Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() BigDH - 2012-09-10 9:15 AM hey guys, thanks for following me along on the weekend. It was an amazing day, excellent in most ways except for the part where I didn't finish after running for 147km and 32 hours. Very mixed feelings. Lots of highs, one incredible low. Still working through it all. Cryin' shame! Hope you heal mentally and emotionally soon. You took on a huge feat that I would never have considered...now you have inspired me to do more. The realization that I can do much more than ever could be imagined was presented when you attempted this amazing 100 mile run! 100 friggin miles! Thanks is all that there is to say to you, you have inspired! |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Race is done and no coors lite for this chicky! I did not meet all my goals but I did not come in last! I even chick'd a guy who I kept trading places with throughout the run so I had a nice strong finish. The swim was horrible! As soon as my feet hit the water they cramped pretty badly then I put my goggles on and some kind of goop was all over the lens. I couldn't get it off by the time we started and I couldn't see the entire time. Had to keep stopping to lift my goggles to site. I had a good site plan that I had practice and everything! So I may have been last in the swim but I am pretty sure two people were behind me. Did not meet either of my time goals, bike was 17 mph and run was 12. something instead of 12 or under. I had a pleasant face the majority of the time and plenty of fuel! Used a mixture of blocks and gu, gatorade and water. Just a Red Hook IPA at the beer garden...had no strength to do much more than shower, eat some chicken enchildadas and sleep! Lots of sleep...feel great today. Time to go surf! Race report when I get official results. |

Still working through it all. Wow - my heart goes out to you. Must have been a tough call to make not to finish those last couple of miles after putting in so much time and effort both in training and earlier in the race. I'm on my way to scouts, so I guess what I might say is "if you did your best, the only thing should should feel is pride in the accomplishment." Sorry man... |

Race report when I get official results. Well done. Red Hook is a sight better than coors any day. though you didn't meet all your goals, you came very close on the bike and run and you met your goal of not finishing last, which is huge. That sucks on the swim, but now you have a great experience with adversity to help shape your training for your future goals. Way to go. |

Holy crap! What an epic journey in the truest sense of the word. I know you are struggling to find peace and accept the outcome, but that emotion might be your brain agreeing with you that race is unfinshed business. If it didn't hurt to come up short, it wouldn't be unfinished. You are hard core and an inspiration. I told my cub scouts about you tonight as part of a cub master minute on doing your best. Wish you could have seen the kids faces when I told them that you were in a race that was a hundred miles long. They were impressed but they just couldn't grasp the distance. Hope you find some peace and are able to see all that you have accomplished. Be proud. Stay Thirsty... |

Speechless. I am in awe by all you accomplished. You logged more miles in a little over a day than most of us do in a month or two. You trained so hard for this and pushed yourself to those limits and pushed through. I am proud of your accomplishment and will esteem it highly as I regard my own endeavors. As I look back at those moments where I doubted myself, they were mere fractions of what you went through on Saturday. I'm proud to know you, and most of all proud of your effort. Even attempting what you did is heroic, but to go as far as you did is impressive. Great report. Epic journey. Unfinished buisiness. Whatever that looks like, you have this moving forward. Proud of you Darren. You are exempted from coors for a lifetime.

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Not a good training story. I woke today at 4:40. I got my stuff together the night before. I ate some toast, gathered my stuff, and out the door to the gym at 4:55 for swim/bike. I get 5m down the road, and realize I left my work clothes hanging on the coat rack by the door. No big. I flip a u turn, and I'm back at home and out again at 5:10. No worries. I get to the gym at 5:20 and get ready to get out to pool and realize I've left my goggles and flip flops at home. For some reason, a moment of weakness, all I can now think about is going back to bed. I drove home and hit the pillow at 5:40. I need some breakthrough. |

Eerie how similar your yesterday sounds to my today. I got out the door at 4:55 to go train at the gym. I too realized about 10 minutes down the road that I have left my iphone at home (with my ADD, its not an overstatement to say that I have a hard time doing my job without it). *^$#! I think about turning around but decide that since there is so much work at work to do, I'll just motor on. As far as the gym goes - I got my workout in... I ran nice and slow on the treadmill and managed 2 miles and got off when my hip started to ache... The pool was slow too. Not really sure why. I almost quit and then thought of the coors light I have sitting at home and decided to keep going. But it was a struggle. And the worst part was the self talk. Darren - I wouldn't have made it to 20 miles the way my brain was approaching the workout. I was all worried that I had bitten off more than I could chew in regards to the HIM. I was having visions of not making the cutoff time and how I should have signed up for the OLY... Not good. When you have your breakthrough - let me know... I could use one myself... And I know that things will be better tomorrow... just disapointed with today. |

And when you compare it to last year - it was a great race. Good call on the Red Hook... nothing like a hoppy IPA to quench your thirst after a nice race. 2) Hope your happy with your chargers... Ohio is 0-2 this weekend. With the Indians tanking, I'm putting all my hopes in OSU football and on Matt Kenseth winning the championship. |

Hope everyone is well! THe ride to work was awesome. Not only did I get to see the sun ride - but it's that time of year when the air is crisp but its not too cold. Unfortunately - the ride home was about 5 miles too long and I could feel my left hip getting sore. I thought about stopping and having my wife come pick me up, but the idea of drinking coors light didn't really appeal to me. So, I finished and spent extra time stretching but it still hurts tonight. Tomorrow, I'm gonna swim in the morning and then I might postpone my long run for a day. We shall see. My reward for the ride - 1) Post Road Pumpkin Ale by Brooklyn Brewery - really good. Not too malty. While the pumpkin was good - it was understated and I like that... 2) My friend's IPA - One of the best beers I have ever had. Simply amazing! Did I mention that we used 4x the normal amount of hops!

Smart move by going by the feel of the hip. See how it feels in the morning. 1)Sounds delightful 2)sounds heavenly. My favorite brew I've ever imbibed in was my buddies Imperial IPA. I know what you speak of by being thrilled with a good home brew. My rewards for taking the kids next door to take care of the neighboors house and plants, a nice refreshing buttwiper out of neighboor Gary's fridge. Times have been rough around here of late. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I got in my swim and run this morning, though I cut the run to a 3.5 miler. My knee hardly barked at all, and I think as long as I go short and slow for a while, and then slowly build the run fitness up, I should be good. The plan called for 8 miles today, and I went 3. Oh well. New monthly goals. I will bike and run full speed ahead, and improve on both. I will recover knee while running drastically less then the plan calls for, until I can get back after it again. Hoping that I can work my way into 5-8 mile runs by the end of the month. This is an epiphany of sorts for me. My typical fall the last 2 years since starting marathon training had looked like taking 3-4 mo.'s off after training to a good level of fitness. during months off, I got slothfull and ate what I saw, and saw what I ate. It was a viscious cycle. Now, though I'm hobbled of sorts, I will still be working the other 2 disciplines, while slowly building back to a running fitness. |

It has been windy and chilly here. Frost warning yesterday, so being a sissy, I have not been on my bike. Gotta get the cycle trainer going! I have been burned to many times with fruits and vegetables in beer but I am all for your friends IPA! I guess I will bring it up...your hip, your race coming up. I honestly don't think you are going to be prepared for the HIM based on your current or projected training. I am not sure if you can roll your entry over to one in the spring or just do the Oly. While you could complete the HIM, I don't think it would very much fun(maybe "fun" isn't the right word to use |

Yeah, there is definitely a letdown after the race season. I too am trying to go the opposite way. I think the offseason is when we should be shooting for our weight goals. That way we can continue to get the proper fuel to train hard for the races. Make sure you slow down if that knee starts bugging you. You have all winter to hit your goals. Have you found yourself a cycle trainer yet? I picked up a cycleops fluid trainer used for $80...sweet deal! |
