Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() First - thank god for this Forum - our spring forum is dead as a doornail... Swam in the morning and run in the evening. Decent workouts... Right now, I feel like I'm just putting in the time but not making a ton of improvement in speed. In the pool - I'm finally back to where I was in April 2:37 per 100... No one will ever confuse me with Michael Phelps... Although we both have six packs... |

Started college last week. Start work tomorrow. Start new training plan next week. Went for a 20 miler last night. moderately intense pace. Knee held up. I'm thinking 1 more of these peiced together weeks where I test it, then I should be good to go to start really moving forward on HIM plan. I'm going to start a 20 week maintanance plan geared at picking up where I left off and hoping to improve upon my times from the summer. Hoping all is well with everyone else. Good luck with all your beginings Kevin and I'm glad to hear that you are almost back in business in regards to the knee. Which plan are you going to do? I plan on starting my HIM training once I get done with my HM in November. I'm starting to think that I want to do two HIM and an IM next year. Go hard or go home. Just for the record, I have no plans or desire to even think about pulling a DH To wash down the pulled pork, my friend and I are gonna try some homebrew that has more hops in it than dogfish 120. Based upon the smell of it going in the Keg, it might just be outstanding. Go big or go home on both next years race plans, and the homebrew. That's outstanding. I am doing a plan based on my HIM times off of this site. With the gold membership comes the ability to plug your times in and create your own plan based on how often you want to work out, and such. I am going to do 2 20 week cycles of HIM plan and put some fluff inbetween so that the second HIM plan ends on the date of My HIM next year. Sounds pretty cool. I was thinking of investing in the gold membership myself... How adaptable is it... In a perfect world I'd like to find a plan that would get me ready for Boston in April and a HIM in June and July and an IM in September. Is there that kind of adaptability in the plans that are offered at the gold level? Plus I need to find a plan that would help me to improve my speed in all three disciplines. Thoughts? Truthfully, What I said above is all I know about the gold level plans. It's convenient to plug in the times from your event, and it develops the plan to follow based on your times in all 3 events. I like this. I do not know enough about the rest of the "gold" perks to recommend the $. To me, it's worth it to develop the plans, but I'll know more after Aug. of next year to recommend whether it's worth it or not. Those are lofty goals David. Hope to be here to help and support you any way possible. Can't wait to see them happen. 5:00:00 or bust! That's the goal for next year's HIM. I'm considering switching the coors light to keystone, narural light, or old milwuakee, if I bust. thoughts? Bold! 5 hours should be in your wheelhouse. If you can improve the speed on your swim and continue to kick on your bike and run, I'd say you already have it in the bag. As for the motivation - I think you can choose any of those beers but you need to leave it in the trunk of your car for a month before the race so it's nice and skunked. That should provide enough motivation. best training advice ever! I am going to do this. (after I send you your beer card!) Finally - the homebrew that my friend made with more hops than dogfish 120... Simply incredible... Drinking some now after my run. Does. Not. Get. Any. Better.

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() "F'n A cotton" I'm declaring the knee pain gone as of right now! I'm going to round this week out with recovery type workouts and start a new HIM 20week plan next Monday. Yeah, the Spring group, it never really took off. Oh well. Whatever you guys are up for, I'm in. Darren- That is an amazing endeavor you are taking on this weekend, so much so, that it almost seems unreal. You will do well. You will finish. You are an inspiration to us. 100 miles is easily equivelant to countless beers. Call it a recovery drink! Thor- I expect to see 1 more workout logged per week now that your not playing hockey every week! Make it happen. 190 or Bust! David- I honestly did not need a ton of nutrition on HIM. I used a solid (fish; I recommend something else) for the first half of ride. I would pop in a bite sized piece each 10 min. or so. I had 4 20 oz. bottles of fluid on my bike. 2 with gatoraid, and 2 with a powergel/water mix. 4 gels per bottle. I drank 1 drink of gatoraid, then 1 drink of mix about every 10 min. I popped a powergel at T2, drank 1 cup of water, and Heed at each aid station (about 1-1.5 miles) and popped a gel at about 6 miles and 9 miles in. I ate 2 peices of toast w/jam and a 2 banana's before the race. My race was 80-90's with a high of 96 for the day. Lots of fluids on the run, but not too much. You'll know if it's to much if it starts sloshing around in your stomach. Too little, and you'll bonk. Dial it in in the next 4 weeks during your training. Hope this helps. |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Kevin....I don't really use the plans on the website. Seems horribly complicated to me though. I think there is some online coaching available.......but if you want to cobble together a plan and throw it out here we can try to work it out. Start with your goal races, work in some taper and recovery, fill in the gaps with some mileage and some intensity.....I don't want to be harsh on coaches or anything but it isn't rocket science and it is largely dependent on what you are capable of doing which most of us don't know until we try. |
![]() ![]() |
Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() David, Nutrition on a HIM is horrible. Keep in mind that whatever you eat on the bike is going to run right through you on the run, but it could come out on mile 1 or mile 15(in which case you won't have to worry about it). Trial and error. |

BUT, I have gotten the most important thing out of the way, bought warm up and cool down beers. Also, my buddy is coming down to do the 100k, thought he would bail but he went and booked a hotel today so that will make it a good time. So yeah, got the beers, so more or less ready to go. |

I like the idea of doing recovery workouts to set yourself up for a good start to your HIM training. Speaking of training - you;ve got to go out and grab a copy of triathlete magazine. It's all about how to qualify for Kona. Might just be the perfect this to page through this weekend to get you fired up for the next stage in your training. Thanks again for the support... People keep asking me how I've managed to lose all the weight and it's gotten me thinking of how important you all have been in my journey to this point. Crucial in the truest sense of the word. So - I too want to make sure we all stick together and support each other along the way. I'm committing to a life time of excercise so feel free to come out here and kick mY a$$ if I try to weasle out. In return, I will help you all achieve your goals in anyway I can. I'd suggest we should all get together sometime in the next couple of years to run a race but I can only imagine the hangover... 9 miles tomorrow... A warm up for Darren but a serious step closer for me. Gonna really take it nice and slow and try to average around 12 minute miles... My hips, knees and feet are in decent shape and I'm icing as I type this. I'm also gonna play around with nutrition to try to get that figure out.

Just a thought. after 60 min. pop a gel. I then go every 24 minutes, no more than 30, with a gel beyond that. I carry my own water, and sip every mile. I also am suceptible to cramping in later miles, so I take more gels than most to try to counterbalance. You need to play around with this during your runs and dial it in for you. David, just looking at your logs...wondering if you are jacking up your mileage on your runs too much? Not much use jacking up the run quickly only to be a) too sore to do anything for a couple of days or b)get hurt. I would try get in more runs at a little higher mileage then going for the gusto with a 9 miler. Either way, good job on sticking to your training! Ahh, the hangover! I think it would be a great idea to meet somewhere for a race! Of course coordinating schedules and finances would be a gargantuan task! It would be an IPA binge of epic proportions! |

The above is what I do during marathons. Not sure how that would equate to you on your HM, but whatever works on these training runs, you want to incorporate into you HM and HIM plans. I'd suggest we should all get together sometime in the next couple of years to run a race but I can only imagine the hangover... about this. Would this be like one of those "hangover" movies, or "what happen in Vegas stays in Vegas" deals? If so... Count me in. Now how to convince the wife that this would be a good idea...
Thor - it's a fear of mine as well. That's why I'm lying on my couch icing my ITB band... I agree with you about the ramp up but I feel like I have to push it a little bit to make sure I can finish the race (or better yet make myself believe I can finish the race). So - my plan is to listen to my body and play it by ear from day to day. I may have over done it with 10 today (I had 9 scheduled - but there is 20 bucks waiting on my refridgerator to buy more beer and I will not be denied!). So if I'm sore - I will ramp it done. If there is any actual pain - I will stop. But your suggestion is a good one. Maybe I will only add a mile to my long run next week and will add some more milage to my other non brick runs. Ahh, the hangover! I think it would be a great idea to meet somewhere for a race! Of course coordinating schedules and finances would be a gargantuan task! It would be an IPA binge of epic proportions! Agreed - we'd have to plan it well in advance. But I love the idea of doing a race together. We could pick a place in a somewhat central location and bring the wives (to help us recover from our hangovers) and our kids (your son could teach my kid how to play hockey) and make a nice outing. DH - a marathon sounds kind of cool. We could also think about one of the new Rev 3 events which are supposed to have a fun atmosphere... My other motivation for getting together - to watch Kevin actually eat fish during a training run... Makes me want to puke just thinking about it... |

The swim was decent - my biggest problem was the woman who kept running into me. Drove me nuts because I kept having to pop my head out of the water to make sure our heads didn't collide. I got pi$$ed when she actually stopped to put on her flippers WHILE STANDING IN MY LANE! The run was good. I ran to our local school to vote in our primary election and ended up sweating all over the registration table - the old ladies were really grossed out... Then I ran around town and finally ended up on the cross country paths where I did most of my run... I was supposed to go for 9 - but I felt decent and so I pushed it to 10. (finished at 10.66) The only thing that was sore was my left knee which felt a little better once I stretched. I agree that I'm probably pushing the running milage too much... but running long is helping me to learn what I need to improve for race day. The eating is getting better. I took your advice and poped some gels - and I also enjoyed a Gu block. Where I need to work is my drinking. I am not drinking enough. I have probably drunk 40 oz of water since getting home 4 hours ago and still haven't peed....Might have to imbibe some beers to rehydrate. Next week, I'm going to go out on some 1 hour training runs and try to calculate my sweat rate. I think I'm losing somewhere between 20 and 30 oz of water per hour... Gonna sleep well tonight - but not as well as DH will sleep I bet... |

Goals for Sunday's race:
Stopping by the Malibu Triathalon the following Sunday to hopefully get a glimpse of Chrissy. Then maybe one more sprint and start adding the strength training. But for now one thing at a time...race this weekend. Cynthia With thoughts of warm Coors lite dancing in your head, I think you will crush this race and surprise yourself! Where is your race at? X2. Coors lite is my un-motivator for every race now. I use it for getting my a-- out the door to mow the lawn, I use it to take out the trash after a long day, and I definitely use it to fuel my motivation for finishing ahaed of all my goals. You will do great and will beat your times from last year. Go after it! |

Gonna sleep well tonight - but not as well as DH will sleep I bet... This is a good post! I love it when you come on here with quality material such as this. I get super hyper-sensitive during pool workouts and colliding w/ others. I one time looked up at the other end of the pool to see that a woman had joined my lane w/o announcing herself. I had no idea how long she'd been swimming in my lane as I was doing long sets and had been swimming for a half hour at that point. I have no idea how many times I almost collided with her, but I was shell shocked for the rest of the workout. Sounds as if there's no pain during the run. Limited soreness after the run. I'd say your in good shape. To hydrate for all my runs over 9 miles, I carry up to 70oz. cammelback and drink a good sip or two each mile. less water for shorter runs, more water for longer runs. I've also heard of stashing bottles along the course, but that always seems to time consuming for me. Beer should help in this matter of hydration your having. Stay Thirsty |
