren't I? |

I've read about the PB toast thing here at BT. I am a fan of PB toast, but I prefer it more like a sandwich, with a sliced banana inside. I eat oatmeal for breakfast every morning though. I'll probably just stick to my normal foods. Cup of tea, oatmeal, water. |

I am going to try not to change my morning diet for the race, oatmeal with raisins and roasted almonds (no sugar added). I am going to try to eat no later than 5:45 am, my race starts at 8. I think you will be fine with the temperatures. Good luck !!! |

Veteran 100 Davis, California | Subject: RE: Scott F's group - FULL! Sorry all - busy week at work... You all will rock your races this weekend! Can't wait to hear about them. Remember, you've done all you can to prepare, now take it easy and execute what you've been working on. Race day nutrition: for a sprint, not much of an issue. Grab a gel at the beginning of the race, or one the bike, maybe some calories in your drink mix. For Oly, hopefully you've worked on it a bit during training - maybe a gel or two on the bike, drink mix, another gel on the run. Clif Bloks rock!! Tri tops: yeah, they're often tight. Sizing is WEIRD for tri/cycling clothing. Better to try things on, or expect at least a decent chance that you'll need to return something. Tri tops should be snug, but not super tight - tighter than a bike jersey (so you can swim in it w/o a wetsuit if you want) but not restricting your breathing! Pockets are optional - if they're there, the should be snug and streamlined so they don't fill up with water if you swim sans wetsuit. |

I will be hot by the time I run. What do you guys plan to do for food on race day - before the race. Laurie Personally, I usually err on the side of being too cold rather than too hot, mostly because I hate to stop and put on clothes when I'm wet... if anything, it's my feet and hands that get cold, so putting on a jacket wouldn't help much anyway. But by all means if you think you'll be cold enough to suffer, throw something on, lots of people do, but usually when it's not expected to warm up much. If it is, you'll probably be overheating before long. Pre-race food - stick to your usual breakfast, don't change your routine too much. I usually have a bagel and cream cheese, which goes down easy and provides some carbs and some fat for longer term energy... Good luck! |

Folsom, CA (Sacramento Area) | Subject: RE: Scott F's group - FULL! As far as I know, the number is printed on your body for the swim, needs to be in your bike foir the bike leg and in the front of your body for the run. When I got my race package this afternoon, I got two number tags, one for my bike (a litlle smaller than the other) that I can either zip tie to the frame or tape it to the frame so it is visible. The other number tag I got is for the run and it can either be safety pinned to the front of your shirt/top or if you have a "race belt" you can clip it to it. I have read that the belts are easier to use so I bought one this afternoon for 8 dollars. Good luck Laurie Edited by MrSolis 2007-06-08 5:05 PM |

By the time I was done, the temp was up to 56. I was soaked for the ride, and just wearing trishorts and a sleeveless shirt. I was fine, temp wise. Actually, I was shocked to see the temp was only 56 when we were done. GL to all! |

Veteran 283 Ontario | Subject: RE: Scott F's group - FULL! Hey everybody. Sorry for being missing this past while. I had moved at the end of last month and I still do not have Internet access so I have not been able to log on here. I also didn't write down my training so I am not even going to guess at my last week of training.
I had my first triathlon today! I will update a full race log on it but heres the short version
I showed up nice and early to register and setup. I was setting up my transition around 830am, with a race start of 10:05. As I am setting up a realize I didn't have my helmet. crap.... I couldn't make it back to town and back so I called my mom to grab my helmet and get it to me. I am standing by the road waiting for her in my wetsuit. My heart was beating a million miles an hour, as it is 9:30 and she is still not here. 9:45 comes and they ask people to clear out of transition, and I am contemplating doing the swim and hoping my helmet appears. 9:50 comes and she arrives (thank god). So I go line up in the water, making useless chit-chat while we wait. I am first wave of course. We start off and I get to the first buoy, and I am running out of breath and gulping so much lake water I have to do the backstroke about 50% of the way. For some reason this made me very dizzy on my back from the waves I had to take my goggles off. I get to shore and stumble to my bike. I grab a towel and put it on my face, and fall down on the grass. I was so dizzy and full of lake water, I bent over and threw up my breakfast. *note to self, bring 2 towels next time. Get on the bike, went well and made up a lot of time I think. Came back for the run and just couldn't do it. I had done so many 4k runs before, but I just couldn't move my legs. Luckily an angel in the form of Helen from this site caught up beside me in the last 1mile and pushed me to the end. Final time was 1hr 35mins for a 500m/18k/4k sprint. I was happy to finish and crawled home and sat in the new hot tub for about 2 hours.
So there you have it. Probably the most painful, challenging experience of my life. Can't wait to do it again. |

I did my first 5k race this morning. My goal was to be under 30 minutes but I managed to knock almost 3 full minutes off my best time and finished in 26:45! I did not place in the top 3 of my age group (45-49) (it's the toughest group of course) but I did really well over all so I was very happy. I will post the details once the results are posted. I have to tell you that I kept thinking about you guys the whole time I was running and how I was going to have to tell you my time and it really made me run faster. You guys rock! |

Member 66 Parker | Subject: RE: Scott F's group - FULL! Whoo Hoo - Is right! Way to go Robb Whoo Hoo - Barb Tri #1 is done for me - Yeah!!!! I was a wreak the night before but suprisingly I had a good night sleep once I got to bed. I left the house around 5:00 and got there at 5:30. I got checked in and set up. I did a light jog and went and checked out the swim course. It was really cold. I was in the second wave of swimers. They started the slowest swimers first. I put down a really slow time so by the time I got out I was feeling really good about the race. I past so many people. (Not that that is important - but it sure makes you feel good) My transition 1 went fine I felt plenty warm. I definately need to work on my bike speed - everyone that I passed in the swim passed me on the bike and then some. The compeditive person in me really didn't like that at all. Especially when I could read the age of the people blowing by me on their calf. Some hotshot decided to pass in between me and another biker on the turn around loop and came so close to me that we brushed forearms. Finished the bike slow but in one piece. Transition 2 was really short My legs weren't that bad except that I had to run down hill first thing over some really uneven grass. I just took the run slow and steady - I ran the whole thing and felt that I gave it all I could. Over all first experiance was awsome!! I can't wait until the next one. I have the distance down now it is time for some speed. Scott - now I'm going to need to borrow some of your biking knowledge. I need to get faster on that bike. Thanks everyone for all the support.
