Nice long bike this morning despite wet conditions then an easy run tonite.

-Chris- Keep your chin up and be proud of the fact that you got out there and did the race. Think of how many people would have given up the entire season instead of fighting back thru the rehab all spring.  You did great!

-Andy- Good luck tomorrow!  Have fun!

-Ernesto- Way to battle the elements and get it done!

Well, let me first say that it was some tough s#!+!!!!!! I found myself shivering cold (low 40s, 35mph wind and rain) for three hours before my start. The shuttle dropped us in transition too darn early and the wait was desperating. The swim was by far the toughest ever, water at 57 degrees, I had to stop in the second buoy and literally tread water for about a minute, totally disoriented and confused. I actually considered waving the boat to pick me up but after a little I gained composure and kept going. The rest of the swim was ok except the last 400 yards, when I started suffering hypothermia. I got to T2 and I just sat by my bike not knowing what to do, in a severe cold condition. The bike was into the NW wind (shortened to twelve miles) and I got in a rhythm after three or four miles, but frozen. The bike was very un eventful and I managed to keep my core warm(er), but my feet were completely frozen. The run was good, my feet started tingling around mile three and after that I started feeling normal, my splits were pretty even until mile eight and then I decoupled a bit until the finish. Ate and went to the hotel to take a shower to warm up. Not coming back to Boise by the way, despite the beautiful town and people. The weather is too unpredictable.

That's bad luck Ernesto. I can imagine how disappointing iris to have trained so hard and then it all go to sh## because of the weather. I was following a few on twitter and everyone had a tough time. Still a good race for you considering the weather.

Some incredible stats, in my AG 162 people finished, 4 DNFs and an astonishing fifty people showed up to the race site and didn't start the race. Another one: many pros, and many age groupers did their bike portion WITH THE WETSUIT ON to avoid hypothermia. Wow!

Ernesto, glad you survived the cold. Hope you don't get sick from it... Bike with the wetsuit on is a new concept! I love it. I remember not being able to put my bike gloves on after a swim in 54F water at Racine HIM. The fingers were stiff and I had no feeling in them.

It is good to remember how bad weather can screw up lots of effort in preparation for a race, specially if you don't do many races a year.

Today I did a 1:39min run (early in the morning in rain and cold wind)  and 31min swim at lunch.

chris2533 - 2012-06-09 11:39 PM Rachel, That looks to me like classic heat induced decoupling. You are correct that starting at mile 10 you had to go slower each mile to keep your heart rate roughly constant. Then you had a hill at mile 13 until the end (15 miles) and your heart rate went up with the hill (not surprising).

Beats me what to advise. Run more in the heat I guess. If you get better advise, tell me.

That's good advice.  Now to figure out how to control the weather Wink  We've been all over the place recently, with a week at 80 degrees, followed by 40 degrees the next week.  Yesterday I had heavy, cold rain/overcast but really quite hot/burning sunshine all within the space of a 2.45 run!  I'm just hoping that the week we have in Switzerland before the race is going to be enough to at least slightly acclimatise to the temperature.

I actually think that yesterday's biggest mistake was not drinking enough in the morning before I went out.  I think I started off a little dehydrated and then when it was hotter than I expected it just made it worse.  Another lesson learned...

Ernesto - that sounds like really tough conditions (although I have to admit the image of people cycling in wetsuits made me smile).  Well done for fighting through it and getting a great run time in despite it all.  Hope you're recovering from all that cold.

I went to the track this morning with Jennie to do a run this morning.  I did the first 0.43 miles (two laps) in my Five Fingers and it felt pretty good.  Next time I'll up it to three laps.  Overall the run was 4.77 miles in 40:00 with an avg HR of 144.  Amazing what happens when running at MAF when there are no hills.

Andy - well done on the great result.  I know you're a good swimmer, but I'd kill for that swim time (between your swimming and Chris' running I've got some serious exercise envy going on at the moment...)

I'm currently in that stage of weight loss where I sit around the same weight for ages getting really frustrated.  Fortunately I know that eventually it will suddenly drop, and then sit at a new weight for ages.  Hopefully that will be soon ;-)

Today I cycled 100 miles for the first time.  Despite it being Sunday and an ideal day to find people to ride with, I landed up being ditched by my planned training partner and so did the whole thing solo, except for about 15 miles towards the end where a random stranger cycled up next to me and then stayed there, talking to me, until our routes separated.

I cycled down to Ellerton, which is where our club does open water swimming, and today was the venue for the Cleveland Short Course Triathlon (it's an olympic distance tri).  A bunch of people from the club were taking part, so I caught up with some of them and refilled my water bottles before heading round part of the triathlon route then home.

I'm really pleased with how the ride went.  The pace was pretty good (for me), and I maintained it for the whole ride.  I also practiced my nutrition and hydration strategy and it went well.  The only thing I picked up during the ride was water, and my HR stayed nice and low all the way through.  After this ride I'm feeling much more confident about my plan for the IM bike ride.

Rachel, great ride! This is the most important element by far. Looks like you are on track. And well done on the nutrition too, it pays to be self sufficient, don't count on what they offer on course, sometimes they run out of what you need.
