mndiver - 2008-01-05 2:46 PM You went to Grand Cayman?  Are you a diver?  I am so jealous, I love diving the north side of Grand Cayman.
Sadly no. I went down there not knowing how amazing it was and then when I wanted to it was too late to get certified. I did get to go snorkeling though, which was also incredible. It was a nice family vacation. I hope to go back someday and scuba dive my lungs out. I was wondering what you guys think of this training plan for my sprint triathlon in May. http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/cms/article-detail.asp?articleid=... I'm going to be incorporating a lot more running into it because I have a half-marathon coming up in April also. The plan I intend on using for that is this Hal Higdon one. http://www.halhigdon.com/halfmarathon/inter.htmI've gotten as far as week 6 in that one until a foot injury knocked me out of training for 2 weeks. That's how I learned the importance of a good running shoe.

I think if you bump up the long run mileage on the weekend (gradually) and maybe splash in one more run either as a light brick or after your stand alone swim day, you will be able to get sufficient work in for a half mary.  Remember that you are also working your aerobic system on the bike so that will help things progress as well for the run.

That sounds good. Is it worth it on this site to upgrade to silver or gold membership? If I do will all of the ads go away? Also can you guys see my training log? I think I've made it public but I'm not sure. Also is there a way to subscribe to this thread so it's easier to find?

As far as finding the tread, if you look at the bottom of the page when you are reading the tread, there is a little box that says something like "Action" and there is a link you can click that says "Toggle e-mail notification".   If you click on that, it gives you the option of receiving emails when a particular thread is updated.  That's what I did for this one.

I present to the group a second lesson in patience (the first being the silence the first few days).  The theory:  a triathlete entering his/her third season who has put in over 2000 run and 5700 bike miles that takes some time off after the season can just get up off his azz and increase to early summer volumes and intensitys, true or false?

Answer:  False (at least for our theoretical example).  Upon kicking off training in general or starting a new season, gradual increases in distance and/or intervals should be used vs upping mix in both.  Why?  Cuz theoretical PITA knee injuries stink.  Even folks with bases need to rebuild after decreased minutes and be patient.

jszat - 2008-01-11 10:50 AM So whats on tap for the weekend?

Hmmm...45 min run tomorrow, 1 hr bike Sunday.

Life wise, attempt to wade through papers that I just keep shoving into drawers (out of sight, out of mind) and grocery shopping.  Nothing too exciting...

This base building may not be pretty but it sure is needed.  Looks like about an hour ride and a 7 mile or so run on tap.  Might just get them all done on Saturday.  Feeling like if I double up I can take a rest day on Sunday.

im resting today (a lot of skiing has worn me out, plus a 6 mile run yesterday), then i have ski training (i ski race) on sat and sun. i will probably run again monday, wend, etc.

one run question: i started to build my base in november and basically just ran the same distance every other day for a few weeks (3ish miles), after a few weeks, i did one 4 mile/week, one 5 mile/week, etc. i started upping it to 5 and 6 miles, every other day (skiing is messing me a up a little bit). so my question is:

should i continue my 3 x week (or every other day) runs all with the same distance (5-6 miles), or should i do one lsd (7-8 miles), one tempo (maybe 3.5-4 miles) and one other? my goals are these:
1/2 marathon in march (if our ski team doesn't make nationals, and if i feel ready)
12 K in early may
1/2 marathon in late May (most definetly)
also short triathlons mixed in.

thanks!

Got my first PT visit set up for tomorrow morning... Bright and early at 7:30am. Should be fun.

Other than that I am on the IR list for now. Probably will get to the pool Tuesday for a little swimmy... I just want to clear it with the PT people before I do anything. Doctor said scale way back for the next 2-3 weeks so I don't know if that means no activity or just no leg specific work (ie. running, biking)

i would go crazy if it were no activity.  since he didnt specify what scale way back meant, i would be hopping (one legged of course) into that pool lots!!  good luck J!! we are with you in spirit!!

Looks like it for now. They are a little concerned about me swimming because kicking does activate your hips and hamstrings... I negotiated down to no long distance and no kick drills and the PT guy bit on that one.

I can also do light recovery spins which was nice to hear. So it looks like I am going to be a gym and pool monkey for the next couple months.

Sorry for the delay, not sure how I missed this.  You are better off looking for variety in pacing and distances as different runs accomplish different things.  I used to hammer ever run and run the same general distance and gradually work up the distance at the same pace.  This usually led to some kind of injury eventually.  Your slower, longer runs help establish most efficiently your aerobic base, the base that allows you to grow as a runner.  If your run base isnt strong, I would keep away from the tempo stuff at first and concentrate on two of the 3-4 milers and if you can, keep eeking that long run up to 10+.  Even if I am racing short course, I find that trying to do that 10+er once a week helps tons in developing as a runner.  Keep it easy but I will admit if I am frisky I might add in the occassional interval work.  Variety is what is key though.

Thanks for the feedback Jszat -- i'm hoping to do a 10 miler here in a couple weeks - i did 8.4 yesterday, and felt pretty good (in ice/snow as well, and single-low teens temps). as far as tempo stuff, i was just thinking about doing some 3-4 mile runs in feburary at a faster-similar to race pace (8:30 maybe?)

I would splash in the faster stuff easy at first.  I have done fartlek stuff for ever and had good success.  Just find that mailbox or lightpole up ahead, pick up tempo til ya get there, and repeat as ya feel.  Work those intervals up in frequency and length as ya go on.  Once you feel comfy with those, start to look to use duration or distance to hold paces.  Mix it up to keep it fun.  Also, make sure you warm up with some easier pacing at the first 10 mins or so.  I used to just shoot out of the box but if you build weekly volume, you need to take care and make sure you are warm before getting into the speedy stuff.  Just my two cents.

So what your saying is, during normal runs, just throw in a little speed stuff, such as run faster to the lightpole, etc? and just add those in a couple times per run and slowly work up to it. i've read the same thing about cycling - doing short 30-45 sec. burts, and i noticed it picked up my cruising speed every time i did it.

And after i am used to throwing in short bursts frequently, do a 3-4 mile run at a faster pace, or something like that?

sounds like you have the basice premise down ultra.  here's a thought.........on successive three runs, do the first one for 3-4 miles, the second one maybe a tad bit longer 4-5, but slow down the pace just a tad, but also throw in some "surges" for aprx 30-45 secs (about 200 meters or so), try to get about 7-10 or so in on that run.  the third run have be your longer distance day (like 8 - 10 or so)................make sense?

you will find that your "pace" will end up a tad quicker overall.

Dinner for mom's bday tonight.  I am leaning more and more towards a run in the cold tomorrow cuz sick like that and treaddy not seeming appealing.  Big Donkey get together (about 20 BTers), Sunday AM 90-120 spin and hopefully see the Pack take care of bidness.  Should be fun.

you are just too gangsta - i recommend running in the cold - i haven't ran in temps over 30 in a few months (aside from some treadmill runs, but those suck!), the packers are going all the way, down with the giants, and patriots!

Well, I had to fire someone today.  That was fun.  Might end up having to fire another one, but I think I might be able to get away with a write up on that one.  It will not be a pleasant place here for awhile.

I'm going swimming tonight...1100 yards is on the block.  I might just go more to relieve stress, or sit my azz in the hot tub for awhile.  Don't know yet.  Saturday is a 50 min run and a 1 hour bike on Sunday.

Going to the Donkey par-tay on Saturday...should be good times (we'll need mucho pics, Joe!) and I plan on drinking some...Sunday church and then probably watching the game...or I'll go shopping (the stores will be like ghost towns...heh).
