quasimodo63 - 2012-11-16 8:15 PM So I have 170 pounds of lean mass, and 23 ish pounds of fat.  Weight loss is over.  It's now time to maintain.

Very nice confirmation of the incredible journey you are on!  Now on to the next phase.

Steve, thanks for your advice.  Took it in and and went 13.7 today.  1st 10 were good; last 3+ a struggle, but nothing fell off.  Rt foot and rt hip hurt, but not in a show stopping way.  My miles were stacked towards the end of this week even though they were at easy pace.  And miles 11/12 today had some pretty good hills that I walked a bit on.  Maybe I'm just expecting it to be easier than I should at this point, but getting through it was good.

Steve - way to go! That is totally awesome.

Larry - another goal off the list. Nicely done!

Carol - glad to see the swagger coming back a bit. It will be interesting for me when I start rebuilding to see how I handle it.

Life is starting to get back to normal although I wish I could say there were a lot more work outs. It has been swim focus. Some nice work with 500yrd continuous swims, getting up to 5x100 yard freestyle repeates. The coach challenged me to keep up with the kids the other day working 50yrd on a minute and I should skip every third repeat. I did pretty good keeping up for about 5 sets. Also found a local bike shop that set up a bike loft for spin classes which I hope to get in on soon.

Not sure what is going on with me, but feel like I'm falling apart in a couple spots. My right foot is still hurting from last week. It starts at the right side (right foot) and seems to spread across my foot to the other side. Not a heel-to-toe, but side to side. I'm going to rest & stretch it for a couple days and see how it goes.  My left hip/glute area is also occasionally painful. Feels like a cross between an upper left hammy strain and a painful left hip. If I rub it, it feels better. Does this sound like a possible ITB thing?

I'll keep on swimming/biking in the mean time. I do have the local turkey trot coming up thursday, and I'll be heading out with my 9 year old daughter (the other triathlete in the family!). She likely can't run the whole 5k, so we are doing a run/walk thing. Hope she enjoys it. I know I will.

Hope everyone has a great Thanksgiving!!!

Hey Joe, glad you guys have emerged from the storm aftermath.  Nice swimming!  I think your body will thank you for shifting focus for a while.

Mike, I feel you on the falling apart thing.  I have had IT Band issues off and on, and am currently struggling with pain in my glute med.  Ideally would go to the sports chiro for some ART and PT sessions, but short of that tennis ball and foam roller are helpful.

Yesterday was a scary day.  My husband was hit by a drunk driver.  He was less than a mile from home on his way to church, stopped at a light, and other driver came down the wrong side of the road and hit him head on, pushing his car back about 30 feet.  God definitely protected him, as the car is totaled, but Kerry checked out OK at the hospital other than a sore neck/shoulder.  Let's just say it's very easy to be thankful this week.  Driver refused a breathalyzer test, but was arrested and police were getting a warrant to test his blood.  Hope he is off the road for a long, long time.

Holy smokes, Carol! Glad to hear he seems to be OK. To walk away from that is certainly a fortunate thing. Hope the idiot who caused it gets his due.

Carol, thank God it wasn't more serious.  Prayers to your husband and family.

Mike, that stinks about the run.

I'm still hanging in there.  I've only been biking because of the sore foot.  I think it's better, then it gets sore again.  I am now enjoying maintaining my weight instead of trying to lose it.  I'm still eating good food (lean protein, complex carbs, fruits and vegetables) but just more of them.  I'm letting myself eat a junky meal here and there too.  I know I will always have to watch what I eat to some degree.

Carol - So glad to hear Kerry is not seriously hurt. Too many times that is real bad news for the sober one. Count your blessings this Thanks giving, I know I will at least I have power and my home is in tact.

Mike - Enjoy that turkey trot with your little triathlete. My girl did not want to run this year. Funny she is almost begging to be on the winter track team, like swimming competitively is not enough, but does not want to run. She is getting close to those teen years, so I am thankful she is happy, healthy, and still talking to us.

There is a local turkey trot my friend invited me to but I think I will save the cash and enjoy a run on my own. As fun as it sounded, the last month has been crazy, and I really have nothing to prove. This has been one incredible year for my health and fitness. I have a lot to be thankful for and joining this group and sharing in all your journey's has been a real blessing that I am grateful for. The swim coaches were away at a golden goggles award ceremony, and asked me to sit on deck which was cool. Ed and Aileen with the Jersey Gators have help push me along as well, so thanks to them. Anyway-- Happy Thanksgiving all, in case I do not get online again until later.

Have a Happy Thanksgiving, everyone!  If there is one day a year you should not feel guilty about eating whatever, I think tomorrow is it. I'm not thinking of counting calories tomorrow

For those heading out to the local "Turkey Trot" have a fun day.

Tough day at the pool (workout, not problems) and I did my first ever attempts at diving off the starting blocks. Starting to get the hang of it, but a couple of awful looking attempts to start off .

Happy Thanksgiving!

Joe, you are so right...it has been an awesome year, thanks to our families, friends, and this encouraging group!  Good to take some time and enjoy!

Larry, sorry the foot is still bothering you.  Your journey is so much more than a diet because you have made sustainable changes.   Due to the diabetes, being aware of everything I eat is a lifelong thing with me as well.  I don't always eat perfectly, but the long term perspective is just a different mindset.

Mike, have fun w/ your kiddo at the Turkey Trot!

Kerry is amazingly fine after the accident. So very thankful for that.  This was not the other driver's first rodeo with drunk driving.  Must have been some night he had to still be so wasted at 7:00 am.  I'm hoping he hit the magic number of offenses that keeps him off the road!

10 miler this morning nice and slow.  Prepayment for tomorrow because, as Mike pointed out, there will be a few extra calories consumed.  Roasting a turkey breast instead of the whole bird this time, so will see how that goes.

So who uses a heart rate monitor while working out? I'm thinking of getting so I can hopefully bring some consistency to what I'm doing with my workouts. I'd like to try to actually measure what i'm doing, and have some baselines so I can not only measure progress, but keep tabs on my efforts during workouts. Wildly inconsistant at times, and I'd like to start to take this a bit more seriously. SO, with 'Black Friday' and all that, I'm thinking of making the leap to a Garmin 910xt. That will be my single biggest tri gift this year.

Carol sorry and happy about your hubby.  Yes folks come into the ER with blood alcohol levels that would have any of us dead ... and they stopped drinking 6 hours ago.  We had one guy in who had not been sober in 15 years, at all not ever in that time frame.

Ya my body has been telling me that I need to let it get all healed up, so no workouts at all this week.  Gona try to get all rested up and then rebuild strating 1/1/13.

I have been super buisy at work, I may take Friday off or I may end up working this whole week.  Way lot of reall life stuff going on right now.  Feel free to back it off and get healthy this time of year.  You don't want to start toasted at the beginning of the season.

And yes Friday is a good time to buy stuff at near 50% off.  Stock up on shoes, tires, etc..  Heart rate monitor is good for working intensity when running and doing intensity on the bike.  I used it more last year than this year as I kind of know where I want to be intensity wize by feel and pace.  I didn't quite get to the point where I needed to monitor it that closely this year, but wil probably use it on the bike this winter and then again when I get back into doing 800 repeats and hill repates in the spring.  However I use the pace meeter on the garmin daily on my runs, would be lost without it.

HELLO EVERYONE AND HAPPY THANKSGIVING! I'm sure you noticed I've been MIA, but fortunately there has been action in my life. Not what my training plan has called for, but I am working on doing what I can on a daily basis. I have also been doing small amounts of core work. Transitioning from outdoor training to indoor is...interesting. Everything takes longer and the bike seat seems even more uncomfortable, but things are picking up for me. I watched IM Kona on Youtube and it was very inspiring. I feel like I am still getting stronger and that makes me happy. Spent a couple days at a cabin with some friends and we did a four hour hike with no trail, it was foggy and there was snow - it was beautiful!

Steve - so bummed about the whole IM/HIM thing, but so excited about your athlete of the year. What a sweet way to end a rough year. I hope you can get some time off this week and enjoy the celebration. Have you heard about Infinite's sale on MOnday?

Carol - so very glad to know Kerry is okay. Way to continue increasing your miles for running every month!

Larry - I tell my friends about you. Wasn't 12% your goal? I love that you reached it without having to struggle through the last 1-2% because you were already doing everything right. Can't wait to see the pics! Hope that foots quits giving you grief.

Joe - glad things are getting back to normal. I can't wrap my mind around what it would be like to deal with that much damage and change in life.

Mike - you are going for it! Love the quote!

Jim - Hi!

Steve, glad to see you are taking a break.  If anyone needs it, it's you.

Samantha, good to see you back.  Life gets busy sometimes, doesn't it.

Mike, I used a heart rate monitor religiously for 8 months.  I loved it.  As I moved into training for the half marathon, I got away from it as I got a good feel for pace, but I've got a feeling I'll go back to it.  It's a great way to make sure you are in the right zone.  Kept me from going to easy or too hard.  I also just used a cheapie from Wal Mart.  If I had a good one, I'd probably still be using it.

Turkey trot was a big success. We had 7 family members running (me, my 2 daughters, 2 teen cousins, brother in law, and a family friend who was like family). My youngest decided she would run with one of her cousins and not me, so I ended up semi solo. Felt good, but stopped about 1.5 miles in to check on my youngest & her cousin. I waited in one spot for about 5 minutes for them to come by, and when they didn't show, I started walking back on the course. Finally found them, and they were doing a casual run/walk thing. Gave a bit of encouragement, then started running again with their blessing. Finished at 32 min on the nose, including my near 6 minute stop to check on the kids, so overall it wasn't a bad time (under 27 min actual running time). My 12 year old finished in 25:20, and enjoyed talking smack to me all day about beating me.

After I was done I went back to the final turn to await my 9 year old & her cousin. They finally showed, and I ran in with the 2 of them. She was really tired at the end, but I was SO proud of her for doing it. Her time was about 44 minutes, but for a 9 year old's first 5k, its a great PR. Both my girls did great today, and everyone had a blast.

Was going to get on the trainer this AM, but I feel awful. Total food coma still in effect. Plus my upper left hammy is sore still, so I need to be careful with that, and roll it out a bit today.

Hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving!!!

Mike - That sounds like so much fun to have so much family really must have made a special thanks giving. I think getting back in shape this year helped me enjoy the food that much more. Great job with all the PR's. I have not used a HR monitor but think it would be a good tool.

I did a turkey trot of my one completing 3.16 in 29:49. The lack of running for the past month could be felt but I was glad to see a comfortable pace and finish under 30 minutes. Off to the pool tonight.

Hey all, sounds like some great Thanksgiving celebrations!  Good to be on the other side of the food fest though...or are we ?

Thanks for the well wishes for my husband.  He is fine, and we have moved on to the all American passtime....car shopping.

Steve, wow, not sure how a body survives 15 years of being pickled!  Maybe a blessing that work has stepped up since your training needs to step down. MTA: how is your son's cross country season coming along?

Samantha!  So glad to see you!  That hike in the snow sounds magical!  You and your friends must have some good navigational skills.  Glad life is picking up for you in good ways.

Joe, way to trot off that turkey!  Nice time, and fun to just have that baseline of fitness to go out an run when you feel like it.

Larry, bet you would love a Garmin!  I had no idea how much I "needed" one until it was given to me as a gift years ago.  I'm now on my 3rd one.

Mike, you have every right to be so proud of your daughters.  LOL on the bragging rights.  Sounds like you have a great and fun relationship w/ them.  On the HR stuff -- I've used a Garmin w/ HR monitor for a long time.  I have primarily used the HR monitor to keep from starting off too fast for my own good in races/training runs.  Also to figure out an estimate of my LT.  Can't say I've used that info to its fullest (yet).  I will say that it has taken a LONG time (as in years) for me to see ANY progress in running same/faster with lower HR's.

Long runs are still not going well.  Bailed out after almost 11 on a planned 15 yesterday.  Feet are really aching once I approach/go over 10 miles, and taking longer to recover even though I'm not making it any further.  So I'm considering whether to shift focus to training for the half at Cowtown instead of the full.

Mike - what a great day you had with your family. Super excited your daughters did so well.

Carol - sorry things are going smoothly with your training. Have you considered giving things a rest and trying again, or did you already do that? So thankful Kerry is fine. Happy car shopping!

The weather has been so nice here in the northwest. Today I got my 10 mile run in and other than my legs feeling pushed it went well.  I also got 35mi. on the the trainer Friday.

Nice run AND ride, Samantha!  I tried taking a couple rest days in a row a couple weeks ago, but not enough I guess.  So I'm going to dial it down this week to minimize the pounding on my feet and dust off my bike.  It's unseasonably warm here, so good timing on that.

I've been dealing with a sore upper left hammy issue the past week, and it is still somewhat uncomfortable. Didn't help that I had to do a few sets of lunges at my core training session on Saturday -- now my butt hurts on both sides! .  Should be fun going back there tonight; nothing says fun like pain on a Monday night.

Foot is feeling better, so I'll either do an easy run or a bike session tomorrow AM.  It may snow, too, so its truly getting to feel like winter here.

Only 12 days until my swim meet. Yikes!

Hey gang still snowed at work, but in another 12 hour day.  I will be out of town for almost 2 weeks so hang in there if my hotel does not have internet for less than $20 a night.  There is a massive sale of 2XU stuff atm.  Tri shorts and tops $35 instead of $75 to 100, wetuits everything is the cheapest I have seen in 5 years and free shipping.  Yes I like 2XU and get a minor sponsorship from them, but these prices are better than the break I get on their gear.  If you are in the market this is a buy time.  Shoes are so/so atm rougly 30 percent off and race tires are 50% off, helmets are 35 to 50% off.

Carol, you need to listen to your body.  It sounds like you are stuck in the same point I was needing some reduction in workout to recover.  Hope things work out.

I'm a big fan of 2XU stuff, but seems I'm a day late to the party with the sale as most things in my size are gone.

Race planning for 2013 is underway, and I realized my June/July will be busy and wanted to get some feedback from folks. As of now its looking like:

June 15th -- Half ironman

June 30th -- sprint

July 14th -- Oly

While I think this is completely doable, anyone think this is too much in too short a time period? The sprint on 6/30 is our local tri, and quite frankly will be nothing more than a fun race for me. The HIM on 6/15 will be an A race, and the Oly on 7/14 will be a fun race (NYC Tri). I also have another HIM in August on the 18th which will be an A/B race.  September will  be a final nearby spring race for fun. I'm not concerned about that one.

Steve, hope you have a great vacation!  Just wanted to thank you again for all that you have poured into all of us this year (and some of us last year).  You have made a big difference in how I look at tri/running/life.

Mike, that swim meet is coming up fast!  Time to prove your coach right .  I'm sure Steve can answer your race schedule question best re: performance and impact on training.  But I'll throw out a couple of considerations.  Can you wait to pull the trigger on some of your non-A races until a couple weeks before or do they sell out?  Have you raced that frequently in the past and enjoyed it, or does it reach a level of race burnout for you at some point?

No runs for the last couple days, and didn't get my bike act together in time to ride yesterday.  Mainly just walking the dogs, reassessing and catching up on some work/life for a few days.  Thankfully the rest of the low carb (but not low calorie), pumpkin cheesecake from Thanksgiving is now gone, but I'm not going to say exactly how that happened .  No cyber Monday spandex purchase for me!

Hope everyone is heading towards a non-frenzied (or frenzied if you like it that way) Christmas season.

Steve, the deals sound good.  I'll check them out.  Mike, heck with it.  Do them all.  I'm going to look online for a Garmin and give not so subtle hints for x mas.

Foot still sore, so I'm just biking, and focusing on weight lifting a lot more.  I'm at the maintenance stage of eating, and actually finding it hard to eat 3500 calories a day of nutritional stuff.  If you haven't tried it, I'd recommend Quinoa.  it's sort of like a grain and sort of like a seed.  you can eat it like rice, or as breakfast with a little honey and cinnamon.  It is legitimately one of the most nutritious and healthy founds on the planet.
