Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Larry -- I like your attitude. BTW -- how can you eat 3500 calories a day and not blow up like a tick? I'll likely do them all and use the first HIM (my bike crash race from earlier this year) as my "A" race, the sprint as a "C" race, the oly as a "B" and the other HIM as an "A/B" type. Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hey Larry, I ate some Quinona yesterday for lunch! I think a mixture of Quinona and Couscous. Anyway, don't know if you have Costco in your neck of the woods, but they sell it in pre-made frozen 1-2 serving packs that you nuke 3 minutes in the microwave and it's pretty darned good. Mike, so did you master the whole diving off the blocks thing? Nice timing on the REI catalog arrival! Ran 6.5 easy miles today after 3 days off (except for dog walks). Aches and pains were minimal. Going to try just keeping my distances at 10 miles or less for a while. Seems to be what my body is asking for, so will give it what it wants. Appreciating the gift. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Carol, I've avoided any belly flops, and actually did a couple respectable starts. coach videotaped a couple, and my lord, is that difficult to watch. ("I look like *that*??!!?!?). ![]() |
![]() ![]() |
New user![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Carol, that is awesome. We do have a Cotsco near bye. Great tip. Mike, any time we video tape ouselves it looks worse than we think. I will avoid inappropriate comment about a personal video tape experience, just kidding. Anyway, still just biking for 30 minutes four times a week and lifting weights a lot more. My new attitude is keep exercising. Right now, I'm more into the lifting, so as long as I'm doing some aerobic work, I'm not going to feel guilty. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Larry, great job on the lifting and riding. I think to make all this stuff sustainable we have to be willing to change but not quit. Oh, and the frozen/microwaveable grain is called "Good Food Made Simple -- Whole Wheat Couscous with Quinona". Bon Apetit! Mike, any entry into the pool that does not result in water up the nose is a win! Those blocks have always looked scary to me...have a feeling I'd fall in before it was time to go. Kerry wanted to ride the trainer last night after dinner, so I joined him for a 30 minute easy spin. Very convenient, and we made it fun by watching/playing wheel of fortune. Are we "old people" for watching that? I don't want to preach, but did want to share something that really leaped off the page when I was reading last night because of the parallels with running/training/etc. "Self hatred is not appropriate when God reveals a new angle. That is not the way of Christ, who abolished condemnation under the banner of grace. The wise responder humbly receives truth, allows it to supersede the version he or she is holding, and adjusts. The progression is not cause for shame but gratitude; thankful God never leaves us where we are but draws us into a richer faith." -- Jen Hatmaker Larry, you have it right in terms of adjusting and not beating yourself up. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Carol -- the perspective is spot on, especially for a MOP age grouper like myself. Its easy to get down on yourself for not being faster, fitter, and more active, yet the reality is that I/we are more active than 95% of those are age, and accepting we do what we can, and hopefully to the degree our abilities allow us is always heartening. Yesterday I smashed myself to the point of not wanting to get up today. Had a long, tough swim workout in the AM, and did 1000+ yards using hand paddles which was a real workout on the shoulders. Saw the core/strenght trainer last night, and had nothing right from the start. A brutal 1/2 hour for sure. Got home, and literally sat in my car for 5 minutes just staring at nothing as I was spent. |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Larry - sorry the foot is giving you grief. Glad you are finding ways to maintain because coming from couch to training is made more difficult where there are legitimate excuses - at least for me. Still waiting to see the updated pic of your success. And I do like quinoa Mike - I'm excited to hear the results of a swim race. I was thinking about it the other day and I think doing a race of only one of the three we are used to preparing for is kinda weird. Anyway, good work using a starting block; I can't even dive from the regular level. Carol - loved the quote and how timely words like that are. God is good! Wheel of fortune watching, eh? HMmm! Steve - looking forward to your return. I'm moving along. Got another 10mile run in, and a 2100 yard swim, which I may have already mentioned. I gonna keep the rest of November and December getting in whatever I get in with the goal to be all I have planned, but not stress out about it. But come January there will be no more of that. Did I mention I have also started a class to learn how to read New Testament Greek. Not sure why I thought doing that while training was a good idea, but I guess I don't care. 4 weeks down and 22 more to go. So far I can read words and I know what they mean. Now for all the grammar and other such language stuff. |

New user![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Carol and Samantha, you both bring so much to this group with your perspective on life, and how it translates into fitness. Awesome! Mike, there are not many people in today's society who can actually say that they physically spent themselves. Congrats to you. I picture poor Steve in some dump hotel, without internet, and an old black and white t.v. |

New user![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hopefully there is a picture with this, but who knows with my limited technology. It's not a great quality picture. I'll try to get a better one. Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Don't see any pic. I am now signed up for 2 HIM & an Oly next summer, all taking place between June 15th & August 18th. Time to get moving!! |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Larry - Your wife must love the new you! Mike - you are gonna have quite the event-filled year. Please don't fall off your bike again |
![]() ![]() |
Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Larry -- I'm going out on a limb here and saying you likely look quite different now than you did Jan 1, no? I will absolutely stay upright on the bike! No more crashes. |

Member![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Mike - good luck with the master swim event. That sounds like a lot of fun. Picking out your events for next year must be a lot of fun. Carol - I think many of us in the group can more fully appreciate the old saying there but for the grace of god go I. It has not been a very relaxed holiday season yet I am very thankful for the new lifestyle. Samantha - way to keep at it. Glad to hear from you.Larry - looks like your plan is working very well. Congrats!Just finished about 1600 yards swimming. A light day after 3100 yards Thursday. Hit another goal by swimming 10x100 yards freestyle Thursday. So it has been a good week. Totally missed the thanks giving goal of 205 and added a couple to boot. Oh well there is still plenty to be thankful for and I can definitely feel a lot a changes and improvement. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Looks like my planned March half mary is still a TBD per the Race Director, so there's another one in late Feb which I could sign up for, but its 1.5 hours away, as opposed to 20 minutes. And if I sign up for the Feb one, than means I need to start my 12 week training plan, uh, tomorrow (really -- tomorrow). Looks like its time to get moving. And if the other March race pans out, maybe I'll just do both. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() quasimodo63 - 2012-11-30 9:01 AM I picture poor Steve in some dump hotel, without internet, and an old black and white t.v. ^^^ this cracked me up! Picturing rabbit ears w/ tinfoil for good measure. Larry, in addition to cracking the jokes, you've got quite a six pack working there. Congrats for uncovering it! Joe, hope you get to relax a bit more. Maybe all that swimming will help some. Very nice progress you are making! Mike, with that race schedule, yes, time to get running! And is it this weekend for the swim race? Sending you some good balance vibes for launching off those blocks. Samantha, grammar are overrated! Seriously, sounds like a good way to bring more depth to your reading. And hey, maybe you can conjugate verbs while riding the trainer Steve, hope you are decompressing and enjoying some family time. As Joe mentioned, the holidays are not always stress free. I seem to wind up being the "go to" person in the family for all ideas Christmas. Yes, there are worse things, so I'll try to not cuss with my santa hat on! Last week was reset week on the running front. Only ran 20 miles and got in some easy biking. Feet have settled down some, and I'm feeling pretty good. I'm dumping the Pfitzinger plan (or should I say it dumped me?!) and jumping onto this one at week 9 (http://www.runningplanet.com/training/marathon-training-beginning-competitive-runner.html). It's the same type plan I used for progressively faster halfs last year, and really seemed to agree with me. We will see how it goes and readjust as needed.

New user![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Carol, glad to see training is going well. I like to have a plan to follow as well. Can't agree more that holidays are not stress free. We just did our family Christmas picture with the kids. Every time the 2 year old was good, the 9 year old would be screwing around. I'm still at it, biking a little and lifting a lot. It's kind of nice trying to maintain my weight for the first time in my life, instead of being overweight or trying to lose. |
![]() ![]() |
Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Oh, boy, the holiday stress is fun, huh? Its only 3 weeks away, and I've done nothing to get ready. Still need to get some decorations out, get the tree decorated, etc. Oh, brother. Yes, this Friday at 5 PM or so I'll be flailing my way through a 800M freestyle race. Looking forward to the post race dinner with the family. Got up to run this AM and had to abandon my attempt. Why? Too foggy. Honestly, never seen anything like it. I live about 1/2 mile from the ocean, and we get some whacky weather but this was pea soup x100. Since it was still dark out, and despite having a headlamp, reflective vest, clothing, I didn't think any driver would be able to see me on the road, so I pushed it off until tonight. Still suffering with the sore left hammy as well. Been almost 2 weeks, and its getting better, but very slowly. Frustrating! Edited by Mike_D 2012-12-04 6:25 AM |

Elite ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hi gang, I just have a minute, but have caught up mostly on the posts. Sorry for not being in the loop. And actually I am away from family doing 40+ hours of training on psychology stuff, some of it intense some of it not so much. Still just trying to get back healthy. The HIM/Sprint/Oly is tight. You will be just recovered for the Sprint, so you may hit it pretty flat, but the oly should be fine. If you recover well from the HIM the Sprint should be ok. I just don't know how quickly you will recover yet. Carol, we are not 18 anymore... ya listening to your body can suck. Take care with your run training, glad you took the 3 days off. Nice weight loss there, good pic. 3500 calories is 2-3x what I need in a lower workout mode to maintain weight. Missing the family a bit, I will be back home late Thursday.

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Larry- I saw the fb pic of you and your wife. Handsome couple for sure. Loved the comments people were making. Yeah, if I ate 3500 calories I would weigh 3500 pounds in no time. Definitely a new and nice challenge for you ;-) Carol- so glad you took time off and are seeing a benefit. Curious to see how the new plan treats you. Age really does change things. Not to mention this time of year is often stress full! Grammar...yuk! I'm learning so much. Mike- yes, when is your swim meet again? Steve- great to hear from you. Conference sounds interesting. How is the body feeling? Glad you get home to the fam soon. So the reality is I face my self daily and need strength from someone outside myself to keep going. Yes this is the off season, but I'm too off for my own good. I often wish I was the person who relieved stress and overwhelmingness by going out for a run or whatever. I sleep. This isn't my pity party story; more just sharing my thoughts. My schedule at work is changing again, but I think the timing is perfect for getting myself into a new swing. Been thinking about starting my IM plan a month early. Not sure what the pros vs. cons are for that. I believe God is more faithful and sovereign than I will ever truly understand. Happy day all! |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Swim meet is Friday evening for me, althought the meet itself continues through the weekend. Funny to see the age group breakdown & seed times for my race. The 65-69 men's age group has 6 entries, all of whom are faster than I am. Now thats a bit humbling ![]() |
|
![]() ![]() |
New user![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Samantha, hang in there. I'm learning as I go, and staying motivated is tough sometimes. Mike, focus on your times, and the improvements you made. You're beating 100% of the people laying on the couch. Steve, glad to see you're hanging in there. |
![]() ![]() |
Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Steve -- hope all is going well with the trip, and that you are feeling better. The Sprint 2 weeks out from HIM will be a very casul/fun tri day. Nothing more, and I may treat it as the start of a training day - maybe get in a run afterwards, etc. The swim meet will be a good time. I'm sure many folks are faster than me, which is fine with me. I ain't there on business, I'm only there for fun. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hey, a Steve sighting Mike, LOL on the older guys...they must float pretty good! Whatever you do will be a PR, and what Larry said re: beating all the others, young and old, who are on the couch. Joe, great job on your swimming as well. How do you convince yourself to go to the pool in the winter? Larry, you have no doubt built some really good and sustainable eating habits. Still, do you think maintaining is tougher mentally than the losing phase? Samantha, have you thought about signing up for a running race to train for over the next month or two? Mike has got the signing up for a race thing down, so I'm betting he could find one for you Speaking of signing up...I finally pulled the trigger on Cowtown. Signed up for the full, and also the 5K the day before, which I'll run/walk with hubby. Also signing up for a local 15K in early/mid January that should fit in nicely with training, and it only costs $15.
|
![]() ![]() |
Elite ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Ya you should be fine for completing the Sprint, just probably not a PR. If you recover well you might be gtg to hit it hard though. For a HIM you are the most spent for like 4 days, start to feel better day 5 to 7 and then by day 10 usualy good to go to restart building. Samantha, you don't have to start your plan early, just build fitness as you want to so you will be ready to start your plan. If motivationally you want to start a plan to get yourself going... that's up to you. Swim only race. I would be in the elementary school lane. I am sure you will do fine. Maintaining weight is definately harder than losing it. Keeping weight where you want it is a daily act of will. Shoulder is still iffy, trying to let it heal up before I swim on it. Just as a heads up it looks like the new mentor groups will be starting up around the end of the month. I will try to get in for starting up another group and all are welcome. We will try to get some folks in who are new so you all can share your wisdom with them. I am excited about everyone's new seasons and remain a little concerned that folks take the time they need now to get all healed up and rested for another year of building. The trainings are actually very good. In one of them we got to work through one of our own trauma's in the same way we would have client work through it. Very intense. Certainly not a distance learning activity. Edited by Baowolf 2012-12-05 2:37 PM |
